As I read all the articles about the Linq project now Bill's getting a face lift, how long do you think before "Old School" Vegas is completely gone (remodeled)?

List your favorite "old school" Vegas places, let's keep it alive....

How do you define "old school"? Some would say its already gone. And a whole generation of new vegas fans are going to end up thinking of the 90s properties as "old school".

Its the casino circle of life. There will always be properties that have lost their shine and start to become bargain joints. There will always be the new and hot thing, and there will always be an old hotel trying to remake itself with a facelift.

How you feel about the change depends only on where you fit in the vegas timeline.

In my mind "Old School" Vegas is anything prior to 1980.

Surprised that Circus Circus is still around!!

I think Slots-O-Fun will soon be done (but it is so small I don't know what they are going to do with the space)

To still get an Old School vibe I like the Peppermill!

I've actually had a number of people tell me that Circus Circus is among the most profitable properties in the MGM portfolio, in large part because it doesn't have any debt. I'd be surprised if goes away any time soon, especially given MGM's financial condition.

    Slots-O-Fun? It's already done.

It died the day they took the craps table out of the front door. Now that was an old-school blast.

Cheap craps. Free beer. Catching a bit of the story of every couple that walked by quarreling, every drunk that stumbled by, every "Vegas virgin" tourist that wantered in agog with the astonishment of it all....

Slots-O Fun? Dead to me, brother.

Sorry to say that in my book, Old Vegas is long gone!

But, on the other hand one of the charms of Vegas is that it is continually changing. I don't particularily like all the fancy high priced clubs or celebrity chef restuarants where the waiters wear a mask and a gun when they present your check.

That too will change when the next wave of new money makers is discovered.

I just spit my drink on the computer.

Thanks for the laugh... and sadness at the same time. Old school? $.99 breakfast or shrimp cocktail. Days when a $1 tip was big (vs a quarter or two). $9.99 buffets. Awesome prime rib dinner at top of Landmark Hotel. Real fountains and big entry to Caesars vs the garbage mess they have now.

Dowton is still got some old school vibe.

They dont tear down the old places, they just spiffy them up a bit, maybe build a new tower, thats about it.

The place wont support giant strip type resorts, they have the golden nugget but thats about it. the rest are smaller and all are old.

It is possible: a lot of people that go to conventions in Las Vegas stay at Circus Circus due to its low rates and closeness to the convention center.

Also, they were the casino that when they expanded they built Mandalay Bay, Luxor, Excalibur and partnered to build Monte Carlo, eventually changing their ownership name to The Mandalay Resort Group before being bought out by MGM.

Jerry's Nugget (betcha about half of you have never been there!) is very Old Vegas as far as casino feel.

Golden Steer is very Old Vegas as far as a steak house.

Battista's (yes, yes, I know ...) has Old Vegas vibes to it too.

Several places downtown have that Old Vegas vibe too.

the problem with old school is as great as it was in its heyday, years later it's always dirty and broken and a shell of what it once was. i'd rather have something new than a relic that was great way back when, but sucks today because father time caught up with it.

With the bean counters taking over that is one big reason why old school is gone. You are a number and that is ALL.

    My definition of "Old School"

Any place you can walk into that doesnt have a door you have to open.

As usual logic and common sense from Shifter. I was never in what most consider old school Vegas since we didnt visit till 93 but even then some of the old school places had started to become run down and a shell of the former glory. When we started going back a decade later I was more pleased than dissapointed in it all and now it's the only place we vacation at. Unlike some I do love the high end clubs, outstanding dining options and such, I mean really the cheap buffets were well, cheap and you got what you paid for. Want to see what happened to old school just visit the Riv now.

I think when the hotels weren't so massive that I could pleasantly casino-hop up and down the strip. The casinos all felt inviting. Now, with the bloated high-end properties and seemingly perpetually-packed sidewalks (or are the sidewalks shrinking?), just getting from one casino to another on the Strip doesn't feel worth the bother. And the trend towards all high-end properties. Fun for many, but not for me.

I actually enjoyed the themed hotels. I miss alot of the camp. I think the highest excitement and 'old Vegas' feel ended for me when the de-themeing began. I remember the first time I came back to see that horrid TI sign. I think the implosion of the Stardust sorta clinched it. The lack of neon and now the trend for glass office buildings. Blech.

Oh, and shows were unique...not ANOTHER Cirque flavor.

The hotels now just feel like grandiose cattle calls with endless queue-ropes everywhere. There's nothing intimate about casinos now.

The gaming is similar...get people's money through the machines and tables as fast as possible. Don't worry about giving players the time to enjoy the gaming...just get the money and get the next person to the machine.
