So I was playing some 1-2 no limit poker today at the casino and I started off not too good but made a nice recovery and won 4 decent pots in a row.Icaused 1 guy tohit the ATM and reload his chipstack.A couple hands after he gets back to the table the big blind was on me and I played my 6/7 off suit because I was the big blind and nobody raised. The flop comes 4/7/7 and I hit a set of 7's.I checked and it goes down the line to the guy who reloaded and he bets $30 which I am the only caller. The turn was a 10 and I checked it and the guy bets another $30 which I call. The river hits and
it is a 7 so I now have quads and an unbeatable hand and I of course play it as cool as ice and check the river. He bets $40 into me and I raise it to $80.He calls and I hold my hand out with the back of the cards facing me and I show the 7.He sees it as does the dealer and 3 other players and the guy even says "damn quads".I chucked my hand down and it landed face down and partially over the line. All of a sudden the dealer yells out
"MUCK" just as the other guy tosses his cards in.The poker room manager is called to the table and the dealer tells him what happened and that I mucked my hand.I state that I showed my hand to the other player and the dealer and 3 other players saw my winning hand.Well the table got pretty loud in general as MY pot was being pushed towards the guy who it turned out had pocket queens and I was leading him all the way.He quietly
asked the guy sitting next to him if he should ask the table for a players based decision but did not put forth the idea when the chips got slid in front of him.The guy took the pot and the ***chebag with a capital D did not even have the stones to look me in the eyeafter that. The pussy hid behind his sunglasses which he put on after the hand and never took off except when I went for a smoke outside.

All I can say is that guy has some seriously bad karma due to hit him like a freight train for taking that pot on a technicality
when he knew I had him beat, and that dealer will NEVER get another tip from me again.

The dealer seen your winning hand, and you said the chips were being pushed toward you. That should have been it, period. HAND OVER. You win. Sounds like the dealer screwed the pooch on that one. You said you laid them face down just a tad over the line. The only way I would see the dealers point of view would be if you threw them face down into the muck pile, but you stated that wasn't the case. Sounds like a bad dealer. The other guy knew he was beat- he could have gave you the pot as well, I would have. He was dumb betting into the 2 7's on the flop, he should have known he was beat and laid down after that flop. The only way I see different on that is if the flop was Q 7 7 and he flopped a boat.

Actually the chips were being pushed to the other guy and not me.My cards
landed face down halfway over the line.I took it as a given that since both the dealer AND the other player saw my 7 and acknowledged my
quads that the hand was mine.

If the shoe was on the other foot I myself would have had the decency
to push the chips back to the winner of the hand and not keep them due
to a BS house rule enforced by a dirtbag dealer.

It's that difficult to flip your cards over and show the table? I'm pretty sure that guy is posting on another forum about the DB who hit quads on him and didn't have the balls to flip his cards over and they ended up in muck. Why would you only show your hand to half the table? Lesson learned I hope.

To be honest, it sounds like you mucked your hand and the dealer and floorman made the right decision.

There are really three "problems" here:

    1) You holding your hand up to show what you have isn't tabling your hand. Plus it sounds like you only showed one card.

    2) You put your cards face down and they went over the line. Even forgetting about the line, why are you putting your cards face down?
Is it your contention that every time a player plays his/her cards face down on the table the dealer should flip them over and check them to see if they are a winning hand?

    3) Once your hand is mucked most poker rooms won't fish it out of the muck. Just opens so many angle shooting possibilities that the easiest way for them to deal with it to warn players to protect their hand and that way if your cards end up in the muck when they shouldn't its your own fault.

I don't know if you were trying to be like some kind of smug hotshot in this or what, but the lesson to be learned here is that if you had just played your hand properly you would have won that pot.

All I can is that I showed my hand to the guy who I was heads-up with and who was betting into me.....he saw it and so did the dealer and they both saw that I had quad 7's.....I did not throw my hand into the muck pile I just dropped it down after both parties said I had the better hand....hell I had the better hand off the flop and I was leading the guy all the way down the garden path and he was betting into me with pocket queens and having only
2 pair.I played the hand perfect and the net closed in when he hit a full house
of 7's full of queens and I had quad 7's

Lesson learned I guess....spread the cards over and reap the reward....in hindsite I wish I had nervously overbet the raise with a take back bet.....meaning that I raised and tried to take chips back from it and have the guy push all-in on me...I definatly would have been more mindfull of laying down the hand then.

This is interesting. I only play home games so I have several questions. What is the proper way to display a winning hand when someone calls? Must it be placed on the table face up or can the person just hold it in his hand?

What is a "Player based decision"? I assume it is a vote by all the players in the game, but is it allowable in a casino? If it is a vote by the players, there were only three players who saw the hand. Are they voting to have the cards flipped back up?

You whine about this guy who stole your pot, and complain about "Karma", then you want to resort to some cheap angle shoot to win a guys chips when you have QUADS?

Sounds like Karma owed you first.

I agree with the majority here. No reason he should have to give you chips when you obviously didn't follow the rules. This is the main reason I flip my cards in front of me and don't act cowboy by throwing them up or making a show out of it. Not saying you did, but just pointing out my own caution. Money is money. There is no honest player in poker because if there was you would have told him from the get go you had the best hand rather then deceive him into thinking he did.

    expensive lesson learned I think.

you put your cards over the line which, in that poker room, is mucking it.
therefore under the rules of the house the pot was pushed to the person with the only live cards left.

The guy who won the pot did so fairly and the house made the right call.

protect your cards and keep until the pot is pushed to you.

you clearly know enough not to wet your pants when you hit quads so you know this too.

    your mistake.

honestly this is one of the reasons I find poker to be a HUGE turnoff especially the new fangled poker with the sunglasses at night, the hoodies, head phones, and all the other BS

I am not calling out the OP specifically, but gambling with 4 or 5 other people that are dead set on being the coolest cat in the room, "cleaning everyone else out", and that I have no clue how they will act if they get their clock cleaned....no thanks

that is one thing I like about pretty much every other form of gambling out there you can all pretty much be happy together or even people that are not winning are not having their money taken by you and as for the dealers it is really not their money either so they should not be acting like a complete fool either especially when they are relying on tips

and then you get back to the guy with the walkman on, the shades, hoodie, and the "death stare" and I would rather sit around a table with a club and take turns clubbing each other in the head than play cards with them.....and I would probably stand a better chance in the clubbing contest as well

just turn the cards over already :poke:

Another prime example of why I wont play cards in LV. Since ESPN started televising poker, every hump w a buy in and two hours to spare thinks hes a pro. All the showmanship/gamesmanship has ruined the public games. No one just simply plays cards anymore.

Actually I am looking forward to playing poker on my upcoming trip to LV.
I am not one of those types that sports sunglasses and opts for over the top
showmanship and I can say I have been slow rolled many times both I was
the person to call and when I was the person who was called.

As for being called out about wanting to clean the guy out by using
a strategic bet by offering false confidence as a front all I can say
is that when I sit down at a poker table my goal is to win as much money
as is possible. If I lose I lose and I have no hard feeleings as I was the one who chose to play and take the risk.

It was an expensive lesson to learn and it is something I wont forget anytime soon.

I dont play to much poker but a question to the OP

why didnt you turn your cards over? i dont get why you put them face down on the table.

I know you said the other player saw them and also the dealer but i still dont get it

having said that the other player should have done the decent thing and let you have the pot

It's not like the other guy was running an angle. Flip your cards and keep your finger on them until you get paid. Kind of poker 101.

Your title says it all. Be careful when laying down a winning hand. I think you know it was your fault, and still angry about it. Look at the bright side: You're lucky you weren't playing no limit.

Valuable lesson to learn when at the poker table. I believe this thread has run its course and we all learned from Rounder's mistake to ALWAYS lay down your cards so everyone can see them when you win.
