Downtown Hotels

Looking for input on the three best hotels to stay at downtown and why you would recommend them. THanks.

 

1. Golden Nugget -- Great amenities, great pool
2. Four Queens -- clean rooms, all rooms close to Fremont Street
3. Plaza -- newly rennovated rooms, greaet price

 

1, Golden Nugget - Very much like a Strip property without the resort fee.
2, Main Street Station - Good rooms, good food, very good beer.
3, El Cortez - Cabana Suites, love The Flame, fun location

I think The D may (may) change things in the near future.

 

This is tough.

#1 is the Nugget by default - unless you are a video poker player.


#3 is the ElCo - its a great place to stay, play, but its off at one end. So its always gonna be number 3.


#2 position depends on what you like, and its a toss-up between Plaza, Main St. Station, California, Fremont, Four Queens, The D-itz.

If you prefer an updated room, its the Plaza.
If you prefer great video poker and machines, Main St. / California, with Four Queens and the D-itz running close behind.

Vegas Club last, no contest.

Gold Spike could figure in there for some people, but its awfully damn small.

 

Best Choices Downtown

If you've never stayed downtown, choose the Golden Nugget for your first stay. Anything else is way different from the strip.

While the GN is the most strip-like, you won't confuse it for a strip property. It is more compact and, in places, congested feeling. Also, if you shop, the price for a Carson Tower room at the GN isn't much different than most other places people have mentioned. We stayed at the GN the first couple of times we stayed downtown before branching out to some of the others. If the Plaza is less factoring in the $11 (w/tax) per day resort fee, it's also worth considering, but from what I've seen recently it's close to or above the GN.

 

We have stayed at the Plaza a few times. Very nice, for downtown. Never stayed anywhere else downtown.

 

1. Golden Nugget- Great Rooms, Great Location, Cool Pool

2A. Plaza- Nicely remodeled rooms, Second best Pool Downtown, Good Food Options

2B. Golden Gate- Nicely remodeled rooms (but small), Best Casino Downtown, Good Food.

3. Main Street Station- Nice Rooms, fun Casino, Good buffet, Great brewpub.

My favorites are El Cortez Cabana Suites, Main Street Station and the Fremont. Yes, the GN is the nicest but it's not for me. I have not stayed at the remodeled Plaza or the new rooms in the Golden Gate or the D so can't comment on those. I did stay in a remodeled room at the GG a couple of years ago but it is very small and very noisy.

 

We were very pleased with our remodeled room at The D. Good size, clean, comfortable bed.

 

I have only stayed at one downtown hotel- the El Cortez Cabana Suites. I loved it. Great bed, very secure building (theres a security guard outside and someone sits at a desk inside), parking is very easy, and the location on a somewhat dead street makes it very quiet inside. I paid $64 for two nights, with taxes and my brother laughed- until he saw the room. He stayed there for 6 nights the next time he was in town and he loved it as well.

 

Ending 10 days in Vegas Wed:

Plaza remodel is nice. Comped 3 nights. Elevators are very swift and little or no waiting. Eat at HHADD, c;ose tp Cal and MMS. Slow wifi. Have stayed many times before the remodel. Will return.

Golden Gate room on LVA coupon. New TV, comfy queen bed. Wife was disgusted with the cleanliness of the room and dirty grout in the shower. Would not stay again. $5/day wifi medium speed.

El Cortez Jr; Suites LVA coupon (current rates are same or lower), very nice room with fridge. Enjoyed the Flame. Distant from Fremont is a turnoff for a 70+ year old. Will not return.

Overall the Plaza is relatively uncrowded and makes a nice cheap homebase for downtown action.

 

I gave bad info earlier, I paid $57 for two night at the Cabana Suites, one of them was a friday night. Not bad at all

 

Four Queens - good selection of games, Hugo cellar and Chicago Brewery. Rooms are generally your Motel 6 type...not much of a selling point, but it's clean and fine for the trip if you don't spend much time in the room.

MSS - Best beer in vegas and good video poker.

Golden Gate - Sexy dealers!

 

If it's your first time Downtown, then I would suggest GN Rush Tower. Nice rooms. No lingering smoke smell and most of all you walk right onto Fremont Street.

Now that I've been a few times Main Street Station or El Co get my votes for cheaper gaming. MSS has a nice brew pub and the buffet was decent.

Don't know about the Plaza but that may be an option as well.
