Let me start off with a few facts about myself and my wife. We are 50 year olds in 80 year old bodies and taste. What this means, no more LVStrip casinos and hotels. We now like it cool and calm. No crowds, hustle and bustle, nor wild side anymore.

What we do like: The El Cortez...calm, peaceful, slower pace.

*** We may end up back at the ECo, but I have a few questions to ask*

For my 50th, what downtown/Fremont hotels do you recommend?
    What we want:
    Slower pace.

Able to go down from our room to the restaurants or casino with little to smallish in size crowds.

    Good food.

    Single deck bj.

    Quiet rooms in the hotel.

    Clean rooms.

*NO noise from Fremont Experience...or traffic.

Basically... The El Co, on Fremont Street. Is this possible?

NO,NO,NO...TO THE GOLDEN NUGGET...TOO MUCH CHAOS!!! No to the strip.

Is this possible? I have the opportunity to stay two weeks...maybe split the weeks...ElCo and something else on Fremont. Maybe a week in Vegas and a week in So.Calif. or S.W. Colorado.

Please give me websites or youtube vid., to see the rooms...especially the renovated ones. Also...what area of the hotel....above a certain floor or level...and what area..N.S.E.W. part of the hotel. Also, what to avoid if you don't know any recommendations.

Thanks for your help and information!!

    Cohiba

We would be going next April or October 2013..for this trip.

Maybe you would be better in an off-strip locals place.

I can't recommend any first hand, but it seems like many properties can be found with nice rooms, lots of restaurants, and easy access to the casino. No touristy hype.

Sounds like El Cortez fits you very well just as it is. Why change?

Still, you might want to check out the south tower of the Four Queens.

The rooms are far away from Fremont street, larger than the nort tower rooms and very quiet. They're still close at hand to the casino and noise from Carson St. is not a factor.

Many people consider Hugo's Cellar to be the best restaurant downtown for a nice dinner, filling the 50th birthday bill, quite nicely.

Have you considered M? It's definitely not the strip. It's way out of the way, but it has a lot of what you're talking about. It's a nice resort away from everything else. The only problem is that it's not really in vegas, but from what you're saying, that might be good for you.

After reading the OP M Resort was the first thing that popped into my head. If you rent a car when you go to Vegas like I do (long haul this!) M resort is a great option.

Even cabbing it -- the cab ride to M really isn't that expensive. $30-$35 from the airport, which isn't much higher than getting to the north strip. They have that great buffet, too.

Cohiba, Main Street Station would give you a quiet location but close enough to Freemont Street and easy access to California's calm atmosphere. Room quality is a matter of opinion but I like MSS's rooms.

I would also suggest Main Street Station. We are also 50's and prefer the pace of downtown instead of the strip. MSS is about a block off of Fremont and an easy walk.

I agree with xmarksx ~ we love MSS and always stay there for at least 3 nts when we're in Vegas. Buffet and Triple 7 are good spots to eat ~ and we just like the feel of the place.

Thirded. I'm a big fan of MSS. The food options are limited (buffet and 777 brew pub), but they are both very good. The 777 brew pub serves a bigger variety of food than one would expect for a brew pub - and better quality, too. Everything is very clean throughout the casino and it's mostly couples in there.

I think they have one or two single deck BJ tables, but I see much more face down double deck. No double after split, if you care.

The rooms were simple, well-appointed and clean. The bed was lower to the ground than I expected.

The rooms on the east side of the building (towards Main St./Fremont St.) will be quieter than those on the West side that face the train track and highway. I was on the 'wrong' side, but I didn't have any real concerns about noise at night.

Granted I'm 20 years your junior. But I'm told I'm old beyond my years

Four Queens has been my new home since I fell off the El Co's comped list.(where is the love?). It is generally quiet in the table area, no dancing girls there. Rooms are fine by downtown standards, not as spacious as the tower rooms. The food at their cafe is better than El Co, and they always have a breakfast special with players card. Their brewpub is small and quiet except during sports, and I always have a pizza there. What I don't like is there comp system. It is simple; all points convert to cash. Even if you spend points on logo merchandise, you could have gotten cash for them. And no spending points in the restaurants, instead you go to the club for a voucher then to the cage for cash. Not downtown, I would say Gold Coast has what you want.

    I Agree

I agree, MSS might suit you very well. Still walkable to ElCo and you, like me, probably need the exercise. And you can dip into the craziness of FSE for a short amount of time for a few short kicks and get quickly back to MSS by walking through Binions, The Californian up to the second floor and take the ramp over the street back to MSS. Californian is also very mellow with an Aloha attitude by patrons and staff.

Excellent, but small Hawaiian restaurant on the 2nd level of the Californian. Always very good, from a snack to a feast.

Off strip I enjoy the Eastside Cannery which has surprisingly nice, spacious rooms and it's a short walk to Sam's town, which is more enjoyable than one might think.

50 ! me too. Orleans has a 50+ day tuesday where you earn 7x points , earn points then get $4 movie, bogo buffet ( avoid 11 am, long lines), drawings etc. See thier website. Orleans has been generous with free rooms and other comps. Large quiet rooms. Great fitness center.
We go to Carlsbad, oceanside, encinitas, CA for a weekend during our trip. Traffic getting there can be bad, avoid rush hour. Once there not bad just avoid the hwy 5. Avoid any hotel rooms that face hwy 5. Beautiful beaches that go for miles.

Not sure how exactly to avoid the CHAOS of Fremont St. whilst staying on Fremont St.

Spend a bit more money, and stay someplace nice off-strip/downtown, eg) M Resort, GVR, Red Rock. Maybe take 2 nights and stay at someplace close to the strip yet still quite+very nice like Vdara and MGM Signature.

    Opinions on hotels downtown

We just came back from Las Vegas Sept 12 and stayed 4 days at the Fremont Hotel. Great stay room was clean and nice. Everyone from checking in to the people at the buffet to the cleaning personnel were wonderful. Would stay there again in a heart beat.
The real nightmare started when we moved across the street to the 4 Queens for the next 5 days. Room was nice heard no noise. But everyone was rude except at check in. Nobody has a personality there. Even at Magnolias the hostess from the Phillipines was rude and nasty. There were no bj tables open in the morning. After our first day there if we wouldn't have lost money we would have moved back to the Fremont Hotel. Don't stay at the 4 Queens you will not be happy. Usually I don't complain. But everyone at that hotel was the pits. They need to teach everyone again what customer service is. I must say our housekeeper for our room was very nice.
    Thanks Just my 2 cents

You sure? I never seen their shoe-game (back-row of the pit, near Magnolia's entrance) closed.
Not that I would actually play their shoe-game, but it does seem to always be going.

I used to stay at the 4-Queens pretty regularly, but like you, I'm now a fan of Fremont...I would like to try MSS... I really like the "feel" of the place. I always have fun there, even when I'm not winning.

I agree on MSS. Great location and great service. Stayed there early August and plan to stay there again soon. I'm 56 going on 35 but I like a quiet stress free place
