Who's in their room that much anyway?!!!

I recently talked with someone who paid way too much for a suite at MGM during their most recent stay. After hearing about all the awesome amenities in the suite, I asked "How much time do you spend in the room?" They thought for a second and replied with a smile that they like to be comfortable when they sleep. WTF! IMHO the quality of sleep I get in Vegas has everything to do with the bed, not the room. I think I would have to be hosting a large party to splurge on this type of room. Typically, we're in our room to sleep 4-5hrs/day, get ready to go back out, and to do what can't legally be done in public. So who's out there filling the Spa in the spa suite every day or watching the TV in the bathroom? lol

 

I prefer a nice room with a nice view and nice amenities... always have. I prefer to nurse a hangover with some nice room-service and lounge a bit in the spa-tub lookin' out at the view. The room is my "home-base" during my visits and also my office for the time... I like it clean and well appointed. I'm over the days where the room was just a changing booth. I've done Circus-Circus and the Plaza when the room doors were hollow-core like an old apartment closet and even Arizona Charlies on Decatur tryin' to save a few buck on the room to spend downstairs. I get it... but I don't carry my laptop in a backpack any more and proud to stay in decent, well appointed rooms when I travel.

 

If a room has a big tub I will go out of my way to use it. For other stuff, I like to have it in case. But since I don't really want to pay for extra nice stuff I only end up with nice amenities if they happen to be comped.

 

I like total quiet for the first hour to hour and a half in the morning. I let room service bring my coffee and a small munchie. This is when I sit and enjoy my view from the room for the first time. Then off to the fitness center for a half hour on the tread mill. (Run a 5k) Then back for the shower and my regular clothes. So most of the a.m. is in the room, and venturing out into the casino or the pool, starts at about 11a.m. I will be back to freshen up before dinner time and then gone for the balance of the evening/early morning. So a nice room (Preferably at least a mini-suite) with a relaxing view is important to me. Especially with a cocktail, looking at the lights of the Las Vegas night. Great memories and a great time!

 

We've totally outgrown the "the room is just to sleep" phase. I want comfort, quiet, a decent view and some amenities. I want someplace where I can kick back with a cocktail or three and watch the people go by below. I want a powerful shower that can cut through the cobwebs the next morning. I want a place I feel comfortable in when I need to break up a bad streak gambling. I want a big, comfy bed on which to make bouncy-bouncy with the wife. Dammit, I want a comfortable throne on which to do my morning meditation.

So, yeah, the room is important.

 

Even when I got the nicest, largest rooms with the sweetest views, I was still always eager to get the heck out of there and go DO something. But maybe that will change. For the time being, it's a bigger thrill to get fine accommodations at next-to-nothing and have more money for food, entertainment and gambling.

We've been to Vegas enough we've seen all the sites, we're usually in town 5 nights [at least] per trip, and we're not there to party or go clubbing [at the most, besides drinking at the tables, we might spend some time drinking in a bar or lounge], we're not casino hoppers, and we're not pool people - we're there to relax, gamble, eat, shop, and maybe see a show - so when we're not at the tables, the spa, lunch or dinner, or shopping, or a show, we're back in the suite.

We usually get room service for breakfast most days, lunch somedays and even dinner once in a blue moon, so a full dining area in our suite is usually important to us & gets a lot of use - as does the spa/soaking tub, as I like to get in at least one nice soak in the tub [preferably joined by the wife] each day as well.

So for us, having a nice suite is important - true, at my play level, in Vegas they're comped - but even when we vacation somewhere other than Vegas we still always book a suite at a "5 star" hotel/resort - since pretty much anywhere we go on vacation is the same M.O. as when we go to Vegas - just minus the gambling.

 

sure if you're only in the room 4-5 hours to sleep, by all means get the cheapest room. but that's not everybody's cup of tea. we hang out in the room all the time. eat breakfast, lounge around during the day, hang out at night before bed, all kinds of stuff. having a big suite in a luxury hotel is a big part of what we love about Vegas and what keeps us coming back.

when i'm in the Skylofts or Mansion i take a bath almost every day, a steamshower at least once a day, always turn on the TV in the bathroom and watch SportsCenter or whatever ... and i'm a dude. it's just that great.

 

Looks like you are in town for the first NFL weekend too, staying through Sunday or was it not planned for that?

 

I think sometimes its just nice to have a nice room, and not everybody who goes to Las Vegas is out and about, either sightseeing or gambling, all day.

I know our first few trips to Las Vegas were like that: we'd be out of the room by 9AM and not back until 2-3AM. Problem was by the time we got home from our vacation we were so worn out from all the activity and tired from the lack of sleep that we needed a vacation just to recuperate.

 

the only thing stranger than having a TV in the bathroom to me is a phone....I don't think I would touch a bathroom phone handset without a rubber glove or perhaps two on and I damn sure would not put it up near my face who in the hell knows where that thing has been much less the hands handling it

as for the TV to each their own, but I am probably out of the bathroom before I can get the thing turned on and find something I want to watch....I would rather just take care of business and go lay down on the bed or sit in a chair to watch TV VS hang out in the bathroom

and as for women watching TV in the bathroom do we really need something to slow them down that much more

 

Sportscenter baby, give me a toilet and a remote, I am good for a few hours.

 

We are past the suite stage unless a hotel throws us a comp, but we like a decent room. Does not have to be Bellagio or Wynn, we are also happy at Bally's. That's as far down the food chain as we want to go.

I have trouble believing the folks who say "I am only in the room 4-5 hours a day to sleep". Add it up -

Unpacking, packing
Sleep
'Personal time'
Shower/bath
Shave
Toilet
Dressing for day/evening/pool
Coffee/drinks, snacks
TV
Chatting, relaxing, taking it easy, enjoying the views

Even if you do not do all of that, it's a lot to fit in 4-5 hours!

Mrs T spends time in the room while I am gambling so a reasonable room is a must.

 

We like to be able to chill out in a hotel room and not have our cats bother us. Sometimes being out and about for 12 hours at a time is enough and we're tired and go back to our room to watch our favorite reality TV show (go ahead and laugh if you want). We also love the game Lost Cities and brought the cards along to play. This time we also got an unexpected suite and I enjoyed relaxing bubble baths in the evening. In the morning I would make coffee, sit at the dinette and look through the tourist magazines.

 

Seems like we are like most of you here, we do like a nice and comfortable room, not just the cheapest place to park your suitcase and sleep for a few hours. Rarely would we splurge for something upper tier, but it is part of the vacation experience to have a nice room, and we do spend more time there than just sleep.

 

Reality check...not everyone does vegas the same way! We have outgrown the walk till you drop phase of Vegas. We are in our room for about 11-12 hours ....8-9 pm to 8 am. Watch tv, bathe, soak those aching legs and feet. 12 hours out and about plus gambling is enough to leave us tired and broke. "Suite" does not have to be luxury or expensive. Our requirements now (first trip was 1995) are desk, internet, fridge for the DH and a sofa for me. May sound like minimum requirements to some...but we have to spring for a suite usually to get this. My days of laying on the bed to watch tv are over, I want to sit. I also wake up between 4-5 am and like to watch the sunrise over the city (I always try to get a high floor east view). Believe it or not some people outgrow the party stage...we also stay for 6/7 nights and want to be comfortable.

Not talking high end, LeMans upgrade at Paris, the old Celebrity Suite at MGM, Classic Executive at Harrahs, Masquerade at Rio one year (most we ever spent for an upgrade but 1600 sq ft was great, even if it was a shabby suite), 2 room suite at SP and GC. Next spring we have decided to dump CET and book a Monaco or Diamond at the Monte Carlo. On sale Monacos before resort fee can be as low as $85 night if you watch the sales. Past few years we booked the suite ahead but use to just take the comp room and upgrade at checkin. As you can see the suites we do are not the fancy stuff others up here talk about. We have never paid out of pocket more than $600 for a 6/7 night stay in a suite. Which is less or the same than others pay for standard rooms. We also only take 1 vacation a year and Vegas is it. If you go all the time and stay 3 nights and party, I can understand the room doesn't matter attitude.

But saying room doesn't matter is rather naive. I am sure that the things in Vegas that matter to you...spas, fancy pool, shopping, drinking....don't matter to me. To each his own and we can all coexist and enjoy our Vegas time! Quite honestly, if every hotel room in Vegas was like Venetian or Rio I wouldn't pay to upgrade either.

Las Vegas has enough variety to accommodate a range of tastes, interests, and pricepoints. Each person can choose how they "do Vegas".

 

I'm in Vegas I wanna enjoy Vegas not hang out in a room.. Least amount of time in there as possible.

 

I wonder how many of the people who say the room doesn't matter always try the $20 trick :Þ

 

The only thing I really liked about the Flamingo Go rooms.
A glass doored shower with Sportscenter on the TV. A good start to the day!
