I read on another post here, that someone asked the hotel clerk for an upgrade when he had a standard comped room and recieved it. Yet the hotel said they only gave out their suits as comped stay for better players. I'm guessing this must be for a free room on a mailer or off their players card. You can't do that with a host's comped room can you? He has figured out your ADT and is giving you the room type based on it. Otherwise people would try the twenty dollar trick, at check in, all the time. This would probably get the host upset since you went around him after the booking.
We don't play enough for a host, but have received quite a few comped rooms/promo pricing and have had luck using the $20 trick. Not all the time but enough to keep trying!
When I check in I have asked for a different tower than the one I was booked for. I have not had a problem getting it. I don't know if the front desk knows anything about my play. I just think if it is available they will do it.
ive been upgrade on comped and non comped rooms just by being a platnium at cet.ive never used the 20 dollar trick, upgraded from deluxe or fab to go room view and upgraded at harrahs also
The term "upgrade" means many different things to different people. Many of these hotels have a half dozen levels of rooms that some of us would call "standard". Some have rooms they call suites, but they are just a bit larger. Nothing special.
If a host comped you a suite to begin with, can a clerk at check in issue you a higher grade or larger suite if available?
I have asked many times and not had any luck with that. Once at Aria, I said I would actually PAY for a upgraded suite. After a bunch of pecking at the computer, making multiple calls, going to back room... the answer was like $250 a day. I passed.
I've booked a comped room at CP in their cheap towers (forum or roman) and asked at check-in for any available upgrades. They put me in the Jr. Suite in the Palace Tower. Also at Harrahs i booked a comped trip in the lowest standard room and asked for a suite when we checked in. The lady actually apologized that they were out of full suites and put me in a petite suite instead! Just asking nicely seems to work for me. Disclaimer though, this was at Diamond check-in, so they may be a little more loose with the upgrades.
I had my host book me a room last minute for 2 nights during the Super Bowl (sun and Monday nights) when I got around to checking in at 2am I got the check in clerk to upgrade the room to a 1500 X 2 suite. My host congratulated me on getting them to upgrade me a few days later. He said they had told him all the bigger suites were occupied.
Usually, if you booked through a host the host has already gotten you the best accomodations they can get you based upon a combination of factors - your level of play, availability, etc. Competition for higher-end suites is pretty fierce, and suite assignments are usually only decided a few days [a week at most] in advance during a host department meeting where they look at demand and decide who gets put where. So, I would think - at least at the higher-end places - that once you're talking about the suite level [and as others have pointed out, actual suites vs. oversized room "suites"] for the most part those assignments are pretty set and only likely to be upgraded further by host intervention because of unexpected availability. If your host has already put you up in a sky suite at Aria or a parlor suite at Wynn, for example, I highly doubt you're going to be able to get a bump up to a penthouse sky suite or a salon suite from a desk clerk. That's not to say it's not possible to get upgraded, but that if you do get upgraded it is probably going to be because your host saw an opening and had you bumped up at the last minute.
I had a Bellagio Suite reserved once and was upgraded to a Penthouse at check-in because a Bellagio Suite was not available. My host had to check with the front desk before assessing my play against the comp value of the Bellagio Suite. The implication was that if I had talked my way into a Penthouse Suite the host would look at the comp value of the Penthouse when assessing F&B comps at the end of the trip. I have had the Executive Suites comped at Wynn on a couple of trips. The front desk said they could not upgrade to a Parlor or Salon Suite without permission from the host. On one occasion they did call through to the host who refused permission! The front desk and host agreed that I could pay the $100/$200 a night upgrade charge if I wanted and the host would assess the extra costs at check-out. Very fair but I declined.
