Okay this happened over a month ago but my brother-in-law and I still can’t come to an agreement over who won this bet.

    The Players:
My brother-in-law. He’s English, so he knows and loves soccer/football. But, he’s not much of a gambler.
Me. I’m American, so I knew nothing of the sport until I got an English BIL. But, I am a degenerate gambler and know my way around a sports book…though, I’ve never bet soccer before.

    The Bet:
Spain vs. Portugal in the Euro Championship this summer. He had Spain. I had Portugal, but I made him give me one goal.

    The Results:
Scoreless draw after regulation and overtime. Spain won on penalty kicks, 3-1.

    The Argument:
I say the game ended in a draw – therefore, I win as Spain did not cover. Spain merely advanced on PKs. After all, the newspapers, the internet, ESPN…all listed the score as 0-0 with “Spain advances on PKs” listed parenthetically.
He says that the PKs count and that the final score was 3-1. Therefore, Spain did cover and he wins.

    So…who owes whom dinner?

IF they advanced they won man. Thats their version of "sudden death" so just like in our game even though it ends kind of cheesy sometimes a win is a win.

No argument there. But, by HOW MUCH did they win? There was a spread involved.

Would you consider the margin of victory two goals?

You lost! The score was 3-1 and with your 1 goal handicap, 3-2.

A sportsbook in Las Vegas and the UK grades a football/soccer wager after regulation time.
    Not after extra time.

They never grade based on the score of a penalty kick shootout.

    Portugal +1 wins.

the rule from one of the worlds largest offshore:

Unless otherwise specified, wagers on the outcome of a match will be decided based on two halves of 45 minutes each and any time the referee adds to compensate for injuries and other stoppages. It does not include periods of extra time nor penalty shootouts

Yeah, sounds like some of those details should have been worked out ahead of time. I think you guys should call it a push and bet on something else thats a little more clear to settle it.

Your bro in law is taking you for a ride. If he is big time soccer fan like you say he is then he should know that soccer is based on both halves plus extra time (injury time). PK's don't count towards any bet in soccer! You win!

Wow, I guess there is a reason I've never bet on soccer. I don't understand how the final score, can't be the final score.
    I'll stick to NFL.

I had a feeling he was trying to pull one over on me…

Now to think about payback! :wink2:

yeah, agreed - Football bets here are always based on 90 minutes

If he doesn't normally bet on football though I can understand his point of view

The only way to settle it is to bet on Sundays Charity Shield match and up the stakes ;)

LOL. He's an Arsenal fan. I can't imagine he'd take Man City. And I KNOW it would be a cold day in Hell before he'd take Chelsea!

Oh, and BTW...when I mentioned to him that I started this thread and that several Brits and other soccer fans responded, he immediately - and very sheepishly - responded "steak, sushi or Italian?"

I let him off easy - Jimmy John's & Coldstone.

Betting shops only count the two halves to lower their exposure! The final score of 3-1 is what will be recognised by the football association and is the one I would consider the winner in a sportsmans bet.

I was in Vegas for the European Championships. Check out my photo of the odds board. Their is three possible outcomes portugal win, spain win, or a draw. If you counted penaltys then a draw would be impossible. In Vegas the people who bet on draw won the bet.

This isn't debatable. You win. I'm both a soccer fan and a degenerate gambler. To give an idea of my credentials, I watched Swansea play Everton this morning...I'm probably one of about 50 Americans who did that. Even the English wouldn't watch that game.

On a related note, there's a reason why there aren't usually +1 goal bets in soccer...

Sorry to say this but that's not true. Maybe at the Vegas sportsbook they don't have those bets but at my (online) sportsbook they always have handicap bets. +1 home or away even +2 or +3 (Barcelona often) I like those bets because they crank up the quotes
