Why do people that have no clue sit down and play blackjack? I watched a guy last week sit at a single deck game at Casino royale change $200 dollars. BJ pays 6:5. Us low rollers sorta have to put up with that. This guy is sitting at a five dollar table and his first bet is two twenty I've dollar chips. He hits on a 13 with the dealer up card being a 6. He busts and so does dealer. His next bet was the remainder 150. He hits on a 13 or 15 with the dealer showing a five. He draws a face card and bust again. No one else at the table hits and the dealer draws a low card to 20. Not only did he bust but he took the dealers bust card. I hate playing at these tables with people that have no clue but us low rollers have little choice. I know in the long run dumb bets by others have no bearing on your winnings but for low rollers it does have a significant bearing on how long the bankroll lasts.

Look on the bright side, at least the guy lost, it's really irritating when they win but burn the rest of the table.

There are plenty of $5 tables downtown.

Haha! It sucks when someone like that sits down, wins, but screws the table in the process. Ultimately though, it is their money and I have been the beneficiary of such poor play many times as well.

I agree with you, it is very frustrating, but what can you do. Only thing that helps me (sometimes) when I see things like that is to remind myself of the many times I have won a hand or two because someone deviated from basic strategy and it made the dealer bust.

I get frustrated too when people do that, but then I remind myself that

a/ I don't want people telling me how to spend my money, gambling bank roll or otherwise

b/ You can get up and leave the table at any moment in time.

For an example of A, playing at a $5 table last week with a bet of $10, I doubled my 11 with the dealer having a face card. I pulled a 10 and won, and then the lady sit next to me said 'wow, nice pull, I never double down on a dealer face'. I just simply responded that 'well, I only come to Vegas once a year'. Maybe that was that guys deal and he had a plane to catch or something...

I was totally clueless when I first played blackjack! I suspect all beginners are, well, somewhat clueless. I'm still not an expert, and I'm sure many players are not either.

Yup this gets me all the time. Everyone says and I guess its true that bad play from other players will help you as often as it hinders you. It just doesnt seem that way to me but its supposed to be true.

That said I agree with the previous poster - you just have to let them spend their money however they want to spend their money. If they start to lose the table hands then I just leave - same as if someone sat down and did something else to cool the table.

Only pro gamblers should be allowed to sit at the tables? If this were the standard, I'm guessing there wouldn't be much to Vegas.

Here is a train wreck story for you - an excerpt from my trip report. :

We were just about to leave Imperial Palace about 6 to head up to dinner. My friend had joined us and we were waiting for him to finish up at blackjack. J and I were watching a rather inexperienced (to say the least!) player at his table. She was dealt a pair of Aces. Even I know to split them. She agonized over it and decided not to. She called for a card – a queen. Hit again. A Third Ace. Hit again …the fourth Ace. Hit again. A King. It was painful to watch….she busted with four aces and two face cards.

Yes, it is irritating watching an idiot play.

BUT - his stupid play did not cost you money.

Basic strategy will help YOU make the best plays for YOU. It does not impact the dealer's play one little bit. When a stupid player takes a card, or does not take a card, it does not impact you directly. It could be helping the dealer as well as hurting the dealer. Basic strategy does not impact the next one, two or three cards that are about to come out of the deck.

    Geez.

(caveat - single deck play and card counting may change the results above)

if you want to see bad play come to europe with me.everyone splits tens.
they also dont like to hit on 14 ,15 ,or 16 when a dealer has a 7 or better showing.

and the other nite there was a guy who hit on 17,18,19 as long as the dealer had a 10 showing.even the dealer where laughin at him.

We were all newbies at one time, and some of us learned things the hard way.
My 1st time in vegas was pre-internet, and before the advent of any computer training systems. I was armed with a 500 page stat "guide" that was like reading a text book to a class I didn't like.
That being said, there is no reason for anybody these days to not spend a bit of time learning basic straegy. The info is everywhere!

When I'm feeling perverse I actually like sitting at a table with people like that. It can be fun watching the people who don't know as much as they think they do go nuts. I'll just sit, play my hand and smile.

I've enjoyed playing at tables like this now and then myself. It's pretty astounding to see people hit the craziest hands and win. Or better yet watch them puzzle it out when they hit hard 18 and lose. These tables usually play really slowly too, which is good for my bankroll since the number of bets is smaller.

I've gotta say, I'm kinda surprised by this attitude of caring about how other people play. If one isn't permitted by social pressure to make choices in gambling, be they good or bad, then you may as well just put your money and one of those laminated perfect strategy cards on the table. Then get the dealers attention, point at the card and say X hands or bust.

Any 7 in craps has a worse house edge than assuming the hidden card is a face in BJ. But only one gets a scowl from other players.

*shrugs* too serious, not enough fun.

You can usually sit out a few hands or play every other one, without any questions from the dealer or pit supervisor. They know and understand what's going on. And like your experience, these players aren't around long. If it does continue for awhile and it bothers you, then it's time to move to a new table. If you do move, do it without causing a scene, it shows class on your part and it is appreciated by the pit.

I vote this the best response. It's the way things are. Sometimes you're the windshield, sometimes you're the bug.

I find that this whole "you caused the table to lose by your decision" attitude has probably gotten worse over the years. I seem to point out time and time again that it all evens out in the end, but people will still insist that isn't so. I've definitely had to leave more than a few tables just to get away from these folks.

Or better yet, I like to split tens, then they usually get up and leave.
