    Hypothetical mental exercise:

Let us say that I just took down the casino of your choice for a bundle. A BIG bundle. Now I want to start a Las Vegas Channel for cable. What should be the programming?

We can't play Vegas Vacation 24/7. There needs to be some variety here. We need to fill 61320 hours of airtime as cheaply as possible.

    My initial syndication buy:

    TV
    Las Vegas
    Vega$
    Route 66
    Viva Laughlin!

    Movies
The ouevre of Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Elvis Presley, Sammy Davis Jr., and Ann-Margaret
Ice Station Zebra (every night at midnight)

    Infomercials
The house feeds from various casinos on how to play craps, etc.

That's only a couple of months of programming, people! Help me fill the rest.

If they can do 24x7 sports, news and weather channels, surely there could be a 24x7 Vegas channel.

One show could be simply an overview of each hotel both strip and downtown.
Then break it down to show each type of room for each hotel.
Another show would be a walk through the casino. You know you can get lost in some of them.
Another show would be on the places to eat in each casino.

This alone should produce 100 different shows. Some 30 minutes and some an hour.

Don't forget to include the shows per hotel.

There is also the off strip stuff to see and do. That alone could be numerous shows.

For the casinos you could even do a 30 minute show for each type of table game that exists. This is another few dozen shows.

The same can be done for slot machines as well as new releases of slot machines.

Keep in mind you don't have to create unique shows because most of these channels will show the same show 3-4 times a day.

I say that a Vegas only channel is easily doable.

During certain times, you can add in Vegas specific shows and movies that already exist.

You could take all of those "Vegas Cheaters" and "Do's and Don'ts of Vegas" shows (that, by the way, I still watch) and update them to remove dated references to the Aladdin, or Anthony Curtis plunking two quarters (slowly) into a slot, then cashing out each win and putting the coins in his tub.

Dining revue shows, "tales" from the strip clubs etc, cabbie story shows. The possibilities are ENDLESS.

Reality show called "Vegas Virgins" - find people (from the forum!) who are going, follow their flight, checkin, casino experiences, dining, and of course there has to be a little drama, will they win? will they lose it all?

Vegas history, and films like Bugsy, Casino, Oceans (old and new), 21, Rounders, Owning Mahoney, oh man, limitless.

You could also have shows on other famous casinos, like in Monte Carlo, chains of casinos (Hard Rock Seminole)

You could ask for some aboriginal input from First Nations Casinos - there might even be some government grants for productions.

Top Ten list shows, like E! has of Top Ten Casinos in Vegas, in US, Shows.

Backstage views of how to prepare 3,000 meals for a conference, just the whole volume of stuff needed to put on a conference.

Maybe some shows from the Mandalay Bay beach? The House of Blues? Interview the musicians for their favourite (censored) Vegas memories.

I would also do some shows about the Vegas area, Grand Canyon, National Geographic stuff. You could even put in some old Fashion Television shows, "as brought to you by the Fashion Show Mall". As long as there is some kind of tie in.

You could run the Celine Dion movie, any biographical films with Elvis, any films with a theme of Chance or Luck (Castaway - that was quite a bet when he tried to sail home).

Don't forget foreign markets - there must be old BBC or Australian Broadcasting shows on Vegas - always interesting to get a different view.

    Hope this helps.

Run the old Frank Rosenthal Variety Shows, if they are on tape anywhere.

    No Celine Dion!!!

That's the one rule I'd insist on as producer and Head of Programming. Otherwise you guys are coming up with some good ideas. Keep them coming!

I would watch the hell out of a show about former burlesque/showgirls/performers - there must be a lot of retired ladies and gents from the heyday - you would get personal stories, photos, old film clips.

Dang, wikipedia has a page for everything:evillaugh

American Casino was a favorite of mine. The Casino - love to laugh at that one.

I was trying to find one I remember - reality-ish - had a dancer on it who was British? Can't remember if it was The Casino or something not on that list. I remember once she was doing the bikini bull riding at New Frontier:rolleyes2:

    Probably Vegas Showgirls......

How about some adaptations of old shows in an inexpensive Vegas format? i.e. Candid Camera in Vegas, People will do anything for money in Vegas, etc...
Updated Vegas information shows would be nice... you could get some cheap labor from some people on this board.(i.e. GregRio's Las Vegas Review)

You guys must have forgot CSI. They have made how many years of the original CSI? Syndication of CSI is what got NY and Miami CSI's going. They could play re-runs of that 5 hours a day at least

Perhaps, but it's only in-house. The one I want to start would be offered to cable and satellite companies nation-wide.

I wonder what would be the price to cover the 51's games?

At hotels in vegas they have that one channel that is nothing but a giant ad for that hotel.

i would watch a channel that just showed those ads one after the other. It would make me feel like I am in my hotel room.

I know this is the competition, but you could run shows about the various gambling mecca's around the world and compare the likes and differences.

Viva Laughlin? Wasn't that show cancelled after two or three showings?

Definitely a couple reality shows. I like the idea of the "A day in the life of a (fill in the blank)" -- host, concierge, show girl, valet, lounge act, chapel worker, etc.

And how about following some locals to get the real Vegas flavor -- folks that maybe deal with other locals as well as tourists. You could also do a show from the emergency room of a hospital and/or the police station.

And of course you'd need the requisite "Redneck Goes to Vegas" show.

I would have this channel on my TV non-stop. I'm willing to jump right in and host a show. :)

I didn't say it would occupy a lot of programming space. :D
