South Point

I am thinking about staying at South Point for my next trip to LV.

This will be a solo trip for me.

I have done some research and have a few concerns.

1> A lot of children. I have read there are a lot of families stay here. This is a big issue for me when in LV. What if I were to go after Labor day when school starts? Would there be a lot fewer children? What if I go before Labor day? Are there a lot of 35-45 year old guests that stay here?

2> What is the decor? If I am going to be in a place for an extended period, this is important. Wikipedia describes the theme as "Southern California." That sounds like it might work for me. What exactly is that? The gold plated exterior is not my style. I saw some interior pictures on the internet and there seems to be a lot of wood paneling which also is not my style. My style is contemporary.

3> I read that the sun reflects off the hotel and onto the pool area making it extremely warm. I might go in early August so that might be an issue. Is there any truth to it?

 

Very few children at Southpoint, and when they are there, they are mainly traveling from their rooms to the car to go Thhome.

The sportsbook at Southpoint is fast becoming one of the most respected in town.

They have no 100% or better video poker, although they have progressives that often rise above that.

Terriffic rooms at the Southpoint, highly recommend, as they are roomy, clean and fairly cheap.

The buffet rates a 6.5

 

I was at Southpoint this past weekend for a comedy show. There were tons of kids there. It is set up as a destination resort. They have bowling, movie theaters, arcades, and the equestrian center. Kids were all over in the non-gaming areas of the casino. However, they do have some slot machines in the hallways leading to the activities. I saw a lady playing a slot with her husband and two small children behind watching her.

That being said, it is a beautiful casino with a great selection of restaurants. I probably would not stay there, because I like to wander from casino to casino. I can't speak about the pool, just realize that any pool in Vegas is going to be hot in the summer.

All hotels are going to be full of kids during the summer, and all pools are going to be crowded. That's just a fact of life in good old Las Vegas. Of course Monday through Thursday won't be quite as bad as the weekends.

I like Southpoint very much, and find it a great value. I wouldn't, however, stay there if I didn't have a rental car because it's not within walking distance of anything.

1. There are going to be families and kids all over during the summer. Is it that critical that you have to plan your Vegas trip around that? I guess its not a factor for me. I'm not going to let others determine when I should go to Vegas.

2. Is it really that critical that you need a certain decor to enjoy a hotel? Southpoint is clean and nice. Its not an Aria decor(which is contemporary), but it works and its cheap. Other ones that would be similar to Southpoint, I would say is Monte Carlo, but just a little more gold in color. Other browns and dark colors would be M Resort and PH Towers.

3. I wouldnt worry about the sun reflecting on the windows. The sun is out and will be beating down on you on its own anyway. Plus the reflection from the pool happens anywhere and is just the same. Basically the windows arent a deathray and going to fry you. Not even a factor IMO.

 

I have not stayed there, but I have visited, and I would feel very comfortable with the decor, the casino, etc. The only concern most people with have is the distance from the strip, so look at that if it is important to you.

 

I agree. I really liked it. FWIW i stayed at the timeshare next door, so I always wound up playing there and ate at many of the restaurants /buffy.

 

This is our favorite place in Vegas... and I don't like cowboys, horses, or kids.(which the place was basically built for)
The reflection off the hotel onto the pool area is definitely noticeable and more-so in August. It is a nice pool area, but if you don't want 100degree heat with kids in the pool at SP, go after Labor Day. We'll be there the weekend after Labor Day again and have loved it over the last few years.
The decor is understated and really doesn't factor in good or bad. With the large rooms, great food choices, good pool, great casino, great service, etc. The decor never was a deciding factor for us.

My favorite place, too. Expect kids to ruin your pool area. You can usually hit the hottub in the morning, and it's not bad. If you are worried about pools, stay at South Point and buy a pool pass from Groupon/Travelzoo.

Locals. So, maybe not young adults like you're thinking. Generally older, but, a casino floor is a casino floor. Keep in mind, though, it's a nice short drive to many good places, and traffic is less congested compared to the Strip. I use it as a base to head to Spring Mountain Chinatown, Cosmopolitan, Venetian, Palazzo.

I agree decor is invisible but nice. The room exceeds most rooms I've stayed in for much higher price. Quiet and comforatable. If you do nightclubs, the Taxi Driver special at Coronado Cafe is a godsend.

All right. I am sold.

I think I am going to head out there in October.

The weather is still warm, rates are good, and the issues with the children and heat reflecting off the hotel will be mitigated.

Plus, I know I can make some money on the MLB playoffs.

 

Don't forget it's got the only Steak n Shake in town!

I also think its got the nicest movie theater in town as well.

 

The locals have nicknamed the joint "SmokeyPoint".

Very smoke infested with average ventilation, all in all a place one does not want to spend more than 1.5 hours of their day at.

 

I stayed there, and it was so far away from all the other action I barely felt like I was in Vegas. While a nice property, I felt i could have gotten the same experience here in So Cal at one of the nice indian casinos.

 

My favorite hotel in Vegas. We have stayed there the past 2 years. It is far removed from the strip if that is a concern for you. The only place I find the kids a pain is between the elevators and the pool. People forget that they hold huge events at the Equestrian Center and major bowling tourneys. These people tend to bring their kids...encountered many people checking in with rolling coolers and 3 kids in tow last trip. When talking to them in the elevator they were all there for the moto cross or the bowling tournement.

I love rich dark woods and their rooms are better IMO than most standard rooms on the strip. Price cannot be beat and their slots actually give you some play for your money. Their doors to the room are so heavy I can barely open them, makes them slam a little as far as noise...but also helps to keep the voice noise from the hallway out of your room.

 

Another concern of mine.

It is just a question of weighing the pros and cons of staying there. For me, the pros outweigh the cons.

I commend you for recognizing that doors can make a lot of make noise when closed. Most people don't care.

If I am not passed out from too much alcohol, I have been awoken from doors slamming.

If I arrive at my room late at night, when closing the door I hold it and turn the handle until it is closed in order to make the least amount of noise.

 

Given your quick by-car accessibility, I'd not overthink this and just do it, find out from personal experience if it's a place that works for you. If it's a bust, the hotel side of things is still nice, and you can spend your days/evenings elsewhere and then not repeat the mistake in the future. If it works out, you have another home port.

I've stayed there a number of times. I'm not sure what the "So Cal" vibe/look you talked about means. The casino is a typical Coast/Cousin-of-Coast box that's full of locals and bluehairs, with good-not-great gambling options, a workable array of eats, a pool with water, spa and, often, an event on site. It's about the most easily accessible joint in town for the driving crowd, and that proximity means you can get elsewhere in the valley easily.

 

JW- I almost forgot to pass on my biggest tip for an enjoyable stay at Southpoint: bring a roll of duct tape!

Here's the reason...

The hotel has an endless string of 1 gazillion watt spotlights that shine up and onto the hotel. The window curtains when drawn simply cannot hold back all that light. You need to tape the curtains to the walls if you hope to darken the room for sleeping.

I think you'll enjoy Southpoint - especially in October. Try and sweet-talk them into a mid-level room with a view.
