Have a hotel booked for Seattle next month and I see they have a "nominal daily internet fee". I called and asked how much?
    $11 per day! WTF!
    Anything else included? "No".

It is optional, unlike a resort fee but still, I must be so out of touch when you can call $11 per day, nominal.:nono:

NOMINAL: named as a mere matter of form, being trifling in comparison with the actual value; minimal. :poke:

CET charges more than that. $15 or $16 per day if I remember right. I don't think they call it nominal, but... I used to use it and pay for it with my points. Then Harrah's Rincon wouldn't let you use comps for the internet fee, so from that point forward, I just used the internet on my phone.

At least a couple of the CET properties call it "nominal", or did the last time I was checking.

I'm one of the few people who dont have a cell phone, but dont most of them now have internet? Seems like that $11 fee would appeal only to a few.

Joe, I travel quite a bit for my job (drove 18K last year, never left the state) and what I always find interesting is that I usually stay in hotels that are at La Quinta level, roughly $70-80 a night (hey, we are a non profit, gotta watch those costs) but every now and then I get to high end it in Denver or Vail or Telluride and hotel will be $160-180. The lower priced hotel will be FREE internet and the higher cost hotel charges me anywhere between $10-15 a night for internet. Seems backwards to me.

It sounds like they have a business center in the lobby with free internet access, but not wireless. I already booked early boarding on SWA for the return flight so I don't really need it, but visiting Seattle for the first time, I thought it would be handy in the room. Oh, well, they're not getting $11 from me.:nono:
Funny, I also called the hotel to ask if they had a resort fee after reading so much about them on VMB. They had no idea what I was talking about.

When you stay downtown in vegas it does skew your outlook towards staying at hotels in other cities.

No way would i ever pay for a hotel here in san diego, they are way too expensive.

We have stayed at several hotels in San Diego, but it was pre-laptop for me, so I never paid attention to Internet access. Yes room prices are very high, but I love San Diego, especially the Gas Light District. Haven't been there for about 8 years now and we used to always take a day trip to Tijuana. Always felt safe.

Not sure I would do that anymore? I don't know, maybe it's the same thing people fear when they talk about going to Fremont St and safety? I've never felt unsafe on Fremont, or the surrounding area.

Ignorance and too much media, but there are just so many stories about violence in Mexico.

I also love the Urbanrail system in SD. Very forward thinking unlike...never mind it would be deleted and I'd get a slap on the wrist-again.

I'm at the El Cortez right now and the price I'm paying is $11.99.

Walk to Starbucks, Micky Ds or MSS, Don. It's free, but I'm sure you know that.:poke:

There's just a different corporate mindset between road-side moteliers on one hand and the purveyors of city hotels, resorts and casinos on the other, as demanded by the customer base.

Sure, there are of course gonna be outliers, and in the end it is all about making as much money as possible, but if I'm cruising the 5 and need a layover, I'm less likely to have blind brand loyalty or a go-to-it-at-all-cost preference than I will when vacationing in Vancouver or Vegas. So if the AAA rating is similar, I'm going on price, and I'm certain all of the former will have a free brecky and wireless. (Admittedly, frequent stayer clubs have altered the formula somewhat from 20 years ago.)

When vacationing, I know what I'm going to get with a Four Seasons versus a Fairmont or Grand Hyatt, and if I'm a Strip denizen I'm in all likelihood a McHa$$ah'$ OR MGM Resorts customer, but not the other. We're all willing to "pay" something extra when we book brand loyal, whether that's the squallor of IP or the "nefarious" resort fee of Bellagio, and without doubt the awful relative odds of the Strip reflected at both. Gambler-travelers are some of the most "blind" travelers out there.

And if I go Ritz on vacay, I'm pretty sure I'm gonna have a high parking fee.

It's all just part of the suite of factors that make up our personal choices, and the corporations follow suit.

I used the kiosk they have by the tower elevators, it's 20 cents a min when you feed in cash, for a buck or two a day, I got my internet fix, along with online airline checkin.

Not an unsual amount these days... very rarely do I find "free" internet during my travels, which are somewhat frequent. That's about the going rate.

If you're paying a $100 a night it's a small part of the total price, when you're paying maybe $30 a night at the el-cortez, it makes one hesitate.

In 1999, I was on business trip to Washington DC, stayed at Marriott Courtyard, room was $189 night, then 14.99 a day for internet, plus $22 a day for valet parking (required) and taxes on top of that. But we did get free full breakfast and manager's reception in evening with free beer/wine. Nice place, but was shocked at $3500 hotel bill, glad it was business.

It's too hot outside. If I spend 15 minutes in my room on the internet, it pays for itself. Not playing VP.:evillaugh

Life isn't always a lowest-sum game. Any number of one-person's frills are another's essentials.

Putting it another way, isn't golf a waste of money, or flying across the country to lose money in a smoke-filled casino, or buying any vehicle above a Toyota Yaris?

Not criticizing anyone who wishes to pay the fee, or how they choose to spend their money Ken.

We've led a frugal, but not cheap, lifestyle and that has allowed us to quit working early (and no kids). My wife 8 years ago at age 52 and me four years ago at 55. Paying $11 per day for Internet access just flies in the face of how I've spent my life managing money. The same way a $100+ cell phone bill would be. We pay $8 each per month with Virgin Mobile. It's all a matter of personal choices and I am not critical of what people choose to do, or spend their money on. To each his own.:peace:

Yes, golf is a waste of money technically, but we both enjoy it. Internet on vacation ehh. It would have been nice if was free, but I'm not paying $11. I'll just have another glass of wine for that money, or maybe even two if it's happy hour.

Considering I dont have a laptop

It's a waste of money, but the biz travelers demand this so why not charge them $11 a day.
