For the record, this was not at the Aria which is the hotel icon I use in my signature. I do not want to disparage my favorite hotel.

My girlfriend were in a hotel. I pulled the sheets and blanket to our bed and there to greet me was a long strand of a female's hair. I took a facial tissue, removed it, and washed my hands.

I have read numerous hotel reviews on various web sites and when someone writes they found a hair in their room somewhere, it is the end of the world.

Is this how most people feel?

I meant to create a poll.

    What would you do?

    1) Remove it and wash your hands.

    2) Remove it and not bother to wash your hands.

    3) Call housekeeping and ask to have the sheets changed.

Honestly, and I know I'm gonna be waaaay in the minority here... I'd remove it with my hand and go to bed! I sleep at the Hard Rock 40-50 nights a year or so and I've never seen such a thing. I'm not saying' it wasn't there, I honestly just don't give the place the 3rd degree. Now if it was obvious to me, again I'd remove it and probably look to see if there were a lot more and if the sheets appeared clean... if it did, I'd go to bed.

For the record, when I use a public toilet... I also don't use those wax paper a#@ gaskets either.

For some reason, I did not consider the possibility the sheets where never changed after the previous guest left. If the sheets were changed, how else could a hair end up in the middle of our bed? It could have been the housekeeper, but how would it end up in the middle of the bed?

I'd remove it and wash my hands. I get a strong Ewww factor when I see other people's hairs on towels and such, and they always seem to cling to me. :(

Not a biggie if the rest of the room was clean but still I would have to have the sheets changed. Just because you don't know if it was from a previous guest or the housekeeper. It's not the hair...it's what you don't/can't see.

    Excellent point.

No way to know, but I am guessing the sheets were never changed. I am too trusting of people. I just couldn't imagine a housekeeper thinking, "The sheets look clean, I will just not change them."

If it happened again, I would call and have the sheets changed.

    For some people it is...

A lot of people really do get all up in arms about this stuff, but if they actually stopped to think about the world around them they wouldn't be able to leave their home.

Like if we take a trip to Las Vegas and start it when you get off the plane...

You walk to the luggage carousel and grab your bad. Its likely the baggage handler picked your bag up by the handle, who knows where his hand has been?

You exit and go get in a taxi to the airport. You pull the door shut and tell the driver what hotel you are going to - how often do you figure the cab driver wipes down the inside of his cab? Maybe once every couple of months? So that door handle has probably been touched by a thousand people since the last time it was cleaned...

You get to the hotel and the cabbie pulls your bag out of the trunk and takes your money - you stop and think: a guy whose job it is to sit down all day? He probably has a sweaty crotch and has been scratching it all day and he just touched the handle of my bag.

You go up to the front desk and while checking in you put your hand down on the counter - how many people have put their hand there since the last time it was cleaned? Its the hotel and they probably keep the place pretty clean so maybe just one or two dozen? Still a lot of people, who knows where there hands have been...

You go to the hotel and push the button on the elevator: again, since last cleaning how many people have pushed the button you just touched? Busier than the front desk and probably cleaned less frequently we're talking probably a few hundred people...

Up to your hotel room you open the door and go inside... assuming the maid wipes down the door handle to your room she was probably the only one who touched it since last time it was cleaned. Still... she is touching all the dirty bedsheets and used towels and such of guests in rooms she cleaned before yours.

In the room you kick off your shoes, ah its good to be finally here! Then you look at the carpet and think: when was the last time I saw them steam clean a carpet? Doesn't that mean that everybody who walked barefoot on this carpet since it was last shampooed the sweat from their feet has now been transferred to my socks?

Grossed out you put your shoes back on... uh oh! You just transferred all that bare foot sweat to the inner soles of your shoes and now every future pair of socks you wear will be contaminated. We won't even talk about when you put your shoes on barefoot later when you run to the ice machine...

You decide to get out of the room and go down to the casino...

Pretty obvious here: how many people touched that "SPIN" button on the slot machine or pulled the lever since the last time it was wiped down? Or touched the "DONE" button on the screen of the TITO/bill breaker machine? Or played with those casino chips since the last time they were washed? You look at the guy next to you at the table and he actually has a chip in his mouth... didn't you buy chips from this table too? He could have been suckling on the one in your hand right now.

You go to the buffet to grab some dinner. The plates and cutlery are nice and clean because you can feel how hot they still are... whew! But wait? Didn't the guy before you reach in to the same pile of utensils? Could he have touched the handle of the fork in your hand? And his fingers brushed at least the side of your plate...

And then as you dip that ladle in to the salad dressing you stop and think about how many people touched that ladle before you and if any of them bothered to wash their hands? And here you have fried chicken on your plate that you were planning on picking up and eating with your hands...

The point of this is: you come in to contact with trillions of bacteria and germs every day, yet some people would flip out about finding a single strand of loose hair in the middle of the bed. Even at a clean hotel like Aria after a couple of hours you have probably put your hand or touched where a few thousand other people have before you.

Sometimes even the hospital linens come back from the laundry with a hair on them - it probably just survived the wash.

I'd just remove it. What disease is that hair carrying?

Absolutey Auggie! Just so long as ya don't pick your nose or rub your eyes it's highly unlikely you'll catch anything from all that touching.

What kills me is the women who hover over the toilet seat in a public restroom. It's not only bad for the bladder due to incomplete emptying when the pelvic muscles can't relax but they pee all over the seat. What disease do they think they are going to catch sitting on a toilet seat?

Auggie, you didn't mention the TV remote control which has been handled by every guest and is not cleaned. Or, the coffee maker.

That which does not kill us makes us stronger.

I'd be more worried about the bedspread. I wonder how often they're washed? (I always fold them down or take them off.) I watched a documentary once and hotel bedspreads were found to have high levels of semen on them. Also found with high levels...baby cribs!! Not the linens, but the crib itself. Some things aren't worth knowing.:vomit:

The hair prob came from the chambermaid when she changed the sheets. I have long hair and it happens all the time at home.

I would have just removed it with my fingers and then washed my hands.

    Great thread... no pun intended.

The hair... I would have thrown it in the trash and not thought any more about it. I try not to get all worked up about things like this but my wife, a nurse, gets pretty carried away with some things but other things don't faze her at all because she is used to working with all sorts of digusting substances that come out of our bodies. I've intentionally chosen to do little things when I can and not worry overly much about any of it. For examples:

I will push the hotel bed spread to the end of the bed (by lifting sheets) and avoid touching it.

I avoid touching elevator buttons. I will push with the coat sleeve or sometimes with the edge of the door card key. But if I don't have anything handy, a knuckle will do.

Always wash hands after cashing in chips. Well, I will just use the wipes available at the cage if in a hurry.

I do get a little nuerotic with public restrooms. Avoiding touching just about anything and using towel or kicking open exit door. When I've run into a public bathroom that only has air dryers and a pull open exit door, I will wait for someone to come in or exit so I can follow without touching the door.

Always wash my hands after going to the bathroom... anywhere. Yes, some guys actually do this. Well... me, at least.

I shouldn't give this one away, but in general public places when I have to pull open a door I will use a part of the handle that is least likely to be touched by others. Don't be touching my spot!

Dang, they forgot to shave the housekeepers again.....

In all seriousness, I wouldnt think twice about it. People have hair. It falls out. I would not have the sheets changed, who is to say that the bald person who changes them this time washed their hands..... Just because there is no hair doesnt mean they are clean, and just because there IS a hair, doesnt mean they are not.

Hair in the bed ... I'm so lazy, I'd probably think of removing it, then think, "eh, it's already done whatever damage it might do." I'm gross.

Hair only bothers me in food.

I wonder if anyone cares that it was Female? Would they leave it because it was female, and not if it was male?
