Sounds more like a guaranteed break even with the possibility of a win.

I play MP for the cash, although I love craps and would play just mine as I would play my regular money anyways.

First, can say that article is an oldie and gets talked about from time to time so if there aren't many responses in this thread you can dig around and find one of the older ones.

Next, they say in the article that they were talking to novice gamblers, but craps is probably the most complex and intimidating table game for a novice, plus you never know at a craps table how long somebody is going to be shooting and so its not as cut and dried as one hand of blackjack or one spin of roulette.

Then I would say this strategy is overly complex. If you go to roulette and do $25 on red with matchplay, $25 on black with matchplay and then $2 on 0 (assuming a single zero wheel, otherwise you need to do another $2 on the 00)... then you win $75 if red or black comes up and $72 if the zero comes up. Minus your initial buy in of $52 you see either a $20 or $23 profit, its easy to make this wager, and you know the results as soon as the wheel has been spun.

After all that I would then say: why bother?

    - This is actually kind of lame, and it will make you look like a deadbeat to the casino.
    - Just so you can make a couple of bucks, you are giving up the value of the coupon: consider if you put a bet and your matchplay on any of the even money bets in roulette you are effectively getting paid 3 to 1 on a probability of almost 2 to 1... the math is pretty easy there: you have a 47% chance to triple your money.
    - You almost never see big money match plays, most of them are for $5-25 with maybe a rare few that go up to $50 (the casinos don't like to give out big ones for the previous reason). So that means one would be doing this for a very small amount of money... like really, they can't put a whole whopping $25 at risk for a one time thrill where the odds are actually in their favor? Why are they even at the casino then?

    Then there is the problems:
    - You need two matchplay coupons to begin with.
    - Almost all matchplays will only let you use one at a time, meaning you'll need to drag a friend along to partake in your penny ante scheme.
    - If they are $25 match plays and you do what the article describes the most likely outcome is going to be a $24 gain... if you are splitting that with your buddy thats only $12 each.
    - A lot of matchplays say on them that they can't be used for offsetting wagers. The wording is usually very vague and so that leaves it wide open for the casino to interpret it however they want... you might interpret that to mean you can't play a matchplay against your own bet or that you personally can't play a matchplay on red and a matchplay on black at the same time and thats why you brought your friend along... but again, how you interpret it doesn't matter... its all up to whatever the casino says and they might just say that no two players, whether you know eachother or not, can play a matchplay on the same event.

Anyhow, in the end this isn't something I would do. I play my matchplays on black on roulette. Sometimes I win, sometimes I don't... but in the long run I will be ahead.

    Not really

-" This is actually kind of lame, and it will make you look like a deadbeat to the casino."

It is actually a smart use of a matchplay--FREE money. And I don't care what the casino thinks...gamblers who are looking t maximize EV of everything they play take advantage of all the freeplay & matchplays they can get their hands on; and anyway you can guarantee you EV, go for it.

I love matchplays & we did a coupon run a few years ago when ACG/LVA were loaded w/ freeplay & matchplays. Got 4 books, took Mom & Dad, got a rental car & mapquested it all out. It was a blast. Hit some casinos that would NEVER have hit our radar. Pulled up at the Bighorn at 8AM on a Monday & DH & my dad refused to get out (sketchy area). Mom & I said get over it...the pit boss about jumped for joy when 4 tourists walked in. Dad loved it--he could learn to play blackjack at HIS pace--slowly. Pit boss gave him a dozen decks of cards, we at the diner--a hoot! I think we about broke even overall with all the casinos we hit. Fun, different experience. One of our most memorable Vegas trips ever.

I do remember doing black/red roulette matchplay at JW Marriott...they weren't too keen on it, but they did let us.

That being said, I can't do MPs w/ DH--he kills the EV as he insists on continuing to play at the table after his MP is gone...EXACTLY what the casino hopes everyone will do w/ MPs!

Agree. Just play the money however you would normally play.

Wait, here is an alternative. Two people get together. They give each other $25 and go home. Even, steven.

A while back I had $1000 matchplay coupons and I went through the whole scenario of craps vs roulette vs baccarat for them. Ultimately I was not willing to risk $1000 in one spin so I hedged with a friend and walked away with $500, I wasn't as well versed in craps as I am now, but I think if I had known more, I would have played craps - possibly similar to the article.

For low players, I think it's an ok. use of them simply because of the anticipation - one spin, hit, whatever and done isn't as exciting as the possibility of several rolls before you find out.

I like this story sometimes it is nice to feel wanted or respected at a place you might not really even want to be at VS being treated like a piece of furniture at "the" place to be.....not saying you are treated like that at any place, but when you read report after report on this forum of people pretty much not getting something they were paying for or that they had probably "earned" in comps it is not hard to figure out why some of the "in" places are going broke

my brother would have moved into the place if they had a couch with a TV and a remote and had given him 12 decks of cards for "free"

    Monthly mailers and couples...

Often a couple who each receive monthly mailers from a casino will do this as a way of funding their "date night". They take the guaranteed winnings and invest in a slot machine or a Dinner and drinks or something.

If they start to win... they have a great time, if not... well it was better than staying at home watching the coupons expire.

That's not a 50/50 proposition. Most think it's either red or black, but remember the evil 0/00. There are always 37 or 38 spots on a roulette wheel. 18 black/ 18 red/ and 1 or 2 green.

You can lose both on 0/00. Same idea but without that problem, bet on player and banker at Baccarat (probably get a friend to make the 2nd bet). You push on a tie, not lose.

    I'm glad you like it!

My dad is a middle class midwestern guy. He plays machines as tables intimidate him--particularly the speed of the tables. He is analytical, so he wants time to process the game. It was just him & my DH at the BJ table, so they allowed him to go at his pace--he did feel like a king. We then went to the Cannery, and he felt a bit more comfortable w/ BJ, so played there--and they were patient as well.

It was those matchplays that inspired the trip--worth the experience!

Thanks I think I'll give it a go. I probably should have posted this in the frugal thread. I don't really gamble but do take advantage of free play and free money. $24 in free money is a nice perk for us and I could care less what they think as long as they let me do it.

Thanks for the $52/$54 roulette idea, I will try that one too with money instead of match play.
