Leaving the night before early check-out, do they need to know?

    Hi all,
Wasn't sure if this is the right section but, I am currently booked for a 3 night stay, compd at Bellagio. I'm supposed to check out Sunday morning but due to high costs in flights, have booked a late Sat. night flight @ 10:00pm. If I leave the night before, Sat, at like 7:30pm, do I tell them? Do I sneak out and call them in the morning? I suspect my gambling will be done by then anyway, can I settle the express comps that early?

What if I don't call them in the morning, do they automatically check you out? Has anyone ever done this? I know I read about this before but couldn't find the thread -so very many thanks in advance....:peace::nworthy:

If you want to apply any express comps towards your room, you may need to checkout. It may be possible to do this over the phone, I just think it might end up being annoying.

If it is all settled up and you are fine with anything from your room going on your credit card, there rarely is a reason you need to checkout. I generally try to, but twice I was simply unable due to a long line. Nothing odd happened and I assume they assumed I just left.

We sometimes leave for home after an early dinner with friends. We don't want to stash our bags between normal checkout time and departure, so we will keep the comped room for an extra night and use it throughout the final day. I stop by to settle the bill and use up express comps/TR rewards before I go up to the room to grab the bags to depart. The first couple of times that I did this, I told them that I would be racing out of there in the wee hours to catch a flight, so wanted to take care of everything in advance. But I really don't think the casino cares as long as they've gotten the play from me that they expected. Certainly, the employees have always treated it like a relatively routine process.

The one caveat is that we've only done this when the final night was a Sunday or weekday, not on a busy Saturday night. So your mileage may vary.

A very high percent of people just leave when they are ready to go home. No front desk, etc.

You will have no problem. If you have charges that you want on Express Comps, just stop down that evening and say you want that taken care of , and leave the rest on the credit card. They don't know or care when you actually leave. As far as they know, you left at 4am.

Why people continue to stand in long checkout lines, I will never know.

I don't think I've waited to check out in like 5 years!

As long as you are happy with your account (room charges, etc.), you can simply leave.

Another option: Most hotels also have an express checkout option, where you fill out a little checkout card and drop it in a "mailbox" somewhere between the elevators and the main door out (where the taxi stand is).

There is always the option to fill out the Express Check Out card and drop in the check out boxes (usually near the elevators.)

I've done it before. At worse, your host can apply your express comps to your bill and get your credit card charges refunded. That happened to me once, and the charge was refunded the day after I returned.

Thanks everyone! - You know this wouldn't be a problem if airfare wasn't so darn expensive ;)

We leave on the last flight out every trip and we keep a room as if we were staying the extra night every time.
It's too easy to get accustomed to having a room to not have one for the last few hours of your trip! Generally I walk up to the club booth around 4 on the last day and say "I have a flight early in the morning and I want to settle up". That has taken care of everything at all of the MGM and CET properties we've stayed at in the last six years.

All excellent advice (don't forget you can check-out on most interactive TV's too), except for the part about just leaving and the hotel assuming you've checked out. The hotel does not have to assume anything, and can charge you for multiple nights even if you were scheduled to leave. Been there, done that, won't be so foolish again. Especially when it's so easy to checkout in less than 60 seconds, or at least give them a phone call from the airport.

I hope you didn't have to pay that...it's hard to imagine any reputable hotel doing such a thing. If a hotel tried to pull that kind of scam, you can argue for them to produce the door access logs to show you were actually in the room past the check-out. Most keycards stop working at the due check-out time on the day you are supposed to leave.

Personally, I try to check-out on the TV, if that fails, I just leave. Never had issue and I stay in approximately 70-80 hotel rooms per year.

Never heard of this happening. I have thousands (easily) of hotel nights. Hundreds in casinos. Almost never checkout at desk, are rarely on TV system.

Tell us more about the situation you were in that resulted in extra charges.

I always check out on the TV and I have been informed the room is not 'officially' checked out of until housekeeping keys enter the room and exit.System then clears the room for new keys/guests. Officially meaning you are checked out and clear, but not available to new guests.
This info coming from Comp skippers who like to stay in thier rooms WAY past check-out time.

I only 'check-out' of a room if I'm concerned about the bill or need points/comps to reduce it.

The one point I'd like to make here is for the people who say they keep the room for an extra day/night out of convenience. Just know that this likely hits your ADT pretty hard. It can reduce your 'offers' going forward. I've never been denied a late check-out (between noon and 2pm) and the bell hop will gladly store your luggage.

Seattle-area, 2005. Was running late w/ a group (who had the car) and so ran by the front desk instead of stopping to check out on the day scheduled. Two extra days of room charges on the credit card, requiring two phone calls and a fax'd letter (of all things) stating that I was not in the room before they reversed it, stating very clearly that I was responsible for not checking out but that they'd be "kind enough" to reverse the charges given our corporate account. Since I had the only card key, I know no one else was in the room if you're asking about the logs. Four-star national chain BTW.

I suppose that the corporate reservations may have had an error, or that there's some standing policy of an indefinite checkout for the account. I really doubt either were true.

Now I know that this is the exception and that any reasonable hotel will assume a checkout in this day and age. The comment about automatically locking out the card right at checkout, though, is not correct, if for no other reason than to avoid separating the room occupant from their luggage (or something more precious, like a child). Maybe a Motel 6 will be stupid enough to do it - my keys were locked out by a typo last trip, but that was 10:00 PM. The maid service piece makes some sense; hopefully that's a common policy. But there is an obligation to notify of departure, unless the hotel discharges that obligation (typically with a receipt slid under the door the night before clearly stating, "...drop keys at front and leave if you wish.")

No big deal - call the front desk from the room if you wish. Use the hotel stationery and write, "Bruinfan has checked out of room 23456 7/6/12" if you must. Best advice I was given: "Check out or watch them charge a late check-out fee". Like the hotels check those key-return boxes right at 11:00 AM....but better safe than sorry.

Interesting point. In our case, keeping the room an extra night without sleeping there almost always leads to a full afternoon and evening of extra play (chasing our losses?) for the host casino, which I have always presumed boosts the overall trip ADT. But maybe I should bounce it off a casino host to be sure.

Actually, this is the case at CET properties. It's happened to me multiple times where my automatic late checkout for being 7-stars was not setup properly. I'm not sure any responsible parent would leave a child alone in the room. My word against yours I suppose, but if anyone would like to confirm on their next visit to a CET property, feel free.

I consider checking out a courtesy. Our typical flight is around 9:00 a.m. so we are usually out of the room by 6:30 a.m. If you are leaving earlier than the check-out time, then why not "check-out" of the room so it can be cleaned and someone else can get into their room early?

Your key at CET was locked out at 11:00 AM (or regular check-out deadline) on check-out day? That's a hotel with a lot of phone calls, angry customers, and distracted maids. Now if you tell me that it locks out at 2:00 PM, that I'd find quite normal. If it wasn't clear, I wasn't suggesting there's never a lockout. I was suggesting that it doesn't happen on the stroke of midnight...for a whole ton of good reasons.

As for responsible parents...that's definitely for another thread. All I'll say is try dragging an 8-year old to the vending machine while they're playing a game, or watching a show.... :peace:
