VP is not my main game but I like it to play to slow it down, kind of like what like Pai Gow is to table games... So mostly I play deuces wild.

Reading everyone's fun stories about DBP or DDBP I wanna play that too - but which? DB or DDB what are the pros & cons of each?

Which is it easier to gain proficiency?

    Thx!

I don't know anything about DB.

But I love DDB because you can win a lot with 4 of a kind. The downside is that you only get 1 credit for two pair. So if you don't hit 4 of a kind (or a royal flush), you'll lose your money a lot faster than a game like jacks or better or bonus poker.

Full pay DB (100.17%) is probably a little easier to find than full pay DDB (100.07%). DB has lower variance than DDB but is still a fairly high variance game.

I find DB strategy less intuitive than DDB. DDB is a relatively easy transition from JOB. Correct DB strategy takes a bit more thinking about with 3 to a straight and similar.

I'll let the experts take it from here!

I would go with DDB. Correct play in DB is a little harder to master.
The only real quirks with DDB is if you have two pair with aces, throw away the other pair. And, if you have an aces full house, throw away the pair and go for the 4th ace, hopefully with a kicker.

All the key points are here except one that was recently pointed out to me - JOB strategy played on 10/7 DB gives better return than JOB. But the variance is still higher.

To keep it simple, go with DDB - just be lucky. It's quads or die.

I'd agree w/ everybody else....DDB is much more intuitive than DB and better 4OAK payoffs. The one strange (to me) hold in DDB is 4 to an inside straight. I'm sure mathematically it pans out or it wouldn't be the "correct" hold but I rarely hold it. Depending if I'm up or down and how close it is to the end of the trip, I sometimes toss a second pair when the other pair is J, Q or K. Especially if the FH's just don't seem to be hitting...I'd rather have a shot at 4OAK for $250. What can I say...I'm a rebel..LOL:poke:

The other different hold for DDB (versus JOB or BP) is if you get 3 "consecutive" and open ended (JQK) and pair up one of the face cards (the 5th card would be some junk card), you throw the pr and keep the 3 to the RF. But if the are not open ended (QKA) and you pair the Q's, the correct hold is the Q's

If you really want to play a high vareince fun game, try TDB....4 Aces w/ a kicker pays the same as a RF. But, not only does it ding you for 2 pr like DB and DDB, it also reduces the payout on 3OAK to 10 from 15 credits.

Decided to play the $1 game at Encore my last morning on our recent trip. Put in $100 and w/ $15 left, I hit 4 Aces but no kicker....still a nice $800 hit. Usually though, the outcome is you go thru that last $15and either pump it again or walk:rolleyes2:

Less thinking sounds good - usually I am doing less thinking from more drinking when I play VP

Good tip, that makes sense.... I have been practicing on Wizard of Odds - good enough for learning the quirks? I may have an advantage in learning the quirks since I am not a JOB player I don't have to unlearn the JOB hard & fast rules to change to DDB.

Quads or die, a clarion call! So DDB has less of the live to have another hand attitude?

That 4 to an inside straight is weird to me too - seems very counter intuitive & goes against the live to fight another day in search of the royal overall VP idea. I guess I will start out at quarters for a while until I feel comfortable to go $5 a pop - of course I will kick myself if I get a hand like you did but what are the odds? lol.

    Thank you guys so much!

Each trip we go to Vegas and stay at MSS which has full-pay JOB. I promise myself that is what I am going to play the entire trip, then one of two things happen.
I either get bored because of only 125 for a quad, or I hit a low quad with the kicker and just kick myself for playing JOB. Or worse, is to hit quad Aces.

Usually by the end of the first day, I'm back on DDB.:poke:

Joe, I used to do the same thing w/ BP and DDB. Now I quit fooling myself and go to Vegas knowing I will be playing DDB the first day and off an on the whole trip. If I'm feeling conservative or getting my a$$ handed to me, I switch to BP and just tell myself that it would'nt have been the same hand that that the RNG created had I selected DDB when those quad A's or 2,3,4,'s come up.

    Learning the Strategies

Go to Google and find the free "Frugal Video Poker" software to download. It doesn't look fancy, but is amazingly complete. You can play pretty much any game and let it coach you, and print out the correct-play strategy chart for use when you're sitting at the real thing. Best free gaming software I've ever used.

Lol, that's what my wife tells me every time I start bitching that I should have been on DDB. It is no consolation.

I like double bonus because the pay table is over 100%, but correct strategy as others have said, is counterintuitive and requires study and practice.
The best DB in the world is at the Four Queens, full pay and a royal progressive on top of that. Look at the back wall.

One issue with all the Bonus games is that they are more volatile. In Double Bonus the game depends on quads. If they never come, it grinds us down. Games that pay 2 on the two pair are less volatile. However, as others have noted, it is a bit hard to really cheer for every two pair, and hitting quad Aces makes us wish we were on some sort of Bonus game.

A fine mix of the two is simple Bonus Poker as long as the pay table is full pay for that game. The strategy is almost like JOB, but you have a shot at a better hit when you hit certain quads. The problem is that the pay table is not great. However, you can overcome some of that if you play the D Vue bar game as there are three progressives, low paying quads, straight flushes, and royal. So that helps the EV. I hit the royal for $1105 last trip and right afterwards the straight flush for $10 more than the basic table. Two trips ago I hit the quads twice for almost $20 more than the basic table. Go with paytable notes in dollars and see if the progressives are up or not for the best EV.

Joe that's the way you gotta look at it. Try BP instead of JOB at least it has better 4oak payouts and a lot of times you'll find the rest of the pay table the same as JOB.

Thanks Dewey - No offense to anyone but I tried JOB a few trips ago & it was b-o-r-i-n-gzzzzzz... is Bonus poker as routine as JOB?

And what is "the D Vue bar game"?

Thanks marksind - I am going to look for that now, I wish there was a trainer for my android.

BP is not quite as exciting as DDB but it's not nearly as boring as JOB either.

BP still pays 10 credits for 2 pr and for those that don't play much VP, you'd think "so what?" But 2 pr hits "all the time" and makes a huge difference in keeping you in the game for longer periods and that's what it's all about....being there for the RF.

A lot of casino's even have the same pay tables (7/5) for $1 BP that they have for JOB and BP pays $400 for 4 Aces, and $200 for four 2,3,4's and then the std $125 for 5-K 4OAK.

To me, if you're taking a break from DDB or DB (if that's a persons game) playing BP versus JOB is a no-brainer.

For those of us on the East Coast 9/6 JOB is usually the best you can get. Once in a while NSUD, but usually 9/6 JOB is all you can get. Sometimes settle for 9/6 DDB which is only 98.98% payback.
