My mom has played in the past and says that she used to get frequent wins often, mini to major jackpots. But she feels that gambling is not as fun these days because little pays well no matter how many hours she plays unlike before. Long-time players notice any difference? Or is this an age-old complaint?

Yes, I have noticed it. I used to get a jackpot every time I was in LV. But not any more. Like you, I just get small stuff, nothing major. It's been at least 7 yr since I got a hand pay. I have heard it both ways on slots, they can't program them any tighter, but the reality of it is....they do. It costs a whole lot to run a casino, and how do you think pays for that, the one arm bandits, that don't have a sick day(except when they are broken) and don't have any workers comp. Anyway, I just play for fun, and don't let it get out of hand. I enjoy playing slots, and pull up to a blackjack table when my fingers get sore. It's all for entertainment!

Age-old complaint, along with observational bias. Have the slot odds been dialed down overall? Sure. Is it enough to be significant to the results of a single player, even over multiple visits? Unlikely.

Oh, we definitely think that. We used to always hit at least one hand pay on a 3/4 day trip - but haven't hit a hand-pay in Vegas in years. We attribute it to our playing too many of the "bonus" type video slots which basically are there to entertain us without the best payouts - instead of the good old fashioned 3 reel type machines that we used to play.

Cant say so in LV, I would say at least the last 5 years we have been about the same each trip there, a few really good hits and the last two trips we have paid for the entire trip through wins. Locally I can guarantee the wins are much fewer and further between the last 2 years compared to the previous 6.

Though many say it is a pain for the casinos to swap out the chips for a lower payout, I am sure they have done so over the years.

But, one of the reasons you see less hand pays is the advent of the TITO. Many machines were programmed to do hand pays so the machine did not have to spit out so many coins. Sometime more than it could hold. Remember when they had to come around and put more coins in?

Also, just my opinion, but I think they also liked hand pays cause it would get people excited. I do know that at the Horseshoe Tunica casino they were on a mission a few years ago to eliminate all hand pays under $1200. Took them awhile to get all machines working right. Guessing it was to cut down on labor.

Also, some of those multi line machines have some very high payouts if you get all 50 possible lines hit. The older machines with smaller jackpots would of course hit more often. Same 90% +/- hold, but it seemed like they hit more.

I think a large part of this is that in the last few years, maybe 3-4 years specifically, the slot manufacturers have set up the games where there are a lot less frequent small wins and in exchange there are more big wins.

Like going back 6-8 years ago if you were playing a penny slot machine at 1 credit per line you almost never saw a win over $40, unless it was lining up 5 of the logo symbols in a row and then in that case it'd usually pay around $80-120 - talking about games from the era of Frog Prince, Cleopatra, Mystical Unicorn, Catch a Wave, etc.

But in the last few years the slot manufacturers have made the machines a lot more volatile which means that you get a lot less of those little wins, but in exchange the chance at a gigantic win is possible - where a 30 cent spin (30 lines, 1 penny per line) can actually win you prizes upwards of $200-300.

But as said, the tradeoff for being able to hit those $200 wins on a 30 cent spin is that you get a lot less of the 20 cent to $1.50 wins (example) on the machines today.

Agreed, on some machines.... However, the original Goldfish is a prime example of a machine that continually has smaller payouts. You will rarely see a large hit on those machines, but the frequent bonus rounds pay 5x to 10x credits wagered as often as i've ever witness from a slot.
