I don't know if this question belongs in the downtown section or the frugal section or this section. Please move if I put it in the wrong spot.

I'm looking at the menu for Magnolia's Veranda off the website for the 4 Queens and it lists a 24 hour ribeye steak for $11.95. Vegas.com has a prime rib special listed at this place for $9.95 between 4pm and midnight. I don't see the prime rib special on their menu. Is it the same thing, just on special at those times? Is the prime rib special not on the menu?

They advertise it out front as a Player's Club special. You have to request the special price. It's very good, much better than Tony Roma's or Gold Spike's. On par with California's special. I've found Dupar's at Golden Gate to vary widely in quality.

I'm pretty sure that when we went a few trips ago, that when we signed up for a player's card they also gave us a buy one get one free for the Magnolia's, too.

Do they have the prime rib special all the time or just at certain times of day?

Also, do you know if you can use the American Casino Guide coupon on the prime rib special? I mean if hubby gets the prime rib special, can I use the coupon to get the equal or lesser value item free? (I don't do prime rib)

ChiFan, I think the prime rib special at Market Street Cafe, California, is a pretty good deal. Granted, it is a true cafe setting.

The special is valid with ACG BOGO. It's available daily from 4 pm to 11 PM.

I think I had to join the player's club to get the discount, and it was decent but I do enjoy the prime at the California much better. The waiter left much to be desired. It wasn't enough of a deal to get me back IMHO but it is sometimes hard to form an opinion with just one trial.

Having had both specials many times, I've found the prime rib to be of equal quality overall, but Calif has a better deal, as you can get a no-limit salad bar included as well as a rather large Cherries Jubilee. The downside is a typically long wait unless you sit at the counter. Magnolia's service can run the gamut from fast and friendly to slow and surly, but the atmosphere and view, as well as being right in the heart of Fremont, make it a worthy choice indeed.

What hours is the Market Street special, Sam? I'm staying at MSS in August and definitely plan to hit that up. I'm sure I'll have another meal at Magnolia's Veranda though. Like you said, the location alone makes it too convenient not to visit at least once per trip.

I believe the special is from 4pm to 11pm, but the salad bar is only until 9pm, after which you can get a side of soup or salad (not 100% sure on that).

I had dinner late one night at Magnolia's Veranda. It was pretty bad but to be fair it was late. Is the meat tender if you order it earlier in the day? I mostly eat prime rib at Lawry's. How does it compare? I love Prime Rib but I don't like to chew it like a piece of jerky.

    Magnolia's Prime Rib

I've had the prime rib special several times at Magnolia's. For the price, it's fine, but you'll never confuse it with a fine steakhouse. Last week I tried the prime rib at Market Street Cafe at the California. The hostess said they get it from the same place as the Four Queens. She said one supplier supplies all the bargain prime rib, at least downtown. It seemed pretty much the same as Four Queens - that is, OK for the price, but nothing to rave about. The California has a salad bar that is included, and it was pretty decent. Overall, I'd rate their $9.99 special as a tad superior to the Four Queens because of the salad bar.

A friend dining with me is somewhat of a food snob. He likes the finer steak houses like Lawry's, Morton's, and Ruth Chris. He found the prime rib barely edible and said it was the worst dinner of the five we had during the week. I'm not particular, but still found it nothing special. Nonetheless, it's a good deal for the price. The hostess said no one makes money on it, it's just to get people onto the property.

Which takes me off topic - video poker - Four Queens tops California. Table games, California tops Four Queens (I can't believe it's hard to find a 3/2 blackjack table at Four Queens).

Good observations. The trick at the Cal is to figure out when dinner is on Hawaiian time, and not go then.

We ate there Tuesday night at 6:30. No line. at 7:30, huge line as people started to get hungry.

You can always skip the line and eat at the counter. It's fun.

I've found the service at Magnolia's to be excellent except for one particular person who was a bitch.

Clearly, you had the same person... :)
