Just thought I'd share a quick baccarat story.

I was in the Gold Coast (Australia) on a quick vacation and the wife and I and a Toronto friend wandered to the Jupiter Casino. No intention of playing as the odds are really bad but I always enjoy checking casinos out. I'm sure one day when I'm retired I will basically casino hop, as Casinos tend to have great bars, great shopping and great restaurants around and within them.

So we wander through the casino and it's absolutely packed - every table is taken, most people playing $10-$15 / hand. I wander to the poker and they have a 5-10 NL game going with a rake up to $20 / hand. If you know anything about poker you'll know that that rake is insane. Vegas rakes $4 / hand or a set fee of $8/hr. $20/hand at 5-10NL would mean approximately $500 is coming off the table every hour to the house. I would possibly consider playing if the players were the fishiest in the world, but I decided to pass.

We next wander over to the baccarat - four tables, minimum bet is $25 (full tables, not mini-baccarat) and it's crowded. Most people are betting the minimum but there are a couple of $50-$150 bettors. We notice a crowd start to gather as one older fellow buys in for $7,500 in cash. Seems like a silly decision because he's clearly the biggest better we can see in the casino and while there's not a lot of crime in the Gold Coast, everyone is watching him.

Anyway, he starts off with $800 and loses. His next bet is $1,500 and he loses that as well. His third bet, $2k, wins.

He then went on a rush like you wouldn't believe. Max bet at the table was $5k, and pretty soon he had $75k in front of him. Very quickly a pattern emerged at the table - 3 bankers, then 3 players, then 3 bankers, then 3 players. He picked up on it quickly and played it perfectly, always switching to the other side after 3 in a row, keeping his max bet of $5k out there each time. As the highest denomination chip they had was $500 they had to keep refilling the rack.

A bunch of times people bet against him with $25, which was kind of annoying, especially when they'd slowly squeeze the cards and make a big scene out of it, but this guy just kept going.

For a giant, modern casino you'd think they wouldn't sweat this kind of action but when you consider what others are betting and the fact that they only had $500 chips on the floor you could see the crowd of both patrons and staff start to crowd him. It was annoying that my wife (she's small and asian) would stand a respectful level back and people would just move in front of her, both blocking her view and getting uncomfortably close to the actual bettor.

It's nice once in a while for a casino that really gouges it's patrons to take a nice hit like this.

I know both sides of the argument, but in Bacc, if a clear pattern emerges I FEEL it is better to run with it rather than fight it.

As an Australian I can quite confidently state that Jupiters deserves to lose a hell of a lot more money than this.
