New Vegas TV show, called... "Vegas"

What it is: This period drama was one of the 20 pilots we hoped would get picked up to series. Based on the true story of Ralph Lamb, a Las Vegas sheriff who battled mobsters in the '60s, it stars Dennis Quaid (Enemy Mine), Michael Chiklis (The Shield), Jason O'Mara (Terra Nova), and Carrie Anne Moss (The Matrix).

Initial reaction based on description alone: This is a bit of departure for CBS, but look at that cast! We'll definitely be tuning in.

My guess at the show's chances of survival even though I haven't seen a second of footage: I'm just gonna say this is CBS's biggest hit of 2012-2013. Whether that comes from the audience or critics, we'll see.

Where CBS might schedule it: If CBS were to move The Mentalist, this would pair great with Person of Interest.

If it's set in the 60's then there isn't going to be much of the Strip in it - it'll have to be mostly interiors and desert.

To a real Vegas fanatic, it's probably going to seem like a pretty generic cop show.

 

The show's premise:
Ralph Lamb (Dennis Quaid) wants to be left in peace to run his ranch, but 1960s Las Vegas is now swelling with outsiders and corruption which are intruding on his simple life. Recalling Lamb's command as a military police officer during World War II, the Mayor appeals to his sense of duty to look into a murder of a casino worker – and so begins Lamb’s clash with Vincent Savino (Michael Chiklis), a ruthless Chicago gangster who plans to make Vegas his own.


Its being scheduled for the 10PM Tuesday nights, which is a good spot for the shows chances to make it a full season since it'll be going up against Private Practice and Parenthood, both shows that get good critical support but can't draw viewers, and a new show: The Mindy Project, an hour long medical sitcom focusing on a female character.

I'd love to see Chiklis as a gangster... I'll be watching.

1960's Vegas

If it is set in the 1960's we will see cars and clothes from the 1960's that
will look like the 1950's because in the early 1960's we Americans still had the 1950's style of dressing and drove 1950 cars that hardly ever broke down and were easy to fix.

I also remember that Vegas had a lot of Motels like the Vagabond and La Councha right on the strip.

The slot machines had real coins. The buffets were real cheap like $2.99.
The Golden Nugget had real Victorian furniture.
I remember the Imperial Palace always looking like a dump full of cigerette
smoke in their casino.

It will bring back memories of how cheap it used to be to stay at the Vegas
hotels and also eat at buffets.

The downtown area had some "Meadows" grasslands. I would like to see
that if possible. The old seniors who were born in Vegas remember seeing
the Meadows. The name of "Las Vegas" means "The Meadows." LucyR.

If the show has enough of a budget they could conceivably create a CGI version of 60s Vegas Strip (just like in the film Casino where the fictional "Tangiers" was plopped right in the middle of the Strip).

Without significant CGI I don't think the series can make it because in Vegas, each casino is a very prominent and significant character.

 

You only need to watch Boardwalk Empire, or various new films to know that re-creating the past is no longer a technical problem.

Those details do matter to 95% of the viewership because anyone who would watch this show (even if they were not Vegas-crazy like we all are) would want a period piece that looks like it is set in the proper period. You can't set a show in 1960's Las Vegas and use any footage at all of what Las Vegas looks like today, since the Strip would have to figure prominently or else there is no point in setting it in Las Vegas - they would only be able to show interiors lol

 

Everyone is setting themselves up for disappointment.
95 % care ?.....no, this is a TV series with TV budgets -
not a "documentary time piece" movie.
That's my REAL point.
I mean look at the set in the trailor --
c'mon !
Does The Golden Nugget sign look real to you ?

However, the sparse desert landscape they can find a place
( that exists today )+

I happen to work in the television industry - for a major tv network - and you have no idea how large some "tv" budgets are.

 

True, but I have worked in companies that specialise in 3D design and CGI and you have no idea how massive the bill for that can be.

You could easily spend 2 mill an episode if you wanted to make a realistic recreation of the strip.

 

After looking at the clip (I had replied initially on my iphone this morning and just read the article) it doesn't look like CGI - it looks like they built a couple of studio sets to look like the main casinos on Fremont Street etc...which is exactly what the production company behind Boardwalk Empire did. They built a recreation of the Prohibition-era Atlantic City Boardwalk on a strip of waterfront land in Brooklyn. And the cost of the pilot for "Boardwalk Empire" alone came in at $18 million.
