Booked in on a flight/hotel package, Carson Tower. Will be giving the $20 trick a whirl, hoping for a room a bit closer to the casino (I hear the Carson is literally 3 blocks away). Anyone know what I should be asking for, or if I'm wasting my time (Memorial Day w/e, check-in Thursday night).

    thanks folks - cheers!

If you go on their website you will see that it's usually about $20 to get a nicer room...you might just want to ask them what upgrades are available because depending on what you want your $20 might cover it.

It is too late now but I highly recommend anyone who's interested to consider buying the landrys select club card for $25... It comes with $25 per-loaded on the card for use at any landrys restaurants (bubba gumps, claim jumper, chart house, etc) and it gets you a free upgrade at the GN and free VIP check-in (supposedly only when you book direct). You also get an additional bonus $25 credit added to the card in your birthday month.

The Gold Tower rooms are just off the casino floor, so you might ask for one of those. The Rush Tower is newer, but not as close to the casino floor as the Gold Tower.
The Carson Tower rooms are still nice though, and are definitely NOT three blocks away from the casino floor.

It probably never hurts to try the $20 trick. Even if it fails, I don't think you'll be disappointed with the Carson Tower.

But some of the Carson tower rooms ARE 3 blocks from Fremont St..... 2 blocks back, 1 block over.

The Rush Tower rooms are not far from the casino floor. 30 second walk off the elevators.

I'm wondering if due to the long weekend upgrades might be harder to come by. I seem to remember being stuck in a handicapped room at MGM on some 'spring break' weekend because they were 'full'.

    Update to my OP:

Well, the $20 trick went like this: We get there, only one other person checking in. Fold up my bill and have it under my VISA. Place both on the counter with the bill just peeking out while I get my ID out. Desk man lifts my VISA off the bill and says "I'm sorry we can't accept anything. They are really keeping an eye on us". I didn't even have a chance to ask anything. So I felt like a dork, then realized I didn't need to feel like a dork because all I did was offer the guy a tip which he declined - probably the only time in Vegas I will ever have a tip declined. Everyone else practically has signage telling you they are to be tipped. Whatever.

Of course my wife, who thought the whole 'trick' was a stupid idea in the first place, has now been proven right. To her credit though, she didn't say anything.

Our room was 16th floor and we had a view of the strip, which was nice. It was plenty large and the bed was excellent, so I'm not really sure what else I would have needed. Of course, nothing was free - $1 per local phone call, $15 for internet per day, $10 if you wanted a coffee (4 Keurigs for $10) but that is pretty standard for Vegas in my experience. I did call the Bell Desk a couple of times for information on various things and they were very helpful. We got checkout extended an hour without hassle as well. Overall I was pleased with the GN - not sure if we will stay downtown next time but I'm glad we gave it a try.

So you were bummed that it had grab bars, and wider doorways?

It had a shower equipped with a seat and a telephone shower at just above waist level - unless you wanted to sit in the shower, which I didn't, it was very difficult to use.

Bummer that it didn't work out for you this time. Maybe they are cracking down on it at the GN.

I'll be honest, I feel like a total ass when it doesn't work.

When it does work, I feel great though.

Typically, they don't accept it only because it looks like a bribe. But they still can probably accept a tip for good service.

So when your $20 is refused, I think the best way to respond is to keep the $20 out and say, "No problem, I understand. But if you provide me with good service, will be I allowed to tip you for it afterwards?" That might cause them to do what they can to help you, knowing that they still might get a tip (not a bribe) afterwards.

Yeah if I had been thinking on my feet I would have done that - looong day in airports, mind not much good at that point.

    Landry card

My advice to get an upgrade at the Gold Nugget is to get the Landry's card. It only cost $20, you get $20 on it right away to use at any Landry's restaurant, you get VIP check-in, you get to use the VIP lounge for snacks and drinks, and you get an upgrade if possible. To be eligible you are supposed to call in and book directly and mention that you have a Landry's card but it's worth trying even if you booked with a third party. The worst they can say is no. I've used it twice and it worked for the upgrade both times, once when we booked the rush tower direct, we were upgraded to a junior suite, and once when I booked the carson tower through expedia, we were upgraded to the gold tower (even though they aren't supposed to). It's worth a try and your'e not out anything if it doesn't work.

    Landry Card Upgrade . . .

I also agree with going for the Landry's Card . . . I myself have a Landry's card and it has worked for us every time. The 1st time using it (a stay during the week) we were upgraded from a Carson Tower to a Rush Tower Suite (but I asked specifically if they had any available and showed my card), another time the Rush Tower room and the last time a Gold Tower as well (only because the hotel was busy and we were told no Rush Tower rooms were available). For me it never seemed to make a difference whether I booked through them directly or 3rd party (sometimes we book through my husbands credit card points so the hotel is basically free for us anyways) and we still get upgraded. Other times we call and book through the hotel directly and book with the promotional deals and we still get upgraded (which I was told you are not suppose to). I guess we just have gotten lucky but the $20 you spend for the card you really can't go wrong!! It was an awesome investment for us!

Okay, you sold me. I just signed up online. Cost is $25.

Hopefully, the card will arrive before my upcoming trip.

Can the $25 welcome reward be used at the Golden Nugget at all?...

Do you get points for your hotel room bill?

This will sound nuts but I'm not sure how the points even work on the card to be honest. All I know is you pay $20 or $25 for the card and you get $25 back to use at your choice (Chart House Resturant at GN or another one is Rainforest Cafe at MGM + more) and during your birthday month they give you another $25 to use as well! The only reason I signed up was to take my chances when trying for the upgrade and we've definately gotten our money's worth out of the card!

However now I'm curious so I'm going to check it out . .. sorry I couldn't help you out with that though but good luck with your upgrade and enjoy your stay at the GN and in Vegas!

I used my welcome $25.00 at the Grotto two years ago. I used my birthday $25.00 at the Chart House last year. I intend to use my second $25.00 birthday award at the Chart House in about 5 weeks.

Had reservations at Golden Nugget for June 14-19. Saw the post and joined Landry's Select Club got the 25 loaded and will get 25 for June B-day. Called to give them my number, they said just provide at check in for upgrade if avail. Also gave them the offer code from Landry's website and got my overall Rush tower rate reduced by about 100 bucks total.
