I'm beginning to love Video Poker, and I'm trying to follow strategies to insure my wins. However, how do you determine if a machine is full pay? I ususally stick to Jacks or Better for my game. Any help is appreciated!

The pay table determines this. In almost all cases they fool around with the payout on the full house and flush and set them to either the maximum you'll ever see ('full pay') of something less. Each game has its own 'full-pay' numbers.

Jacks or Better: 9/6 (meaning 9 coins for a full house/6 for a flush)
    Bonus Poker: 8/5
    Double Bonus Poker: 10/7
    Double-Double Bonus Poker: 9/6
    Deuces Wild: 5/3

If you see these payouts you're playing at 99-100% return. But the vast majority of the time these payouts will be somewhat less, changing the returns down to something like 94-98%. But even with a 'bad' pay table, you are doing vastly better than almost all low limit slots.

FANTASTIC info, thank you! I've always felt like an idiot when reading the board. I had no idea what 9/6 JoB was! (my dirty mind had LOADs of ideas that don't include video poker, HAH)

JOB 9/6. I have read about 9/7 but have never seen it. This refers to the pay off on single coin full house and flush. Good luck! I am arriving on Wed.

Kay - Keep in mind too, if you're playing a bank of machines w/ a progressive jackpot that is getting up there and hasn't been won in a while, that higher payout on the RF starts to increase your expected return (ER) on any given game. So while you may be playing a Qtr 8/5 JOB game, if the pot is say $1,400...it starts to become a better game than a non-progressive 8/5 game.

Bottom line (for Dino anyway) is remember to play where you're comfortable, have fun and feel lucky. You can play high ER games all day but if you're playing at a casino you really get no vibe from just because they have "that" game...well, like I said, that doesn't work for me :rolleyes2:

Great advice from everyone. I always gamble with the following considerations in order of importance:

    1. I want to have fun
    2. I want it to be convenient to me and those I'm with
    3. I want good drink service (which helps with number 1, so sometimes this gets bumped up)
    4. I want to win, but depending on how well number 3 goes, this sometimes doesn't matter!

I'm down to just a little over 3 days when myself and my ENTIRE FAMILY (all my siblings, their kids, my now legal daughter and her friend, and a couple of my friends) invade the Mecca. If you see a crowd of 14 or so people who look kinda redneck and seem to be LOUD and oblivious to those around them, I suggest you run OR, if you enjoy a good time, JOIN US!

I went to the Horseshoe in Cleveland this past weekend and saw Jacks or Better with 8/6 pay out I have never seen that before and that was the best they had . I agree that one should go to vpFREE2:Video Poker , they even give locations of the machines in any casino you go to , good luck to all

    What is the Variance Factor?
The Variance Factor is most simply put the ratio of wins to losses in any given session of Video Poker.

How would the Variance factor affect me in my playing?
It all depends on how much time and money you are willing to invest if you choose to be an Advantage Player. You must realize with the infrequency of high jackpots, such as the "Royal Flush, Straight Flush, Four of a Kind", or other bonus hands for any given game, most playing sessions will be negative. So, you must be prepared to be in it for the long haul, and have the large bankroll necessary to handle the low spectrum of the Variance Curve.

    What is an Advantage Player?
An "Advantage Player" is someone that seeks out the best games with the lowest house advantage, and plays with as close to perfect basic strategy as is possible on any given game. Many Advantage Players will only play full pay Video Poker machines/games.

    What are "Full Pay" machines?
Full Pay video poker machines pay back at least 100% return with perfect play, or close to 100% with a casino promotion or progressive game with a high jackpot. Theoretically you should come out eventually with a profit.

How long would I have to play and how much will it cost me to eventually break even or show a profit?
That is the question. For instance, a royal flush occurs statistically once in every 40,250 hands. That's right, over forty thousand plays. Of course the smaller but still significant jackpots have a higher frequency, but the lowest of hands have the highest frequency of all.

So, you do the math. Google it. Don't take my word for it. I'm not some Video Poker Guru that will tell you that you can't lose. I'm not trying to sell you any books or Video Poker software. I'm just the average part time player but I do know the rules, the pay schedules, and perfect strategy because I have a basic strategy card if I don't have the perfect play for any given hand in that particular game committed to memory.

I play for entertainment and enjoyment. I have excellent money management skills. This comes with years of practice and patients, and an abundance of sheer will power. How did I get it? By having my ass kicked so many times I had to learn how to gamble or quit or go broke.

So, take from me, play within your means. Set a win goal and a loss limit. Always tip your waitress or bartender and those comped drinks will flow. You might even earn some comps along the way and you'll be happier in the long run. Trust Me!

#2 I feel is actually the hardest one to get for video poker when staying on the strip. If you are a $.25 player, I don't think there exists a good machine on the strip. Palms is pretty decent, but I'm not sure it is the most convenient. Quite a few places downtown have great VP options though.

My experience with drinks at slots/VP is that it may take a while for that first drink. After that if you are sitting on the same machine, it is very easy to get the 2nd, 3rd, ..10th...
