i just miss all the old school neon. thats how it was when i was a kid. i remember every casino billboard revolved around "jackpots" "loose slots" and "3:2" blackjack. Now its all about shows, nightclubs, and restaurants. barely revolves around gaming now

What do I miss in Las Vegas?

    One word: Stardust! :(

Some Boyd idiot who was at the time studying to be a moron decided it wasn't "hip" enough, so they replaced it with this huge vacant tract! :(

Ditto on the winning. It used to be we would always at least hit one hand pay on each trip. I haven't hit a hand-pay in Vegas since September of 2009 - so the last 3 trips.

I miss the lions at the MGM Grand.

I really miss the Sands. We used to stay in those rooms around the pool area. You escaped a Wisconsin winter and every morning you walked out to palm trees, green grass & flowers everywhere, right outside your room door.
I still remember the feeling that this is what a Vegas winter vacation should be like.

I also miss the Stardust and their Racebook and weird I know, but I miss the little shooting water fountains out front. I could sit outside with a beer and watch those things for a half hour.

Oh well, Thomas Wolfe was right.

Themed resorts. They've taken the uniqueness and turned it into corporate boring.

The Holy Cow. A great brewery right across the street from the Sahara.

The total lack of "beach clubs." These are money-makers, but I hate them so very much.

Commander's Palace for their "1880" fixed price lunch ($18.80) along with their $.25 martinis. That's right, you could get four martinis for $1 (limit 4).

    Two words: THE DRIVE

My first trip to Vegas in 2006, my uncle and I stayed at Sahara. We had heard about The Drive but there was very little info to be found online as it had just opened and they didn't seem to wanna actually tell you what it was on their website.

Being fans of cars and racing, we were pleasantly surprised to discover how fun and cheap it was, and only a five minute walk from the room. We killed a half hour every day with it and a couple on the last day we were there.

I have missed it every trip to Vegas since. I blame the terrible lack of marketing and info about what it actually was for its brief stay.

I've been saying that on all my trips in Las Vegas, I'm trying to find and re-live my feelings on my first trip.

    I never found it.

But I've had a great time looking for it! :)

That is like trying to capture the feelings from the few months weeks/months of the relationship with the wife/husband.

You can never capture it, but what you have are newer feelings not possible without the history from the earlier experiences. The same holds true with Vegas.

Caesars Palace before the renovations, when it was the unchallenged king of gambling. The turquoise glow at night, the Bacchanal, Palace Court, and the chicken noodle soup at Cafe Roma. Cuzzens, craps in the Olympic Casino, and when folks dressed to the nines when they went out.
