What route can I tell the taxi driver to take from airport to Mirage to avoid being long hauled?

    Thanks!

All I ever say from the airport is 'to the Mirage - No tunnel.'

If there's more for me to say, let me know guys....we'll be there Sunday!

LOL I agree, that is all that SHOULD have to be said. Although one time I was so long hauled it was ridiculous, ended up going down the Freeway, fare ended up being almost $40!! I was livid, but hubbie was just exhausted from travelling and ended up paying it, but not tipping. One of the bellman saw how pissed I was, rolled his eyes and asked if we were long hauled and shook his head. I wanted to get the driver's name and license number to report him, but hubbie just wanted it over and to check in and start the festivities. AND, to top it off, he dropped us off at the side entrance, which is no big deal, but when I first get to Vegas, I want to go in the front door and see all the action, if that makes any sense, lol..

I've been long hauled several times, and it always just leaves a bad taste in your mouth and that is not how I want to start this vacation. :peace:

Actually, one time I was staying at Bally's but had double booked The STRAT one night for some free play or something. At like 3 am, I decided I HAD to check out of the Strat of I was going to be charged or something. I know better now, lol. So I jumped in a cab. There was NO traffic out. This was probably a Sunday night. I was by myself. Cabbie wanted to go off strip and jump on Freeway. I was just like "um, no, straight shot up the Strip please". We were there in minutes, but it could have been way different had I not noticed what he wanted to do. But being by myself at that time, I wanted to just stay on the main strip, ya know?

I am also interested in how people share cabs. Do you just ask people around you in the cab line if they are going to the same place? I have stood in that line many times and have never had anyone ask.

If you happen to come into town on Fri or Sat night, taking the tunnel MIGHT be an option. After a long flight and leaning towards motion sickness, we went that way to avoid stop and go traffic. Worth a few more bucks in that case.

Definitely a nice reference sheet that I have used but I take it with a grain of Salt because apparently its cheaper to get to Imperial Palace than Flamingo, when the normal route would drop you off at Flamingo quicker..

Plus Mirage is cheaper to get to than Flamingo, which I dont see as possible.

    "Mirage, no strip, no tunnel"

Paradise to either Flamingo, left and then turn right on strip or Country Club, left and turn left on strip.

Lights and traffic on strip can make a ride up it as expensive as tunneling and I-15'ing

After you rent a car a few times, you learn to use paradise, koval and audrie as much as possible

I suppose that's one way to handle it.

The long-haul tab to the Strip is usually, what, an extra 10 bucks going through the tunnel and straight back? So simply not tipping the driver makes up for most of it, and I imagine it's a losing proposition for them when you do that.

Of course, some drivers apparently make an art of it: 40 bucks to the Mirage! Ouch! That should definitely be reported.

last time I was in vegas, a guy behind me asked which hotel i was going to, he was going to Harrahs so we split the fee... it only was like 15 bucks so I gave the driver a 20 and the guy gave me a 10 so it was a good deal and the driver was pretty good

Technically, you are right. You can't be long-hauled if you tell the cabbie to go the long way. If he ignores your tunnel request, and takes the surface streets, can you complain about being short-hauled? :confused2:

When they ask me which way I want to go, I answer something like "don't take me any way which will make me call the taxicab authority on you and have your license pulled."

    Seems to work :)

Thanks for the link. Even though it may not be 100% precise, at least it gives you a ballpark figure of what you should be paying in order to avoid being ripped off.

Good thread. I never heard of being "long hauled" before, and I'm heading out to the Mirage in a few weeks.

Is it legal to make a right hand turn on a red in Nevada? (In California it's legal) I had a cab driver sit and sit and sit at a red light in a right turn lane (right onto LV blvd leaving Aria) for nearly 5 min! He had so many openings to turn but he just sat until it turned green.

I was long-hauled to the Mirage this past Sunday. Granted, I didn't say "no tunnel" or give specific streets. But cab drivers are obligated to take you via the shortest route possible, unless they obtain permission, which this guy certainly did not. He didn't say a word.

Once we were on the interstate, I asked him why we were going this way. He babbled out some explanation about construction on the surface roads, which may or may not have been true. I have no way to know.

So I made him an offer -- I know the "standard" fare to Mirage should be around $14-16. I told him I'd give him a flat $20 when we got to the hotel. If that wasn't good enough, we'd call the Taxicab Authority and discuss it with them.

Not surprisingly, he accepted my offer. The meter read about $28 and change when we arrived.

OMG this happened to us too when we were going from the Mirage to Aria....pulling into the Aria drive the light was red but the way was clear. He just sat there. Remember in my TR, it cost us $15 just to go from the Mirage to the Aria....as much as an airport haul should cost. We got screwed big time. I hate cabs.
