The MGM is now charging $28 per day for resort fee (including tax). Are they having a laugh?

Just increase the room rate instead of going out of your way to make it look like you're ripping people off. Oh, hang on a minute...if it's not part of the room rate, what are the implications to the IRS? I bet it saves them money somehow.

Ugh. Glad we're staying on a comp in June. But their fees forced my brother and SIL to stay elsewhere out of principle. It sucks, but I don't blame them.

I honestly wouldn't mind if they just upped the room rate a bit.

And Harrah's still advertises that you can save up to $20 per day with NO Resort fees at their properties....Harrah's needs to stop counting their money and update their websites.

BTW we will never pay a resort fee.....it's just rip off, plain & simple.

Agreed. For whatever reason, a rate increase to cover the cost of x, y, and z amenities sounds a lot better than, "oh btw, we're going to charge you a daily fee for s*** you're probably not even going to use."

On Wednesday, we checked into one of the Stations casinos and I got to talk to the check in person.

He said that the resort fee was one of the biggest reasons that front desk people quit. It's so stressful for them that it now makes their job horrible. They have had meetings with upper management about it and were told, that's the way it is and it's not going away.

Let's not take it out on the desk person, it's not their fault.

Don't stay there if you don't like the resort fee!!!

I don't like paying $15 a day to use the internet, $25 per day to use the gym, and $2 per day for a newspaper at all the properties that don't have a resort fee. It's all relative people. The resort fee is not a surprise to anyone anymore. Figure it in to the room cost and then decide where you want to stay.

If you don't use the gym, pool, or internet, then the resort fee is a drag. If you do use those amenties, then you actually save money with the resort fee.

Bitching about the resort fee is silly. It's a part of life, and clearly a part of Las Vegas, as the majority of hotels now charge such a fee. If you don't like it, don't stay there.

Why wouldn't they charge the resort fee?? It allows them to charge you $28 per day that doesn't show up on the search engines, making their property appear to be cheaper than it is.

This will not stop until people get fed up and stay somewhere else. It HAS to cost them money or it will only get more prevalent.

    And breathe....

I'm not "bitching" about it, I'm bemused. I tell you what, let's remove all discussions from this discussion board. Would that be better suited to your internet usage?

That's my point. They are sneaking it on us rather than increasing the room charge. It's bad form.

Most of you know how I feel about this. Sure, it's chicken shit, but so is most any transaction in the free market. (That's one reason why I buy cars online, for instance.) It's also something I'd do if I owned the business.

People love to bitch about government intrusion, but isn't flight shopping a little bit easier with the mandate that taxes/fees be in the initial quote? Now should Big Brother tell hoteliers (car rental agencies, TicketMaster, GM, realtors, title/escrow, brokers, Amway, whomever) to cover it all in one single line-item cost shown in such bold print that it's visible from the moon?

If anyone active on this board or any travel-related board is surprised by these fees, then they're asleep at the switch. And do folks not travel anywhere else in their lives? This ain't just a Vegas thing.

I'm not condoning the practice, necessarily, but I'm also not exactly sweating bullets over what a free market does to induce/entice us. I'm just not. I know when I book a flight that some airlines charge for all bags, some charge for more than one, some don't charge at all. I just add it in to the cost. But what about that nasty, nefarious, hidden, unAmerican fee for overweight bags? Should United be required to hit me with a pop up before anything ensues saying brecky is 8.95 and lunch is 11.95?

It's just a nonstarter. Chicken shit but a nonstarter.

GREAT point by DonD. Complain with your feet, don't go ballistic on the front-line folks.

Just my 2cents... I absolutely hate the resort fee. But you can't go to any major city upscale or borderline nice hotel that does not have them. So what do I do, I make sure that whatever the resort fee includes, I use. Gym, Wifi, Paper, etc....

Yes its horse shyt but we always have 2 options, either pay it or dont stay there. Their is a reason why we have a tier structure. Your 1star hotels will not dare charge a resort fee. However, you're more upscale 4-5star hotels will. They know they have a market that will pay regardless of the price.

So with that said, enjoy life and enjoy vegas cause once you're gone resort fees wont even matter..!!!!!

Stay positive and "Take it in stride!" and life will be much more enjoyable.

Or as they say on the internets: Don't take your life or your wife too seriously.

:nworthy::nworthy: Funny thing is, even without resort fees, when I checked the CET propertys that were even close to the MGMs we stay at the CET rates were all higher without the fee. Never hear about that though. :evillaugh

I don't think anyone likes it, but often we have no choice. Resort fees have been commonn in florida for the past few years and yes, they suck. You can pay what you want, I wouldn't pay $15 to use the internet either. BTW, no,not all properties charge the prices you are quoting. I don't blame anyone who objects to paying them....:peace:

My post wasn't necessarily directed at you. I just get tired of reading thread after thread about resort fees. I think Ken summed it up perfectly.

People complain because the resort fee is a "hidden" charge. Do you not realize that hotels without resort fees have the same "hidden" charges. When you book a room at Caesar's or Planet Hollywood does the reservation agent remind you that you have to spend $15 a day if you want internent access, or $25 a day (per person) to use the gym?? Hell No! However, it clearly states anytime you book an MGM room on the internet that you have to pay a resort fee, and if you book over the phone the reservation agent reminds you of the resort fee.

Accordingly, people are much more aware of the resort fee than they are of the "hidden charges" at the hotels that don't charge a resort fee. Now you tell me which is more sinister??

    Here's my second bottom line:

Some folks will take a sword to take a sword. More power to them. I simply add it up, look at the price and see where the insidiously communistic fee-charging hotel stands versus the competition. If the first gives me a better experience and the value assessment so indicates, I'll take it, even if I have no plans to use the fee amenities. If the combined price is lower ...

As to the comment about $28 rooms in Vegas. Indeed. That's also why highway-side motels can be a Motel 6 or a Hyatt, and why folks can choose between Travelodge and Ritz-Carlton. Extrapolating: Kia or Mercedes. Taco Bell or Border Grill. Sizzler or Ruth's Chris. PBR or craft beer. Box wine or vintage varietal. Etc.
