the "How I got rich..sort of..." trip report

  1. MONDAY MORNING:

Got up at four, pack a few last minute items and wake up the family. We threw ourselves together and raced out the door, hoping to be at least an hour early for our six o' clock flight. As we waited in the airport, I think.."this has got to be the best way to start a monday ever..."

    Skip ahead four hours...

We are in Las Vegas by ten due to several delays and hang ups, but it was good to finally BE there. We rented a car (a green subaru outback for those who actually care) and drove to the hilton. Got an early check-in and ran up to our room so we could drop off our suitcases and run to see my sister (she lives in vegas by the way). As we walked through the hotel, I could see my son looking around.
"Where the heck is the star-trek thingy?" were his exact words, I believe...
After disapointing him further by informing him that we wouldn't be going on it tonight, we jumped in the subaru and headed to my sister's house.
She has an old blackjack table in her basement from who-knows-where (I always forget to ask her) so I taught my son how to play blackjack with some old poker-chips she had in her drawer.
I kid you not, within half-an-hour he had figured out, ON HIS OWN, a simple version of card-counting. I swear my son is a genius, I just have to be sure he's using it for the right purposes. Maybe I shouldn't have taught him to play blackjack afterall...

We spent the rest of the day at my sister's house, then headed back to the hotel at about 3:00. I think about now my son was bored to tears, poor guy.

To ease his suffering I took him into quark's to get a bite to eat and get him a large soda while my wife wandered off to find a baccarat table.

    TUESDAY:

We got up late, about ten, and got ourselves together enough to head down to the pool after a quick bout of room service. I'll tell you, their pool facility was fantastic!! We spent the entire day down there. No gambling that day.

    WEDNESDAY:

My sister and her fiance' met us at quark's and decided they wanted to go on the star-trek ride with us. I remebered somebody's reccomendation from this board, hoya's i think, to do the klingon ride first, so, we did just that. It was pretty cool, my son thought the whole "beaming up" thing was incredible.
My wife and son decide to do the borg ride alone, because I was getting motion sickness and was in the mood for a warp-core breach, so my sister and soon to be brother-in-law headed back down to quark's.
It was here I found out my sister's intended was a jerk.... After finishing a mini warp-core breach..

We met my son and wife at the promenade. My sister and fiance' took my son to shop around while me and the wife headed back to the room to grab something...we grabbed something allright.

When we came back down, we found my son sitting on a bench outside of a store bawling his eyes out. When we asked him what was wrong, he told us that my bro-in-law had left him there while they went to find us. He had been sitting there for 20 minutes! alone! He thought we had forgot about him, poor guy. How STUPID can you get! This is vegas, you don't leave a nine-year-old alone in a busy shopping center!
We comforted him and told him he could play video games all night if he wanted. That trick always works to cheer a kid up...
Not wanting to cause any tension before my sis's wedding, we simply adressed my bro in law (his name's jj) about the problem. He basically blew us off but told us it won't happen again. Yeah, because I'm never leaving my kid with you again...

    THURSDAY:

The wedding day. I don't want to talk about it.

    FRIDAY:

left my son at my sister's house (at least he's safe there, cause jj hadn't moved in yet...)

Me, wife and relatives head out to the alladin to gamble. Here's where it get's interesting...

I sat down at an empty blackjack table with 1,000 in blacks and greens. Two hours later, I've doubled my money and table is filling up. The dealer shuffles the dual deck and deals the person on first base (I'm at the end o' the table) a 5,3 the person next to him a 5,5 and the person next to him a 2,10, deals the next person an 8,3, and finally deals me a pair of aces. Dealer ace. Skip insurance. The count after it reaches me and everyone gets dealt some crappy stuff while i wait patiently on my aces is 6. My inital bet was 600.00 because I had a hunch. Now my hunch is looking like a crunch because I have to split, and if I lose the hand I'm down 1200. I split. I swear, two more aces. After dropping four hundred more on the table just so i can split (I'm now all in) I split both again. I get all face cards. I'm now staring at four hands, with four aces and four face cards with 2400 on the table. dealer hole is...6!!! I'm rich! Well, maybe not, but DAMN it felt good to win that much money at once. Thank god it wasn't a dealer blackjack...

    SATURDAY:

Feels like saturday don't matter after my huge win at the alladin. Go down to the pool. Do some more gambling and gain ANOTHER thousand at the hilton casino.

    SUNDAY:

Come home happy and depressed at the same time, knowing my next trip to vegas will be VERY soon.

Sweet. I'm going to print your trip report and rub it all over my body in hopes that your blackjack luck rubs off on me! [IMG]

I thought you ended up in Colorado or something instead of Vegas again? Congrats if they changed it back!

That was a different trip. But then kids, brides-to-be and jerks aren't usually in my travelling party. Heck of a run at the BJ table. (Sorry to hear about your new b-i-l.)

Snowball, was that at the Hilton that they let you re-split aces? I re-split aces at the Plaza two weeks ago and my luck went the other way. Love it when I hear good news from the tables. [IMG]

had to go back and read your earlier thread about 9 year olds in vegas. three days before he gets to go on the star trek ride must have seemed like forever, and getting abandoned like that... had to feel sorry for the kid, but it would be wrong to draw conclusions based only on what you have wrote so far. so what is your verdict, was a week too long, did he get by ok, never again, but because it was a family wedding kind of had to be done that way?

I can't believe he left your nine year old alone on a bench, he is lucky he lived to have a wedding. I won't even let my ten year old play alone in the front yard.

So, was that a 6:5 or 3:2 table? I'm trying to figure out exactly how much you won :D .

So, where was your sis when the future BIL left your son alone?

I thought for sure Elrushbo would have chimed in by now!

To answer your question, kitson, setting aside the whole leaving him on a bench thing, the trip was fine. We'll probably end up taking him out there again when we go visit my sis and jj. My BIL is still a jerk, but he's family now so we have to bare with it. It was a 3:2 table. I NEVER play at 6:5, and I won 2400, not including the 2400 i had out on the table. I got two blackjack's in a row at the hilton and ended up winning another 1,000. So my total winnings when we got home was 3400.
