    My Trip Report

Alright y’all it took me a while to get around to getting this out but here are the details of my first Vegas trip and our stay at the Hard Rock.

    Saturday Jan 8th-
Finally got off work around 7am and home by 730, hit the bed for a few hours sleep before leaving out. We had booked a flight on Allegiant that was leaving on Sunday. Since the Airport was 3 hours away, and the state was supposed to get a heavy snow storm we decided to head out and get a hotel room near the Airport for the night. Finally on the road around 4pm, and arrived in Springdale, AR around 730pm. Checked in, then decided to hit the Oklahoma state line for a little pre-Vegas action at Cherokee Casino. Played a few slots and was down about $100, until getting ready to walk out the door. Stuck $5 into a slot near the entrance and the second spin hit a payline for $124.00, cashed out and headed back to the hotel. Finally fell asleep around 3am.

    Sunday Jan 9th-
Up way too early 7am… restless and ready to get on the plane. Since the hotel we were staying at was smoke free, I went downstairs and grabbed a quick smoke outside. D@mn it was cold and was looking like it was going to start snowing soon. Now I started getting a little worried that if it started snowing the flight would be cancelled. Allegiant only flies out on Sundays and Thursdays so if the flight was canceled I would be out the money I spent on show tickets for Santana and Zumanity. Around 830 the wife wakes up, we grab a quick bit to eat and hit the road around 930. At the airport by 10 and check-in. Check in goes smoothly, security check point line was short and breezed right through. Get to the gate and it’s packed. Flight is due to leave at Noon, so the wife and I wonder through the gift shop for awhile then back to the gate. We had assigned seats so we were the second group to board. Non-assigned seats took forever and the flight leaves 10 minutes late. Flight goes smooth, the wife entertains herself with her Iphone camera and snapping pics out the window along the way, and friends start texting us pictures of all the snow we missed by 30 minutes. Smooth flight, and 3 hours later we are on the ground at LAS. We both hit the restrooms, I come out and wait and wait and wait… no wife to be seen. Try to call her on her phone, no answer.. walk around the area no wife. Finally she calls me back and she is in the gift shop… behind some guy she swears is Lou Ferrigno (we are still debating that to this day), we then hop the tram, grab the bags and get to the shuttle pick-up. Luckily one is about 5 minutes from leaving… bags on, we’re on and headed to the Hard Rock. The shuttle drivers drops us at the front, get to the reservation desk only to find out that we need to be on the other side of the property at the HRH tower check-in. Lug the bags through the casino looking like the first time tourist we are, and finally find the HRH tower area. Check-in and was told that they have a Pool view room available and was asked if that would be fine. Ask is the pool was open… still closed. Get to the room and the room looked great. Check the view… yep there’s a pool.. and not a soul around it but still had a great view of the North End of the Strip. Unpack, relax a few minutes and head down to get player’s cards. Get signed up.. new member freeplay and earn 175 points within 24hrs and get a few bottle of wine. Cool!!!!! The wife and I play a few slot.. rack up about 50 points but no decent wins. Back to the room.. grab the Santana tickets and time to eat. Decided on the Pink Taco… get seated easily. Looking over the menu, we decided to spit the app platter and an order of guacamole. The guacamole was outstanding, the app platter was decent. After dinner, we wander down to H&H tattoo since the wife wanted to get her first tattoo in Vegas. Browse through the artist portfolios.. decent work. Talk with the receptionist and get the “It all depends what you want and how long it takes†run around as far as pricing goes. Bad vibe sets in and we tell her we will check back in the morning when the artists are in. Debate on going back up and changing clothes for the concert… we opt to just head on in. Get inside the Joint and we both decide we are thirsty and need water. I go to the bar, and get a funny look from the bartender when I order water. Offered two choices bottled “Smart Water†or bottle “Plain Waterâ€, since I saw the “Smart Water†in the room for $8 a bottle, I opt for “Plain Waterâ€â€¦ ouch $5 a bottle and they were 8oz bottles. We get seated and I realize the seats looked a lot closer on the websites seating chart then they actually were. We are almost to the back…. Kicking myself for not spending the extra $20 a ticket to get closer. Seats are starting to fill up… and then some drunk woman behind us gets pissed off at a guy in her row and goes into a tirade of calling him every name imaginable. Santana opens up with “Black Magic Womanâ€, great groove, 80 year old couple next to us pull out earplugs and start complaining about the music being to loud. I’m thinking the entire time, “Come on, it’s a rock concert. Loud and Rock go together.†Drunk woman behind us is still cussing… old couple still complaining. Santana is rocking…. Then gets into this “Love and Lightâ€, one world, one people rant for about 20 minutes. The wife and I decide to call in quits and make our way out about 15 minutes before the end of the show. We decide that since we just paid $10 for two small bottles of water, that we might as well get a few free drinks on the casino floor. Park ourselves at some multi-denomination Top Dollar, CW comes by, the wife orders us two drinks. 20 minutes later…. No CW. Another CW comes by… I order a couple of drinks and tip $5 up front hoping to speedier service…. 20 more minute… Zilch!!!!! We call it a night and head back to the room and we are amazed at how comfortable the bed is!!!

    There has to be more

Any pool in Las Vegas in January if it is not heated it is either closed or really, really, really cold. Just about ALL pool maintenance is done during the winter months.

I speak from experience here. I KNOW how cold a pool in Las Vegas is in the winter.

November to February, stick to the HOT tubs.

The Joint is a great place for a concert.

Wake up around 8am… wife is still fast asleep. I figure I will let her sleep in and watch a little TV. Find the Vegas Tourism channel and start watching. See a commercial about Betty Paige Store at the Fashion Show Mall, and that they have a tattoo parlor inside it. Make a note, that we will have to check that out. The wife finally gets out of bed around 11am (note: This becomes the theme of the trip.. since the wife fell in love with the bed in the room). We head down to H&H Tattoo with the design of what my wife wanted to get. No artists are in yet.. but the receptionist quotes us “Somewhere around $375 or so.†Now, I am no stranger to tattoos and figure her quote was either way off… or they are just pricey because of the location. I tell the wife “Let’s wait a bit, and see if that’s what you really want to get.†and we catch HR’s shuttle to the strip. Just as luck would have it, the drop off is at the Fashion Show Mall. Bingo!!!!! Get inside the mall, and get hit up by every kiosk vender there. Wife gets a 25 minute demo of this Indian looking suri wrap dress…. And she decides against it. We find Betty Paige… wife browses the dresses, then back to the tattoo area. My wife shows the artist the design she wants… he quotes us $160… more like it!!!! 15 minutes later, she’s under the gun and getting inked. Tattoo takes about an hour. Cool guy, we BS about tattoos, music, Vegas and Arkansas. Tat gets finished, we walk through the mall for a bit.. then head out to the strip. I debate on walking across to the Venetian, but we decide to head South. We find TI and head inside. Look around for a bit.. play a few slots here and there… no nice wins, down about $40. Then I find the Deal or No Deal. Burn a couple of $20’s in one, move to another and it starts paying better. Get a bonus round or two and get up about $80. Cash out and I’m only about $20 down including the slots at HR the night before. We start walking South and that was when I realized just what everyone meant about “it’s a lot further than it looks.â€!!!!! We make it down to the Bellagio and decide to catch a cab back to HR, stop by the promotion desk and get our free bottle of wine and a free 12-pack of Cokes (wife’s choice). Get back to the room, rest up and we start getting ready for the night out and we have tickets to Zumanity. I had caught a promotion deal online for buy one get one for $7, so I had great seats but hadn’t told the wife yet just how good. Around 700 we cab it to NYNY and start off by playing a few slots. Down about $60 real fast… then I found a Mummy Returns machine, started playing and starting hitting. Get up about $180.. Cash out and we head to dinner. We decide on Gonzalez Y Gonzalez…. Great food. The NCAA championship game was on and everyone was either groaning or cheering! Finish dinner and head to the show. We get inside and get seat and the seats were great.. we were three rows from the stage! Show starts and it was fantastic….and the wife and I agreed that we would definitely see it again! A few more slots.. debate on giving craps a try, but decide that I will wait until the morning. Cab it back to HR, a few more slots, and back in the room and back in that wonderfully comfortable bed!!!! Now I’m about $40 up for the trip.

Up again around 830am… starting to wonder what is it about Vegas and not being able to sleep. Wife is still sleeping… and I know I better not even try to wake her. Shower, dress and hit the casino floor. A couple of $20’s into the slot… nothing! Head down to the tables… now before the trip I had decided that Vegas was going to be where I learn to play Craps. I had played a little 3 Card Poker before and a few hands of Blackjack, but never Craps. Summon my nerve, and the Craps table is empty. I figure this would be a good time to start. So I buy in for a big whooping $40 and tell the dealers that I have never played. They push me my few chips and get me started. A $5 pass line bet, pick my two dice, shake’em and throw. It’s a 7… winner, winner chicken dinner!!!!!! Another $5 pass line… another 7!!!! Okay this is cool. Another $5 pass line.. dice go flying off the table. I was glad I was the only one there!!!!! Dealer tells me not to sweat it, that it happens. Roll em again and set the point at 8. Three rolls later make the point.. now I getting more chips!!!! I’m liking this game!!! Another throw, and 9. Feeling confident, make a 1X odds bet. Two rolls later.. there the 9. Goes like that for few more rolls.. darn 7 out. Next 20 minutes or so I build more and more courage… start placing the 6 and 8… a few bets for the dealers. I’m winning, the dealers are winning… we are having a good time. The start showing me how to press and I start getting some green chips back. Then I 7’d out back to back. Decided I had a good lesson, and better color up. $240 back….. Wow I just made $200!!!! Walking to the cage I had stopped at the roulette table to bet $5 for a friend back home on his lucky number/#29. Another friend had told me to always bet #24 and #36. So $5 on 29, $5 on 36, decided against #24 and $10 on black. Would you know it #24 hit, well at least I broke even. Get back to the room and the wife is still in bed but awake… Tell her my first Craps adventure, she gets dressed and we head to the strip again. Dropped back off at the Fashion Show Mall and we catch the Duece bus down to the other end of the strip. The wife wanted to check of the Coca-Cola and M&M Store so we wander through there for a while. Then it was off to Ross’s, where I picked up a fleece pull over since it was a little chilly that day. Now I swear the wife has a PhD in shopping , so I headed to the MGM. Found the craps tables and they were all busy. Finally a spot opened up and I bought in for $100. Got down to $20 and pulled out another $100. Table was pretty cold and ended up leaving after I got down another $80. The wife finally made it over to the MGM… and now I wasn’t feeling so lucky at Craps… we played a few slots then headed over to the Tropicana. Made it as far as the line of the player’s club then the wife said she had a bad feeling about the place and wanted to leave. We were getting hungry, so we walked across the street and ended up at the Excalibur. I had left my MGM card somewhere the previous night, so I hit the players club desk and found out Mlife had rolled out that day. While getting my Mlife card the lady told me I had comps that were going to expire in two days and asked where and how long we were staying. I told her that we were at the Hard Rock and leaving Thursday. She then asked if I would liked to be comped dinner. I didn’t know what restaurants they had so opted for the buffet. Mistake!!!!!! The worse I have ever had!!!! We hit the casino for a little, but the slots seemed tight. After going thru about $100 we decided to head Downtown. Caught the bus, and got downtown right at dusk. Hit up Freemont and found one of my favorite machines, Millionaire 7’s. Hit a few bonus rounds but nothing great….. Ending up dropping about $200 downtown venturing from casino to casino. Caught the bus back to the Strip and cabbed it back to HR from PHo. Got back to the room, then decided I needed to play some 3 Card Poker. Found an open table and bought in for $100. Table was pretty cold, I think I played about 20 hands all together, only because I was able to hit a couple of flushes along the way. Left the table with $20 in chips and hit the craps table, bought in another $100… and table was cold, cold, cold. Finally called it a night somewhere around 3am and off to that nice comfy bed.

Wednesday Jan 12-Thurday Jan 13--- It was one long day!!!!!!
It’s 930 and I am awake again… figure I wasn’t supposed to sleep more than 4 or 5 hours at a time in Vegas. Actually get the wife out of bed early by using the lure “If you want to go to the Outlet Mall we need to get up there soon. Shuttle to the Mall, cross the street and catch the bus. Get to the mall a little after 1pm. We must have hit every store there. The wife’s buys of the day a Coach purse and matching wallet for $145. Mine, Brooks Brothers and Calvin Cline shirts!!!!!! I think we finally get done shopping somewhere around 830 pm. Catch the bus, and head back towards the strip. At the stop Freemont, two couples for Texas get on….. drunk and funny. We are cutting up back and forth with them. Drunk Texans are always funny!!! At The STRAT … a pirate gets on. I figured he was working at TI. So the drunk Texans are freaking out, one of the ladies ask him where he was from and he yells out “My Mamma’s $@!&* (okay let’s just say it rhymes with wussy). Her jaw hits the floor until she realizes he has a live parrot on his shoulder. Then she becomes fascinated and wants to pet his bird. So about the time, her husband is figuring out they are flirting with each other, we are at TI and drunk husband sees Gilley’s and now he isn’t worried about the flirting , he’s ready to ride the bull. So the pirate and Texans exit, happy as can be. We get off at the Cosmopolitan stop finally get across the street and catch a cab from PHO back to the HR. Get all the bags from shopping in the room and decide to play a little more since it’s our last night. Get downstairs and hit the slots. Find one of the slots I had been playing off and on since we had been there….. can’t remember the name of it.. but I think it is Jackpot Sevens. Anyways the bonus games is when you get the three bonus symbols on the three center reels, the video screen on top activates and has a series of triple 7’s going up… you have to match the color of the seven’s and each time you move up one row. So I stick in $40, get down to $20 or so, win back $30, down $45 and it goes like this for about 20 minutes.. I hadn’t been playing the max bet and finally get down to $12 in the machine… I decide to max bet till it’s gone. I start hitting and hitting and hitting and get up to $80… then I hit a bonus game and start matching sevens… keep moving up… and up and I hit the second to last which is $525.00. Now it’s spinning for the jackpot which is $8500+ and have to hit three red sevens and I have 4 spins to do it in… first two spins, no red. Third spin… Red, Red, blue. Forth spin… Red, Red, Yellow. Dang so close… but cashed out with $675… which was exactly what I was down for then entire trip. We call it a night, and head back up to the room. It’s now 2am, our flight leaves at 7 and figure we need to be to the airport by 5. I get to the room and realize there is no way I am going to fall asleep anytime soon…. Tuck the wife into bed and head back downstairs. Buy in at the Craps table with $200. It was choppy and get down to $50. Decide to call it quits and head back upstairs, watch a little TV get the wife up around 4am and head to the check out. Check out and the clerk says that we would have plenty of time to get to the airport if we left by 4:50 so we hit the slots. I venture into the high limit area…. Stick a $20 into a five line $1 machine and two spins in hit for $135… play $35 back and cash out for $100. Now I am leaving Vegas totally even with what I came with!!!!!!! Take a cab to the airport, check the bags with the Skycab and find a place to smoke a cigarette…wife is calling her Dad about my $675 win and I realize…. It don’t have the car keys in my pocket.. then I can’t remember if I packed them or not and remember seeing them last on the desk in the room. Tell the wife. I figure it may be easier and faster to catch a cab back and try to check the room. We get a hold a the guy from the Skycab and tell him what’s going on. He suggests we call the HR as he goes and get’s our bags back. Call the HR.. transferred to Security..explain to them. They are going to check the room, Skycab is getting our bags and I we are in hold mode. Well about the time our bags get back, Security says the don’t see any car keys in the room. Check the first bag.. nothing.. second…nothing and finally find them in the third. Thank the Skycab guy and tip him a $20 for the trouble (figured a locksmith and cutting new keys would run a lot more than that.) Through security just fine.. make it to the gate in plenty of time… to include stopping at the Top Dollar and playing another $40 each. Flight leaves on time and all the seats are filled. We land in Arkansas a just before noon and there is still snow on the ground and it’s still bitter cold. Decide it’s lunch back at the Cherokee Casino just across the state line and a few more slots!!!! First time in Vegas was a blast and have already booked a room at PHo for the end of June.

Just thought I would add a couple more things concerning the Hard Rock. Beside the crappy cocktail service the one night... The service there was outstanding. The only meal we paid for was that meal at the Pink Taco on Sunday night... every meal after that was comped with vouchers from the players club kiosk. All the staff was friendly and went out of their way for us. However the casino itself was pretty much empty. The only time I ever saw the table in the new HRH tower manned were the first night we were there and they were closed by the time the Santana concert was over with. In the time we were there I earned 3000 points on my players card, and besides a follow-up survey about our stay, we have not seen one email offer, neverless a mailer. I called the players club the other day and checked for any offers and was told I might see something in late April or May. Would I stay at the Hard Rock again..yes I would. Will I, probably not.

I've been known to jump in the middle of winter too... coldest water I've been in was 43 degrees, just because my buddies jumped in the night before when the water was 45 degrees. Needless to say we had a lot of anti-freeze in us both night!!!!!!!

    Thanks for the TR:peace:

You did well for your first trip: saw a lot, hit the craps table, won a bit. Don't know that I could stay at the outlet mall that long though:rolleyes2:

    I can't sleep in Vegas either, I think it's a common affliction.

Sounds like you had a good time. I also like to craps. There is nothing better than being involved with a hot roll. The chips keep flowing in. Cold rolls are another story. Enjoyed reading your report. Good luck on your next trip!

Thanks everyone for the great comments!!!!!! The first Vegas trip I am going to count as a learning experience. We both had a blast, but there were a few lessons learned. The most important being logistics. There was a lot of stuff on my bucket list that we just ran out of time to do. Mainly because of the time it took to get from the HR to the strip by shuttle. Since we are staying on the strip on the next trip out, it should help out some.

Getting around!!!!! "You'll do some walking" is an understatement. Just crossing the street can be a major task sometimes. Comfortable shoes are a must... and I mean comfortable. I had some Sketchers with me and they held up fine, but I am sure glad I didn't try to wear my cowboy boots!!!!

The negatives!!!! The only negative, and I really can't call it a negative is the "porn slappers". It only really bothered me... when they were lined up 7 deep, two feet apart and every one of them is reaching towards you. We did see several homeless hanging out of the skywalks... but they never approached or panhandled like I have seen them do elsewhere.

Eating in Vegas!!! We didn't do as much as I had thought we would or even planned to. A co-worker had gone to Vegas a month before me, and when I asked him where all they ate at... he told me that they didn't eat that much. After being in Vegas I understand what he meant. Most of the time it was grabbing a bite at Mr. Lucky's before or after getting back from the Strip. Although my wife did make the mistake of getting a Nathans Hot Dog at Mermaids downtown... she got sick later.

Craps!!!!! Has became my new favorite game!!!!!!! I wish I had known more when I was there. But I do know more about it now so the next trip out is going to be a blast on the tables!!!!!

My Bucket List for the next trip:
    Bellagio Fountains
    Coaster at NYNY
    Sirens at TI
    Zumanity and KA
    Ceasars
    Cosmo
Get on a Hot Craps Table!!!!!!
    Premium Outlet (Brooks Brothers)

    a first time craps player!

    Thanks for the report.

Why wasn't I there? You HAVE to always bet on them, ALWAYS!!

There is such a thing as beginner's luck. My first craps experience I won huge and had absolutely, positively no idea what I was doing.

LOL, about the walking thing. Every casino just looks so close and it is actually one mile away.

Bellagio fountains, I want to recommend that you get a reservation at the Eiffel Tower Restaurant at 60 minutes before sundown. Ask for a window table. A very enjoyable view.

Coaster, do it on a NEW moon night and be in the front row. Look for coupons for the coaster ride. HINT, follow the coaster tracks up on the ceiling to help locate the roller coaster. Also, you MUST head upstairs.

KA yes. Not cheap. Good show.

Great report. Staying on the strip is much better than off I think but you may want to try staying on freemont street sometime, its awesome.

Great report! I was at Santana the night before you and thankfully didn't have any crabby people around me. I was surprised by the generosity of the HR players club. I only played about an hour on Santana night but I had to go back the next morning to play off all the free play they gave me :) But, due to location I don't know that I will hurry back plus I am not exactly their target demographic.

I also found that I didn't eat nearly as often as I expected to on my trip. I am planning to do less gambling :rolleyes2: and more dining on my next trip, but we'll see. FWIW, I loved both KA and Love and would highly recommend either or both of them for your next trip.

Great trip report. We enjoyed the HR in 2005. We had a couple of good-sized wins. Next trip was two hotels, GN and MB. We wanted the flavor of downtown. We loved it. We drive to LV, so we don't have the long distance walking to the off-strip properties. You'll love staying on the strip.

Nice report. Have stayed both on the strip and downtown. I like the strip for so many choices, but liked the downtown vibe. Your next trip will be just as great. Vegas just never gets old!!
