    My Trip Report

    Vegas 2011 Super Bowl weekend

Super Bowl weekend in Vegas, is there anything better? Not if you love football, gambling, drinking and waking up with a vague remembrance of the prior nights events. Fortunately I have a very healthy appetite for the first three and a passing acquaintance with the latter, but most importantly I have a wife who not only tolerates these passions and behaviors but encourages them (yes guys, it happens). With that in mind, I present to you the Beth and Kevin 2011 superbowl weekend in Vegas, from what we can piece together through the glorious haze of too many Blue Moon beers and vodka cranberries, all in the pursuit of the elusive Royal Flush and sophomoric fun. I hope you enjoy.

    Friday: Arrive and Survive

Leave BDL at 2, non-stop for the next 5.5 hours. Brutal. I don’t care what you’re doing, 5.5 hours is too long to do it (you can see why work can be a challenge for me). Regardless, I throw on the headphones and the wife makes a new friend. Eleanor is a very friendly, older woman who LOVES to talk. My wife is a very approachable and kind person and carries on a conversation with Eleanor the ENTIRE trip. I take off my headphones at various points and hear various bits of conversation, including how Eleanor had won 50k once at Foxwoods only to anger her husband, who didn’t want the tax burden (she clearly came from money). Anyway, at one point, my wife gets up to go to the bathroom and Eleanor reaches over and grabs my hand and tells me I have a wonderful wife. I quickly agree. But then Eleanor pauses, tilts her head back, and really looks at me, like she’s looking into my soul. “And I can tell you’re a sweet, good man†to which I responded, in my best Jim Halprin deadpan voice, “no I’m not.†“Oh no, you are, I can tell. You’re too modest!†Thankfully the wife comes back at this point so I’m off the hook. Regardless, Eleanor was a very nice, old fashioned woman, very genteel, and full of life. When I asked Beth after we landed if she minded the constant conversation she said no, Eleanor reminded her of her mom, and if her mom were flying alone she would want someone to be nice to her. I think Eleanor was right, my wife really is a good person. The jury’s still out on me.

We get to Dollar, pick up a Ford Fusion, hit Lee’s super liquors and then on to Caesars! Naturally at check in we ask if the building is pager friendly. The check-in person laughs because she knows this is supposed to be funny and said she had actually never seen the movie until a month or so ago so she never got the jokes (that every jerk, like me, must repeat ad nauseam). A little light banter and we’re off to the Augustus Tower, Room 2962.

Me checking if the hotel is pager friendly. http://s1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd372/2267baegan/?action=view&current=vegasfeb2011060.jpg

The room is nice, standard fair. King bed, big bathroom with a tub and a t.v, and a great view of the Bellagio fountains from the bedroom. Although having the view of the fountains was nice, without the music the power of the fountains loses a little something. IMO, a view is generally over rated in LV anyway as most nights I vaguely remember coming back to the room and most mornings I’m out as soon as I can get up. Regardless, it is a nice view and I should just shut up and be thankful we have it. We spend a few minutes sucking down a few Corona lights, tip the bellman a fiver, and hit the Casino. There is little more enjoyable than walking onto the casino floor, beer in hand, and knowing you’re whole trip is ahead of you. We head over to the Sport Book bar and see our favorite bartender, Anthony.

What makes Anthony our favorite bartender? It’s probably just the fact that he’s a good guy with a great sense of humor and always remembers us when we come back (twice a year at most). He’s like a large Italian rain man but with a better personality. Anyway, we have a few more beers (Blue Moon on tap…Mmmm) and when Anthony heads to break we head over to the Paris and the Burger Brasserie. It’s become a bit of a tradition for us to start off our trip at the BB and it’s always hard to do; we know we have to eat but it’s so hard to pull ourselves away from the casino that first night. Regardless, we congratulate ourselves on acting like adults and eat, BE having the American burger and I having the Salmon burger. I’m not a big fan of salmon but doctor’s orders two days prior were to lose weight. This would be one of two small concessions I would make during our trip, in contrast to the 300 Blue Moon’s I must have drunk. Buy hey, at least I could tell myself I was trying. Sort of. (Note to self: avoid having a physical exam 2 days prior to Vegas in the future. Best of advice of medical professionals is not consistent with a lifestyle based on little sleep and massive alcohol intake.)

We finish up at the BB and hit Gustave’s bar for some post dinner gambling and libation. The energy here was pretty low, however, so we only stay for an hour or so before heading back to Caesars. The energy at Caesar’s, by contrast, was pretty high, maybe due to an all out effort to attract patrons for the Asian New Year. We settle in at the VP games in the Palace casino, the one’s that run parallel with the hallway that takes you to Cleopatra’s barge. There is also conveniently a restroom right there and the cocktail service here is pretty steady. We stay for a few hours before we both look at each other and say enough’s enough. We head to bed too tired and inebriated to tally up the wins or losses. Goodnight Vegas!

Day Two: How lucky can one gal be….?

We awake and account for all our possessions. Amazingly I am up $400 and BE is up $100, not a bad start! For whatever reason I am feeling a little under the weather this morning and in need of some eye drops and saline spray. Must be the weather out here, probably nothing to do with my effort to deplete Las Vegas of its Blue Moon inventory the night before….. So we walk over to the Bellagio and walk through the conservatory which is decorated for the Chinese New Year, which happens to be the year of the Rabbit. Year of the Rabbit? My wife and I have had rabbits for years, ever since we got married 16 years ago. Our current rabbit is Franky (named after Frank Sinatra because he has blue eyes.) Is this an omen? Anyway, after the conservatory (beautiful), we hit the tram to the Monte Carlo and then to the CVS. Very impressed with the Monte Carlo, by the way; they’ve put some effort into the place and it looked good.

After CVS we head to the Cosmo, very excited because we’ve heard great things about this place. To be honest, I wasn’t overly impressed. It really just looked like an extension of the Aria, although a little brighter. It did have an upscale vibe but it just didn’t hook me. Anyway, we go to the player’s booth to get cards and the wife asks if we can get an upgrade based on us being Diamond at CET. The woman issues us gold cards and calls over a host. The host was a very young woman whose immediate attributes would get the attention of any red blooded male. To be honest, I’m still not sure she had a face. She hands me her card and what she says afterwards is of some debate between the wife and I. Beth thinks the woman says “Give me a call next time you’re in town if you’d like to stay.†I could have sworn she said “Give me a call next time you’re in town if you’re alone and would like to stay with me.†Probably just my imagination…. We walk around the Cosmo but we just weren’t feeling it here. To be fair we were still a little low energy and will certainly give it another shot next time in town.

After the Cosmo we both are in need of some nourishment so we head up to StripBurger to use a coupon the wife had from Restaurant.com. It’s a pretty good walk so we both built up a strong thirst by the time we got there. I ordered a Skip and Go Naked (beer and Absolute Citron) and the wife had a bourbon milkshake. My drink was a little sweet for me but the Bourbon milkshake was AWESOME! I could have drank 3 of these, damn doctor! It’s also here I make my second concession to my health and get a California chicken sandwich with guacamole, which was pretty good. The wifey had a chicken salad, which was not great. The only real knock on the place is that they play really loud club music. It got old pretty quick for us 44 year olds, I think it will prevent us from going back in the future, although I might make an exception for a milkshake.

    BE with yummy milkshake. http://s1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd372/2267baegan/?action=view&current=vegasfeb2011013.jpg

Anyway, back to Caesars and time to earn our keep. We’re sitting in the VP section of the Palace casino and playing for a while when the wife leans over and tells me she just hit 4 2’s with a kicker for $800! Great! I’d been plodding along, not really up or down, and 2 minutes later the wife leans over again and tells me she hit 4 Aces with a kicker for $2000! What? AWESOME! She starts telling me it’s because it’s the year of the Frank (our rabbit) and how could I argue? Literally, this happened in 2 minutes. The slot attendant comes over and pulls the player’s card and says “Who’s Kevin?†The wife and I play on one card to maximize tier points and since clearly my wife is not Kevin the slot attendant will only pay me. I sign the slip and get a 2k hand pay. The wife cashes out 1k, we tip the attendant 40 bucks and we head over to the Sportbook bar to celebrate with some champagne.

We’re at the sportsbook hanging with Anthony for about 30 minutes, the wife drinking champagne and me still on the Blue Moons, when then wife leans over to me and shows me she was just dealt a Royal Straight, 4 hearts with the Ace of diamonds. She’s playing Double Double Bonus at the dollar level so the payout was $40. We both know there’s no way she’s going to hold the straight so she lets the Ace of Diamonds go…..ONLY TO HAVE IT REPLACED BY THE ACE OF HEARTS! A Royal Flush for 4K! This is absolutely unreal! We switch seats to make the transaction less complicated and I sign my second w2g in half an hour. Year of the Frank! I joke around with the slot attendant and tell him not to take a break, we weren’t done yet! He laughs and I tip him a hundred and the wife tips the boys at the bar a hundred as well.
    http://s1216.photobucket.com/albums/dd372/2267baegan/?action=view&current=vegasfeb2011018.jpg

Wow, this is turning into a crazy night! The wife has just won 7k in the last half hour. The beers and champagne are flowing, we’re having a great time talking to the people at the bar and life is just as it should be. Who could ask for more? I’ll tell you who could ask for more, my wife! 15 minutes after she hits the Royal she leans over to me once again and says, in an exasperated voice, “swap seats, I just hit 4 Aces with a kicker for another 2k!†We switch seats, the same slot attendant comes back, and I sign my third slip of the hour. I tell him he can take a break now, but we’ll be back! Absolutely the greatest hour, the greatest night, of gambling we’ve been a part of, and the wife and I are beyond happy.

Sorry, no pic of the second 4 Aces w/ kicker… (BE)

So how would any classy couple celebrate? Why yes, the Earl of Sandwich over at the P Ho. Nothing but the best for my moneymaker! Seriously, this place is awesome, fantastic sandwiches that are the perfect antidote to the gallon of Blue Moon coursing through my body. I get the Hawaiian, the wife the meatball and we talk about the past hour. We’re both still pretty giddy and we decide to head over to the Bellagio. While there we notice there’s no line for the Fontana Bar so we get seated outside to watch the fountain shows. We grab a seat and order a bottle of champagne (Mum) to celebrate. The waitress can’t open the bottle because the cork is in so tight so I have to help her out. I think briefly about shaking the bottle and showering everybody like we’d just won the World Series but think that may end our time at the Fontana bar. Anyway, we’re waiting for the show to start and nothing seems to be happening. I ask the waitress if the shows had been cancelled due to the wind and she informs us they had. A little bummed, I jokingly told BE I’d go talk to the manager and let them know we had Beth9k here and she wanted to see a show. Right after I said that the fountain show miraculously started (Time to Say Goodbye and then Beef) so we watched, sipped our bubbly, and enjoyed the perfect ending to an unforgettable day.

View of fountains from Fontana Bar. Diane Diaz was performing too. Great venue. Too bad it’s closing..

Sunday: Big Game Day….Chilled and Naked!

We awaken and count our money to make sure we didn’t drunkenly put 9k on Red or something crazy like that the night before as we headed to bed. Nope, the cash is all there! We slept in a bit today so it’s almost time for the Caesars big game party. I love football and can’t wait to get the game started. As we enter the ball room area we are greeted by cheerleaders and throngs of people making their way to one of the many ballrooms hosting parties. We stop by the betting booth (the one in the casino had a line that would take an hour to get through) and decided I was sticking with my gut feeling that Green Bay would cover and the total would be over 45.5. I parlayed this for $200 and then wife took a flier that there would be 3 interceptions (+200) for $50. The ballrooms were set up by how big a player you were, the closer rooms were for the heavy hitters, the further the rooms reserved for the smaller players. Anyway, we’re walking in and there is a betting booth for people betting a minimum of 5k and the line is 20 people deep. I look down at my $200 bet and realize why we’re in the last ballroom!

The ballroom we’re in (Augustus, I think) is enormous. There must have been 150 tables seating 8 people, with big screen tv’s everywhere. It’s still early so we find a table and avail ourselves to the complimentary Coors lights, grab some food, and wait for the big game. We’re joined by a few people who were nice enough but kind of mellow. We watch the first half, drinking a bucket of Coors lights, stuffing ourselves on tailgate grub, and decide we’d walk around to check out the vibe in the sportsbooks (it was surprisingly relaxed in the ballroom). We walked through Caesars (packed with people) and then over to the Paris. We watch in the Paris sportsbook for a while (not very crowded) and then head over to Bally’s. We don’t actually make it to the Bally’s sportsbook as the game is winding down so we head over to the bar (the one you would see as you walk in from the Paris). They have a decent crowd so we jump in, grab a beer, and watch as Pittsburgh gets the ball back for the final drive.

At this point the Steelers are only down 6 so a touchdown would sink my bet. I move over to the tv by the poker area to better see and am met by a shorter, balding gentleman who looks remarkably like the actor Paul Giamatti (of “Sideways†fame). Anyway, it’s not him but there is a striking resemblance. He introduces himself as Ronnie and tells me he’s got Green Bay. Or more accurately, he tells me “I’M, RONNIE. I’VE GOT GREEN BAY.†It’s not as if he was shouting but he did speak with a certain purpose and enthusiasm. We watch as Big Ben throws an incompletion to end the game and Ronnie, BE, and myself exchange high fives ($500 win on the parlay!). “LET’S DO A SHOT, ON ME!†says Ronnie. Never one to refuse the kindness of a new friend, I readily agree, although knowing the volume of beer already imbibed I can’t do the shot game for long. The next thing I hear is Ronnie, “DANNY, DANNY, TWO GOOSE. CHILLED AND NAKED!†“DANNY. TWO GOOSE….CHILLED …AND NAKED!†The bartender, whose name tag clearly identifies him as James, looks over and gives Ronnie a nod. Apparently Ronnie had been down the night before and made quite an impression, as “Danny†had the shots in a second. As the bartender brings the shots over I see that the reason Ronnie is calling him Danny is that the bartender is wearing a Dan Marino jersey, and thus, to Ronnie, James is now “Dannyâ€. I explain this to the wife and we’re both laughing.

We do the shots and Ronnie orders a second round, even more emphatically, if that’s possible. “DANNY, DANNY, 2 GOOSE. CHILLED AND NAKED!†This guy’s an absolute character but I beg off the shot and instead offer to buy him one and myself a Coors light. As the wife has managed to jump on one of the video poker games, “Danny†comps our drinks. We chat a while and it turns out Ronnie’s a big Jets fan which, to a Patriot’s fan like myself, in heresy. Regardless, Ronnie insists that we go to the Superbowl next year to watch the Jets win the big one. To ensure we stay in touch he writes his number on the only thing he has to write on, a folded $2 bill. Ronnie, if you read this and the Jets make it, expect my call. We’ll do a few “GOOSE….CHILLED AND NAKED†in Indianapolis!

We thank Ronnie for his company but are feeling a little over lubricated and in need some nourishment. We head back to Caesars and hit the Slice Bar for some Pizza and a little video poker. I’m feeling like something a little different so I ask the bartender to make me a black and tan, using Guinness and Coors light. Tasty actually. We have a few of these and hit the sportsbook bar for the evening, where we played, uneventfully, until we dragged ourselves to bed, with both of us laughing out loud as we took turns yelling to each other in our best Ronnie voice, “DANNY..DANNY…2 GOOSE….CHILLED AND NAKED!â€

    Monday: Beats being at Work

I wake up Monday morning and notice the wife isn’t in the room. As I get up I notice the bathroom door is closed, so I knock. My wife answers, wearing a bathrobe and slippers, drinking a coffee, with the tub full and the tv on and one of the wing chairs from the bedroom dragged into the bathroom. She answers, “May I help you?†She’s created her own little mini suite out of the bathroom and really made herself at home. I called it her “Ultra Lounge†and realized she’d been doing this the past few days to let me sleep. I’ve got to tell you, it was pretty cozy! Anyway, I talked her out of leaving her lounge and we headed over to the Hash House at Imperial Palace (another Restaurant.com coupon). I am absolutely low energy from the past three days so a good breakfast sounds like a good idea.

If you’re going to the hash house go hungry. The food is big and plentiful, and not short on calories. I had fresh squeezed OJ, a farm scramble (eggs, cheese, spinach all scramble up) and the wife had some crazy hash dish. Tasty but too much food really. Verdict: We would both return but it wouldn’t be a must stop.

After the HH we walked down to the Paris. It was getting pretty warm and I was glad I was wearing shorts and a golf shirt, felt good after the 3 feet of snow and 10 degree temps back home. We ended up at Gustave’s bar, one of our favorite places. I order a bloody Mary, the wife gets a mudslide. We hang out playing casually, probably more down than up, but having a good time and enjoying the atmosphere. There’s a bartender there, an older gentleman (not much older than me, really, maybe 50 or so) whose company we enjoy. I always try to remember to get his name and I never do, but he’s a funny guy with a sarcastic wit and he makes us laugh. We discuss the state of Las Vegas in general, including the continuing unemployment and housing issues. I like to get the take of things from the bartenders (as these are the locals I’m spending all my time with) and there seems to be a sense that things are getting better but it isn’t happening quickly. Anecdotally, I didn’t think there were really a lot of people in Vegas , or not as many as I had thought there should be given that it was SB weekend, and the bartenders seemed to agree, business had been sporadic. The wife and I vowed then and there that we considered it our sacred duty to do whatever we could to spur the Las Vegas economy, and pledged that we were duty bound to make another trip in 2011. Not for our own sake, mind you, but for the sake of the Las Vegas economy. We’re good people like that.

After the Paris we headed back to Caesars, where we had a few more drinks and hit the VP machines for the better part of the afternoon. We were both down a bit, but we were committed to not dip into the 9k winnings (remember, we had dedicated ourselves to a second trip this year). After playing for hours we took a break, hit the Earl of Sandwich again (why is this place so good?), and then decided to try out the Diamond lounge at P HO. The room is upstairs, kind of confusing to find, and typical of the diamond lounges I’ve been in, friendly help and crappy food. The drinks are free, though, so who’s complaining? We had a drink, made small talk with the workers, then headed back to Caesars and brought Anthony a sandwich from the Earl. Guy never comes to the strip so thought he might enjoy it. We hang out a while and decide to go over to the Bellagio. While walking through the Sportsbook at Caesars, my wife stops me and points to a guy sitting watching the races. Is that Pete Rose? Sure enough, watching the ponies is good ol’ Charlie Hustle. The wife is feeling good enough that she wants to go up to him and shake his hand and tell him he should be in the hall of fame. She decides not to, though, because she couldn’t convince herself it was him (it was. He was even wearing a black Cincinnati Reds hat. Next time).

With that we head over to the Bellagio. We love this place and would consider staying here again but we’ve never gotten any decent offers, and I really can’t justify switching from CET to Mlife given CET has treated us so well (comped rooms, up to 5 nights, no restrictions, any property). Also, it seems to me that the ARIA has sapped some of the life from the Bellagio, to be honest. The sportsbook bar was pretty busy, however, and remains one of my favorite places to have a drink. 2 or 3 Blue Moons and a hundred bucks later, we head back to Caesars to play a little roulette.

We love playing roulette, maybe me more so than the wife. I love that it’s a social game, that it takes a while between spins, and that you can win big amounts on a relatively small bet. I sit down, buy in for hundred (playing nickels) and having a great time with the roulette dealer, Tamara, when an interesting thing happens. Two young gentlemen, dressed nicely, sit down at the table and ask for a marker. A Pit Boss is called over and one of them shows his Seven Star card. He also shows them a piece of paper and I hear the Pit Boss tell the Dealer “No limitâ€. I’m assuming she means no limit to their marker, but I assume there was also no limit to their bets, but I wasn’t sure. Probably both.

Feeling pretty comfortable, I decide to inject myself in the situation by asking the men what they’re drinking (they had glasses which were full of leaves); to which one responded it was a Mojito. He then passed his glass over for me to sip. Not bad. I then asked them where they were from (Mexico) and how long they were staying (their plane was coming for them that night). I told them I thought Mexico was beautiful (which it very well may be but we’ve never been) and wished them luck. I was betting $20-$30 per roll and I don’t know how much they were betting, but they had gone through 5k in about 10 minutes. Neither looked particularly concerned as they got up to leave and wished us luck. 5k in 10 minutes without breaking a sweat. For the second time in 2 days I realized what low rollers we really were!

Anyway, lost $50 on roulette, played VP at the Sportsbook for another hour or five, and called it a night. All in all a really fun day.

    Tuesday: Time to Say Goodbye

Always the saddest day of the Vegas experience, the last full day of the trip. How to spend what precious little time left? We decided to hit the Paris Buffet (we had coupons) and went over and filled ourselves full of okay food and large quantities of juices. We had a LVA $10 off per person coupon so I think it was worth it, despite the fact I didn’t have the patience to wait in the crepe line.

We finish up breakfast and don’t really know what else to do so I suggest we start playing video poker at every casino between Paris and Harrah’s. This would give us a chance to pop in to all the casinos we had neglected to see so far and have a few drinks along the way. This clearly had the ok of the wife, so we start at Gustave’s (naturally) and then move on over to Bally’s. We hit the other bar at Bally’s, the one further up by the entrance closer to the buffet, and played a while on $20. I was pretty Blue Mooned out and had made the switch to Coors light while the wife was sticking to Goose and Crans. No luck here (although I did see a sign at the bar for 20 ounce drafts, $3, every day, which struck me as a good deal for next time) and we headed up to Bills. After Bills (no luck) we headed to Flamingo to play at Bugsy’s bar. Bugsy’s bar is a cool bar, right in the middle of the front casino, and always seems to be busy. People knock the Flamingo but for the price, location, and vibe I think it’s a great place. We played here a while, I think we were both up a little, and headed to O’shea’s. O’shea’s, not our type of place to be honest, and then off to Harrah’s. The wife was winning, I was losing (what else is new?) and we left Harrah’s to head back home to Caesars. A fun way to kill an afternoon.

It’ fairly late in the afternoon by now and we’ve got an early flight on Wed. so I promise the wife we’ll be in bed by 9. She’s happy with this so we sit down to play some VP over in the Palace Casino. BE is playing $1 and I decide to up the ante and start playing $5 bonus poker. I’m doing pretty well, and feeling pretty well I might add, when, after about a half hour, I hit 4 Aces! 400 credits x $5= $2,000! Nice! My fourth hand pay of the trip (although this is really the only one that was truly mine). What a way to end the trip. We stay for about another hour before heading to the Cheesecake factory and then, as promised, early to bed for a good night’s sleep and sweet dreams of $2,000 four of a kinds and royal flushes running through our heads.

Epilogue: This trip report was way too long and I’m sure many of you lost interest long ago. But writing about the trip is cathartic in that it lessens the ensuing depression of coming back to reality. It also acts as a record, so in future years the wife and I can go back and remember things we may have forgotten (although BE winning 9k in an hour will be pretty hard to ever forget!). I also want to point out, after having read the report myself, that we (or at least I) may come across as having a bit of an alcohol problem, which is certainly true, but only in Las Vegas. For those of you concerned with my well being I am back on a course of proper nutrition and limited alcohol intake. Until we meet again Las Vegas.

    Thanks for reading,

    Great Trip Report
Fills in the time before our vacation
Loved the wifes mini spa in the bathroom
I should try that next time.

Nice Hits on video poker

Hubby and I always play on his card
Last year at the Flamingo I was just watching him
when he had to go to the restroom

While he was gone I hit 1200 (yup right on the nose UGH)
the slot attendant asked who pulled the handle and since it was me

Great report! cant believe you left "the ultralounge" once you discovered it though :wink2:

Funny how a set of wins like that can not appear for years and then all of a sudden it starts raining hand-pays. You were smart to not blow up the win since it gives you a totally free trip back and probably some left over.

    Congrats!

    Thanks for the report!

And I would rather have a 5.5 hour non-stop than any kind of layover (though maybe because every time I have one the connecting flight has to be on the far end of whatever airport we are in)

Loved this trip report! I thought I was really lucky this past November when I hit 3 royal flushes (two were on $.25, one one $1) in five days, but this puts me to shame. Congrats!

Oh, and you mention an alcohol problem...what's the problem?! This is the way I love to do Vegas myself.

Great report. More motivation for me to stay positive on the plan of working some VP magic like you had.

Congrats on the good luck. Looking forward to the next trip report when you use some of the winnings and (hopefully) comps to go back soon.

Great TR... the only thing worse thana physical before your trip would be right after your trip. Doc says "ummmm sir we tried to draw blood but it appears we have tapped a keg." LOL

doesn't sound like an alcohol problem to me, you drink enough to have a good time and then wake up again in the morning. Sounds like to me like you know your limits.

    Thanks for the report

But it sort of sounds like you had not been in the bathroom until Monday.

How could you miss a Wing Chair?

    Congrats on the wins!!
