    My Trip Report

My grandparents from Georgia came over to Memphis to visit this weekend.

They wanted to go to the Paula Deen buffet so we headed down there saturday morning. We left around 9:00 a.m and got there about 9:40 or so.

I told them I could get them and my sister free passes to the buffet if they let me play for 45 minutes, but they wanted to make sure they got the breakfast buffet lol.

So we paid for the buffet..$37 for 4 people..not to bad.

As always I felt like I needed a wheelchair to leave the buffet, but managed to make it back to the casino floor.

My grandparents decided to go play slots and my sister doesn't know what the hell you do in a Casino (she's not a gambler) so she followed me over to a BJ table. Watched the table for a few minutes and didn't see many high cards coming out. Bought in for $100 and in 10 minutes I was down $60...so I left that table..screw that lol.

Walked around some more found a craps table. Started out with $40 there and was playing $10 don't pass line with $24 odds. Had some good rolls and won my first 3 don't pass bets. Won back that $100 I was starting to loose..but not for long.

They gave this guy the dice and he set a point of 10...he rolled a 4, 6, 8, 9, 4, and then the point..he proceeded to do this several times and I think it was the table giving him the dice to get a don't pass bettor out of there lol..so anyway I took the hint, tipped the dealers and had $5 in my hand.

I found this other $5 BJ table and put out a $20 for some more chips...gave my sister $15 worth of chips to play and off we went. I lost my initial $15 or so and bought in for another $100 ($220 so far). I lost that down to $50 and then things started to turn. I started out with $10-$15 bets then moved to $25-$30 bets, and I started winning. My sister doesn't know the first thing about BJ so I was helping her and the table was playing basic strat so that helped! After a little over an hour of play, she had turned her $15 into $62(Thanks to me :)), and I turned what was looking like being down almost $220 into recovering $220 at that table.

I colored up and cashed out...we went looking for my grandparents and found them at a video poker machine. Was waiting for them to finish so I put $10 into a jacks or better machine and turned that into $35. Cashed out and ended up being up $30 for the little jaunt down there.

Not a big win but I was happy considering I was looking at being down $220.

I didn't put this in the TR section cause it was more of just a mini TR and I had a good time down there.

    BTW..this was @ Harrahs Tunica.

What's the big attraction with PD's buffet?

The main attraction to PD's buffet is that she is on the food network...I like her food at the buffet....play some table games for a little bit then talk to a pit boss and you can get a few buffet passes.

As far as places to stay..I would avoid Bally's.

Gold Strike / Horseshoe / Roadhouse are all next to each other so if your wanting to visit different casino's one of those are pretty good options as you can walk to / from those 3. The rest you need to drive / shuttle to.

Harrah's has at least 3 different hotels on their propterty's which require a shutttle to the casino and one is @ the casino.

Sam's town isn't bad as well and is close to another casino, but the rest of them will need to be driven to.

I liked the Harrahs property in general. Nice rooms, generally pleasant casino - with some adverse gaming, but I came out ahead so who's complaining? - and I liked the buffet. Chef, you know I'm not generally a buffet fan, but the PD buffet had a variety of things you don't normally see at a buffet, weighted towards more southern-style foods, and it was pretty good.

If I was going to spend more time in the casino tho, I'd go where the better VP is - Gold Strike (MGM property).

My personal list would always have Gold Strike at the top.

Yes, southern style buffet is nice and she is a popular TV chef and a nice woman but I would gamble at the Gold Strike and for me that means I would stay there and eat there too. For me, its the casino first and foremost. Everything else is of lesser concern.

However, I admit ... if her buffet is all that important to you, you can stay at that hotel, gamble in their casino and its not all that much worse than the Gold Strike.

I just favor the Gold Strike. Better casino, better casino personnel.

We will be in Tunica/Memphis May 2-4 staying at the Horseshoe. Then Nashville 5-7. Any recent news on the Horseshoe? We may also try the Hollywood, any scoop on that one as well?

Our main reason for being there is Memphis. We're heading to Graceland, Beale Street, Sun Records and a couple of other places but staying in Tunica. Its one of those bucket list things.

Memphis in May will be going on as well while you are there so you might plan on downtown memphis being busier than normal. Riverfront drive will be closed from the Crump / 240 / 55 Side to to the Amphitheatre on mud island.

Horseshoe is nice...I have never stayed there, just played there. Though if I'm gambling in that section, I prefer the gold strike.

We went to Tunica for the first time last September and stayed at the Horseshoe. It was a nice room. I think it was just a standard - nothing fancy - but it seemed newer and was very clean and had a really comfy bed!

Horseshoe is great for poker players. Basically, if you play and swipe in they'll feed you, it's awesome! lol. We played for maybe an hour and a half and we ate at the sandwich place right by the poker room for free. Food was great there too. Buffet, eh, so so for dinner, but the breakfast buffet was pretty good.

We played some black jack and screwed around a little at the Hollywood. The place wasn't too bad, but seemed a little smokier than some of the other casinos. It was fairly crowded when we were there though. We ate at their steakhouse (The Fairbanks) which was excellent.

Well, here's my trip report on my blog from that trip if anyone cares to read it. http://madisonhousedesigns.blogspot.com/2009/09/surprise-getaway.html

Just in case you make it up the Harrah's Tunica and don't get snared by the PD buffet, I thought I would share that they have closed the Replays sports bar and replaced it with a Toby Keith's Bar and Grill. I haven't been there yet but I had a great time at the one in the Las Vegas Harrah's.

    Yeah I noticed that.

It's still closed, though I don't recall seeing a sign showing when they were going to open the new bar.

    BTW...

I went back to Harrah's yesterday...bunch of my friends wanted to go, so I took $100 with me and turned it into $250 before I left :)

But Harrah's now has a mini bac table for those of you interested. Previously only Goldstrike had a mini bac table.

What suprised me most was this was a $5 min table on a friday night @ 9:00. It's on the same row with the Craps tables and directly across from the high limit room.
