    My Trip Report

    Our 13th trip

When I booked this trip, I knew it was our 13th trip to Vegas. I didn’t realize we’d be there on Friday the 13th til later – Will it be a good omen or bad? (queue the “Twlight Zone†music….)

Anyway, this was just a trip with me and my husband (M). We had been out earlier in the year in April and had a winning trip so we figured what the heck, let’s go for it again and I got in on the “pay with miles†promotion with Delta (get a credit card, use 25,000 which is 250 off your ticket and then get the 25,000 reimbursed back to you) So no miles spent and the tickets ended up being $47 out of pocket – can’t pass that up for direct flights out of CVG!

    Day 1 – Wed Nov 11th

So, up at 5:30am on Wed, Nov 11th…Get the kids off to daycare (my parents would pick them up later) and off to CVG we go..Line for Starbucks was huge so we opted for “Peet’s coffee†It was fine. Flight was pretty uneventful. Watched the Time Traveler’s wife. I had just finished the book a few weeks ago, so that worked well. Obviously, the book was much better than the movie, but M seemed to like it just fine. It passed the time…We arrived in Vegas about ½ hr early, which is always nice.

We opted to do “carry on†only this trip to save the $15 each way per bag. We will definitely be doing this in the future. Don’t have to wait for baggage, etc. So off to the Alamo kiosk we go…Got a full size for $148 for the trip. I think this is an OK price but I am still sore since we paid $68 for a premium last trip…the car selections weren’t great. I spied a Nissan Altima, but alas someone was already sitting in it. I think we ended up with a Mitsubishi…M wasn’t thrilled with the performance, but it got the job done. We brought our GPS with us and that was great in getting around and not having to mess with printing out mapquest directions, etc

Arrived at MSS around 10:30am. I was shocked when they said they had a room available. I was hoping for high floor, low odd numbered room away from train, but the best they could do was 1523, we had a view of The STRAT .

So, off to play VP….For those of you that read my last trip report, we play almost exclusively 25 cent VP – DB and DDB and some Treasure Chest JoB, exclusive to Boyd casinos. We also have our “side bets†for certain big jackpots.

The last couple trips I have kept a piece of paper on me and recorded all big hits ( 4 of kind or larger) this Trip M came up with the idea of using index cards (we each got a side per day) and it worked out really well. I also recorded the times of all of the 4 of kinds – 1st time doing this, but it was really interesting to look at. I’m debating whether to put these details in this report…I may just do the highlights for you.

We go to the Boar bar and let the playing begin…I hit the first 4 of a kind, so that means M has to stand until one of us hits again. I hit another one 8 minutes later so his agony didn’t last very long. After about 45 minutes of playing, M wasn’t hitting anything and he was already down $120. So we decided to mix it up a bit…We went down to the 4Q’s. At the bar, they have a Progressive DDB on all of their 4ok. I was surprised there wasn’t a prog on straight flush and Royal…but anyway… It proved to be a good move to the 4 Q’s…M almost immediately gets 4A’s for $220. We each get a couple for 250 credits..Then I get a full house dealt to me – Aces over 7’s…I turn to M and say “Son of a B!tch!, I have to throw the boat!†By now, I’ve had a couple beers with only the coffee and pastry from the airport in my tummy, so I’m a bit tipsy….So, I throw the 7’s and up pops an Ace and a 2 – Yahoo! Progressive for $522.70!!! I hit another small one for 250 and M hits Kings, 3’s and Aces again for 208.45. We are off to a sweet start! We like the 4 Queens!

By now, it’s close to 1:30 Vegas time (4:30 cincy time) and I’ve had a coffee and pastry all day and several beers, so we decide we better eat. Go to the MSS brew pub and split nachos and I get a burger and M gets the filet sandwich. Good, but burger didn’t seem as good as remember.

After lunch, we go back to the Boar bar at MSS. M hits 2 for 250 and 4-3’s for 400 credits and I get dealt 3 aces and get the 4th ace and the kicker once again for $500!!! This day was starting off great!!!!!

Now, since M got the first “Aces†hit, I had to walk up the stairs to our room – got off on 3rd floor (learned this last trip) and then walked up to the 15th floor! Man, my legs were burning by the 7th floor! Probably not the best time to do it, as I had been drinking, but wanted to get it out of the way. Since I got the first Aces with a kicker, M had to chug the 11% Monique Brewmasters reserve – I took a sip before he chugged – :vomit:And since M got the 1st 2,3, or 4, I had to massage and encourage him for 5 minutes while he sat and played (I always feel like an idiot doing this, I did this at the 4Q)

I think we hung in the room for a while and M was feeling lucky so he tried a 50 cent machine and hit a 4ok for 250 credits… Went back to quarters, I went on a dry spell while matt hit 2 for 250, 4-4’s for 400 and 2’s with a kicker for 800 credits.

Since I couldn’t hit anything, I suggested we play Treasure Chest, we had tried to get on earlier in the day but it was jam-packed. Got 2 next to each other M hit 5 for 140 and 1 for 180, while I hit 2 for 140

I think we went and ate again a little after 8 pm…I had pizza and not sure what M had…

We rounded out the night at the bar, with me 5 4 of kinds for 250 and M getting 2 for 250 and 4-aces for 800 credits

So total for the day, I got 13 4 of kinds and M got 22!!! 17 of his were at MSS – he got $34 in scratch card (all $2) and 10 of mine were at MSS and I got $22 (8 for $2 and 2 for $3)

We were up a considerable amount the first day. I think we called it a night around midnight

    Day 2 – Thursday Nov 12th

Slept in til close to 10 (how wonderful!!)Did the same ol thing on Thursday….Started off at the Boar bar…M hit 2 for 250. Went to Treasure chest…M and I couldn’t sit next to each other, so I was on one side and M on the other…M being the chatty guy that he is, struck up a conversation with the couple next to him…I eventually make my way over and the guy is also a member of this board – Shout out to Morpheus7272!!! We talk about our hits and coupons, etc. Super nice couple, hope you guys did well!!!! I hit 2 for 140, M none, but he held is own on $20 for quite a long time. We head down to the 4 Q to try to recreate the magic of the day before. We each hit one (M got 4 Aces for $211 and I got one for 250 credits) and then headed back, to eat lunch…again, something at 777 brew pub…I think we watched the Born to be wild Light show that night….Rest of the night was uneventful…We didn’t do nearly as well as the day before….

    I got 6 total 4 of kinds and M got 11. (5 scratch off’s for me=$10 and 9 scratch off’s for M, 1 for $5, 1 for $3 and the rest $2)

    Day 3 – Friday Nov 13th

We got up much earlier start this morning probably up before 7am…started our morning once again at the Boar bar and each hit 1 for 250. We decided we needed to get the heck out of dodge for awhile, so we had match plays at Hard Rock and the Palms (thanks Joe and My Sullary!!!!) So we hit the Hard Rock and each did $10 match play on BJ. I win and M loses. I try another hand at $10 and lose. So still up $10. We then go to VP and play out $10 free slot play. I think we each put in another $20 and hung for bit. Neither of us got a 4 of a kind, but we sat and listened to the Jams for awhile…We also went out to the pool area to see where Rehab is filmed…Hard Rock is a crazy place to park…we finally ended up in the garage but the elevators didn’t work…it was bizarre, but it was a nice diversion. We then went to the Palms with our $10 in free slot play. We breezed thru it quickly…I like the vibe of the place though.

After our match play fun, we head to Hash House A GoGo based on the “Man vs Food†episode. M got the Fried Chicken Benedict and I got the Blueberry pancake. I think we both ate about ½ of our meals. I had a Restaurant.com coupon to get $10 off, but the prices had risen, since I guess the episode aired. It was good and portions were huge, but I wouldn’t put it on my “must do listâ€.

We then decide to drive out to Mt Charleston. We start driving up and notice that cars coming down had several inches of snow on them! It was a bizarre site! So we go up to the top and stop in at the lodge and have a beer…M was itching to play VP but the pay tables were terrible so we just drank our beer and left….We then went to the ski area and there were tons of people snow boarding…We got out and checked it out (M is a skier, I am not) It was cold and I was in capris so we left after a short while

We finally get back to MSS around 3ish… Decide to sit down at Treasure Chest. Had a pretty good run there. We each get 5 TCs – Me 3 for 140 and 2 for 180 and M 2 for 140 and 3 for 180.

I was getting kind of hungry but we weren’t ready for a big meal yet so we headed to GG for the Shrimp. Had a b1 g1 so it was back to the original prices with the coupon. YUMMY.

I think we walked around for bit then eventually had dinner around 9 or so. Decide to go up to the Boar bar…I hit 1 for 250 and M hit 2’s and 3’s for 400 each…but after that I couldn’t hit anything….So I went to the bank a bit down from the bar that has the FP 10/7 DB and M stayed at the bar. While we were separated I hit 3 for 250 and he hit 3’s with a kicker and another for 250. Finally he came down and sat near me…He wasn’t sitting there long and I got 4 Aces for 800. Yes and then about 20 minutes later…. I look over at his screen and he’s just staring at it…he held 4 spades to the royal and got the 5th. !!!! Yahoo!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! $1000! We go up the bar and do shots – pineapple upside down cake – a couple of those each and he’s drinking pretty heavily.:beer::beer:We stayed at the bar for awhile and drank but couldn’t hit anything…So we decide to go down to the 4Q….M had been sick the whole trip had a nagging cough, so we go to Walgreens to get some medicine. By now it’s well past 1 in the morning. Fremont Street changes dramatically at this time. Didn’t feel quite as safe walking around as I normally do…Not many people around. There was security at Walgreens, but didn’t see a large presence on Fremont or in 4Q (there are always security guards mulling around MSS)

So M at this point is feeling quite good and still wanting to celebrate his Royal..:drunk:I was past drunk and headed back towards sobriety and didn’t want to go down hill again, so I was on the water train at this point…But M pressed on…He wanted a Jaeger Bomb at 4Q but the bartender said they had Monster, but don’t comp that or Jaeg? WTF? MSS comps Jaeg and their off brand of Red Bull, I think it’s called Artic Blast or something…He wanted $8 for it, we said no, thanks…..I get up to use the restroom and come back and M is antsy to tell me something – he got his first hooker experience..She came up to him, rubbed his back and winked at him…He was thrilled! He said she must have know he was “Royalty†(aka for just hitting the Royal) Anyhoo, M did nothing at 4Q but at 2:25 am, I got 4-4’s with a 3 for $312 – 112 extra with the progressive! Sweet! By this time, I knew I had to get M back to MSS…I think we went to bed around 3ish….

    I had 12 4 of a kinds, got 11 scratch off’s – 9 for $2 and 2 for $3…M had 10 4 of a kinds and 1 Royal, so he also had 11 scratch offs – All 2’s except for the one from the Royal – it was a $5!!!!

Oh yes, our “side bet†for Royals, the other person has to eat sushi, for Spades, it is Squid!!! (more to come on that)

    Day 4 – Saturday Nov 14th

Our last full day in Vegas – didn’t make it downstairs til close to 10:30…I had my Millionaire’s coffee (baileys, kahlua and Frangelico) and M just had black coffee. I got 1 4 of kind for 250 and M got 4-3’s for 400, 4-4’s for 400 and 7’s for 250…Had a few coffees and M wasn’t feeling so hot so he went up to the room and I played some TC – couldn’t hit anything….Went up to the room to check on him, he’s down for the count, so I decide to go to the 777 and sit at the bar and get some lunch…I got the nachos and some sort of chicken soup. Barely made a dent in the nachos…Anyhoo, left there and went to the 10/7 DB machines…played for about 20 minutes…and the old tummy was a rumbling…I won’t go into graphic detail, but something about my meal did not sit right with me…Went back up to the room and felt like crap for several hours. Finally expelled everything from my system:vomit: and started feeling better around 7 pm….by then M was feeling better and wanted food, so I said, I’ll order something from 777, got them on the line and they said “we don’t take phone orders†um, ok…M was still not upto snuff and I had just turned the corner, so I trudged down there and placed my order – Wings and an Italian for M,. Fish and chips for me….Nothing else sounded good..Basically everything I like on the menu has the chili in it and since that was the basis of the nachos earlier, I couldn’t even stomach anything remotely close to it….and a couple of drinks…So he gives me the total and I say I’ll charge that to my room and he wants some piece of paper verifying my room…I said, um, I don’t have it, but I have ID…(and I’ve charged every meal to my room since I’ve been here and you are the 1st to ask for this) Um, sorry ma’am I need the card….So I have to the front desk, get the card, come back, he has to re-enter everything in the computer – major PIA!!!!. Specifically ask for mayo for the Italian and he repeated to me, I have mayo, ranch and ketchup in the bag….Get up to the room, no mayo…oh well, M eats his sandwich dry….After getting some food in our stomachs and watching “Con-Air†for the ump-teenth time on TBS, we get enough energy to hit the casino…..

I play DB 10/7 and M’s playing DDB on the “low-boys†as we call them, (slant tops). M gets 2 for 250 and I get 3 for 250. We decide to go down to 4Q’s and get our cash back…We play a bit – I get 4-9’s for 250. We get our cash back - $20, plus $5 in free play (I didn’t know you had to get your cash back every day to get the bonus free play, so I guess we lost some money there.) Oh and for anyone that doesn’t have a card at 4Q’s, if you go Spin the Wheel at the front of the casino…you getfree playing cards upon signing up, $10 free play after you put 10 points on card and a free bag after 50….There were some other coupons as well – b1g1’s I think….So we both signed up, got the free play and cards and continued to use his card to do the rest, so we got one bag.

One observation – 4Q’s is rowdy! We sat at the front bar and people are always popping in from Fremont and its just nuts – I guess I’m used to the more laid back nature of MSS….

So after that, head back to MSS, where we rounded out night at the low-boys…I got 5 for 250 (got jacks dealt twice to me within 10 minutes) and M got 1 for 250 and Aces for 800.

M, being the gracious husband that he is, decided to give me a pass on the Squid today because of my tummy issues, but next trip out, I have to make good on my bet!

We decided to call it a night around 1am….

    Day 5 – Sunday Nov 15th – leaving day….

Wake up and pack everything up and leave our bags in the room and go downstairs for one last Hoorah before we have to leave for the airport….We each get a 4 of kind for 250. It’s now time to go to the Player’s club to review our charges….I fully expect everything to be comped off as they have in the past….We have only charged about $135 in food. So, she takes off a charge of $32 and $29 and said that is the best she can do…I said “seriously??†and she said yes. We put on 22,000 points…(last trip we put on 21,000 points and got $200-300 of food taken off – we had a $100 comp at the 2nd street) She reviewed it and said, I’m sorry that’s all I can do….WOW! I am flabbergasted. More like pi$$ed off. So, I say, who else can I talk to you and she said I could talk to the slot director and I said Ok, she gave me his card…..So to make a long story short…We had $75 of charges remain.

So this whole debacle ran into us trying to get airport, so we left about 20-30 minutes later than we intended to…Got to the airport, security was a breeze, except for the water bottle M stuck in my bag (thanks!!) Got quiznos while M checked the Bengals score – Go Bengals! The flight coincided with the Bengals game, but luckily the planes had the seat back screens and we got ESPN updates every few minutes…Love those seat backs! Bengals won! Woohoo! Flight was pretty uneventful after that…

    Final Thoughts

    • · We won!!! Two winning trips in a row is nice!
    • · The 777 Brew Pub is going down hill – they’ve scaled back the menu and the quality isn’t there as much..and Um, oh yeah, I got sick ½ hour after eating there!!!!!!!!!!! (you can look at my previous posts, I normally sing their praises)
    • · I have some Downtown coupons left over – some match plays for Plaza and Vegas Club and some 2 for 1’s at various places…All expire at the end of the year…would like to send them to one person – first to PM me, gets them!!
    • · When we got home, I emailed the slot director and this is the response I got:

I am sorry that you were disappointed about the amount of comps that your host could take care of. We do train the host to take into consideration the customers earning potential and actually losses for making their comp decisions. During this trip and your other recent trips you have rotated approximately the same amount of coin in in very low hold machines. This causes your point balance to go up but we can only comps so much based on your actually losses ($110).

If your host would have comped of any more of your charges we would not have made any money. As in any business you cannot operate in the negative. I hope you understand and I will discuss this with your host.

    • I inserted “your host†for the hosts name….Anyway, I was just in total shock…We’ve been staying there for years and have always had everything comped and last trip we were winners (like this trip) and we still got everything comped. From this email, it sounds like they operate on coin out vs coin in which is very disappointing….
    • The whole thing left a bad taste in my mouth and put a damper on the end of the trip….$18 of the charges were tips, so we are only taking about $56 bucks here. I know most of you will think I’m moaning about nothing, but it’s the principle and to only comp $60 worth of food over 4 days is just crazy!:Þ:Þ:Þ

    • · I am really disappointed in MSS and the comp issue. Maybe I’m over-reacting, but they have never thought twice about comping our stuff off (maybe we’ve always been losers????) I’ve learned one thing, ask for comps as you go and don’t wait til the end…if you lose for 2 days and then win on the 3rd, you’ll wipe out all your comps!
    • We are seriously considering moving to a new home base next trip. I liked 4Q but it did get a little rowdy in there at night..I guess I like the easy going nature of MSS…I guess we’ll have to see what our offers are like
    • We had a fantastic trip!! I probably come across sour, but I'm not, we had a great and fun trip, the comp thing just ticked me off.

    Thanks for reading!!!!

thanks for the report! I enjoyed hearing about all of the 4OAK, and the royal from some hardcore VP players.

It sounds like the bean counters at Boyd are sending things even further downhill with the comp system. I always thought that the idea behind comps was to take care of the player, win or lose, and the player would then come back next time to give the casino a chance to take back today's winnings. Corporations today don't seem to care about tomorrow. Its all about the manager making his bonus today, because he's planning to be gone tomorrow. To hell with the future.

    WOW - WOW - WOW!!

What a great TRIP (And Report!) I gotta tell you guys - you hit more quads than I can believe! Seems the last few trips If I am hitting my wife is loosing and vice versa - fun when you can go back and forth like you guys did.

Is 180 coins the biggest you've seen on the treasure chest ? I hit one at sams town once for I want to say 240 or 280 coins once but that was the highest - I know they say you can win up to is it 4,000 coins (??) but I have never seen anyone hit that. After you've played DDB it's hard to play machines that don't pay as many on the quads.

Seems like you like downtown - do you ever play at the El-Cortez ?? They have a ton of great video poker there, and a pretty liberal comp policy - they also have opened their cabana suites and they are really cool (ANd cheap! and you can get 2 free nights for hitting a royal there). Anyway, I would consider it.

Sounds like you had fun! Loved watching the Bengals on HBO this past August. Didn't think they were going to be this good. Good thing I don't bet on sports. Go Hawkeyes!

funny how the way that comps are figured varies. i play mostly tables and i've always been told it's not how much you win or lose, it's average bet times number of hours played divided by expected loss squared by pi (or something like that). you obviously did better than most people. unless you are the luckiest people on earth, every trip isn't going to be a winner. guess they just need you to lose to treat you like a valued, loyal customer.

    Very entertaining trip report!!!

I get a little paper notebook and carry it around with me to record all the key happenings on our trips and track our wins/losses. This gives me the information I need to taunt Mrs. Flusher should she lose more than I do.

I happened to just tabulate the quads and such for our last trip:
    http://www.royalflushervegas.com/2009/11/you-gotta-play-it-by-gut.html

Also, regarding the 777 brewpub, we have had some amazing meals there in past but lately we've had more disappointments than good meals.

The last meal was a disaster. The waitress brought me the wrong entree completely. I had to wait while they made the correct order -with the wrong side. She had to fix that too. She also got the drinks wrong.

I figured she was having a tough day so I didn't give her much heck and tipped her almost double. I did mention to her that she was the worst waitress on the planet and a terrible person though. When she stopped crying, I'm pretty sure she had come around to my point of view. So I probably did her a favor by helping her know herself a bit better. Definitely worth the extra dollar tip.

The response from the slot director indicates to me that you still earn points there via coin-in. They obviously took a hard look, however, at your overall profitability to them before issuing what they consider to be discretionary comps. I think you're on to something about using up any food comps throughout your stay if you can.

I've found that comps often are more art than science, and that seems to be the case at MSS.

I enjoyed your report, Hadn't seen the miles thing on delta, do you have a link for info?

That's a pretty harsh response from the slot director. He's probably telling the truth, but if I got that, I'd probably find another place to go, because I'm of the opinion that comps are to get you to come back.

    Tight comps

I normally get something off my bill, this time I made a good hit and when I asked what they could do for me on bill, I got told nothing.

I've just been skimming through the thread but the part about slots v. comps is very interesting. I'd always heard that (in almost all cases) general comping was based on "projected loss" which is always determined by amount/type of play (or credits/ coins played in the case of slots).

I'd never heard it being determined by the Net Loss. Anyway, like another poster said, if you're ultimately disatisfied with the service or rewards, let your feet do the talking on the next trip and go to a different casino.

TC is 140, 180, 250, 500 coins or $1199...I have gotten them all except for the $1199. Hubby actually got the $1199 back in 2002 (we too thought it was a urban legend, kind of like the MSS $5000 scratch card!) But I can honestly say, it does exist as I saw it with my own eyes!

I agree on the DDB, that was my hubby's issue - that's why TC "bored" him...I like it to slow down the pace if we are losing...

I love your tabulations...i didn't keep that good of notes - but I did keep how many "dealts" and I did get one "blind" 4 of a kind...and oddly enough, neither of us got Straught Flushes

We too have had some great meals there...I just don't know what to say...I'm more sad about it than anything...

It has since expired, but I go on to Delta.com frequently and one day it was on the homepage.

It was pretty harsh, but i'm glad he explained the reasoning behind it....I am interested to see what the future comps are.

Aside from being a total indulgence in anal retentive behavior, I've learned some things from working the math.

For one thing we weren't getting our share of Royals. A re-focussing on that including a skills remediation program, and a number of sacrificial ceremonies with some of the smaller quadripeds fixed that problem.

I found I wasn't getting as many Straights Flush as the Quad Queen was - and tracked it to not seeing 3 to a Straight Flush - some practice on the WinSimulator 3000 featuring WinPoker put that straight (as it were) and now I get my proper share.

Funny report on the side bets

Walking up to the room on the 15th floor. Too funny.

I'm at MSS and can just confirm that points on slots and VP are still earned via coin-in. Since points now can be converted directly to food at a favorable rate (compared to cash back), I guessing that plays a part in discretionary food comps at check out.

I ate at the 777 Brewpub all 4 nights of my stay about a month ago.....went with 2 friends.....we all ordered something different everytime and Loved it!

If the service was bad, then that shouldn't relate to the food being bad or going "downhill".....I think the place is excellent!
