    My Trip Report

Brenda and I returned from 8 days/nights in Las Vegas in late May staying at the Sunset Station Hotel & Casino the first four days/nights (5/20 - 5/24) before heading to Red Rock Casino Resort & Spa the next four days/nights (5/24 - 5/28). This was our 18th trip to Vegas over the past 7 years, our 9th time staying at Sunset Station and our 7th time staying at Red Rock. You can check out their websites at:

    http://www.sunsetstation.com
    http://www.redrocklasvegas.com

We called our host at Sunset Station and told her we wished to stay four nights beginning Wednesday, 5/20. She offered to comp three of the four nights up-front with the fourth night at a casino rate of $45.00 (plus tax). Plus she arranged for a limo pickup at the airport. I contacted our host at Red Rock and told her we wished to stay four nights at Red Rock beginning Sunday, 5/24 and she also offered to comp three of the four nights up-front with the last night at a casino rate of $80.00 (plus tax). I also booked a stretch limo (Presidential Limousine) for the ride from Sunset Station to Red Rock on 5/24.

For those of you not familiar with our gambling habits, since I've given up playing blackjack, we pretty much stick to playing full pay deuces wild video poker. We play quarter machines, max coins (5). A Natural Royal Flush pays 4,000 coins ($1,000) and Four Deuces pays 1,000 coins ($250), and a Wild Royal Flush pays 125 coins ($31.25).

    Day 1 (Wednesday, 5/20)

We're up at 4:30am and out the door heading for the Austin-Bergstrom airport about 5:30am. We usually part at the "Fast Park" parking lot which is minutes from the airport. It's covered parking and the rates are reasonable. But this trip, we had a friend take us to the airport. When we arrived at the airport (6:05am), we couldn't believe how busy they were. We made our way through security and then grabbed some breakfast and headed for our gate. Flight was fine taking off at 7:45am, with a short layover in Phoenix, arriving in Las Vegas around 10:30am. We head down to grab our luggage and look for our driver. Found him. We arrive at Sunset Station, tip the driver, and head to the front desk to see if they have a room ready for us. Yes, we can check in early. We took our luggage to the room and unpacked a bit.

Today is Wednesday and every Wednesday is "Senior 50 Plus Wednesday" at Station Casinos. For all the "under 50s" out there, see what you have to look forward to. On these special Wednesdays, there's 5X points all day, ½ points dining at all restaurants 6am-6pm, as well as monthly specials. During the month of May, for us '50 plus seniors", there's a drawing every Wednesday afternoon at 4pm. For every 10 points earned (while gambling), you have 1 entry in the drawing. You have to "activate" your earned entries between 2pm and 3:45pm on the day of the drawing. In these drawings, there's a $1500 winner, a $1000 winner, a $500 winner, and two $250 winners. Plus, all winners get a $25 RC Willey Gift Card. On the last Wednesday of the month of May, in addition to the 4pm drawing, there's a grand prize drawing at 5pm with four grand prizes - $5000 RC Willey shopping sprees. Needless to say, we didn't win at the two Wednesday drawings while in Vegas. There's also a daily swipe where you swipe your boarding pass during the month of May for various awards. These could be a certain number of points added to your account, a multiplier (i.e. 7X) for your points that day, free buffets, free bowling, free bingo game cards, etc.

At 11:30am, we're sitting at the video poker machines near Hooters to begin our gambling. We play the "optimum" video poker machines. With these machines, for every $4 cycled through, you get 1 point added to your account. Okay, where's the drink lady? We had our first drink lady sighting at 11:35am. Not bad. For today's daily swipe, Wifey receives 1000 entries for Friday and Saturday evening drawings for cash prizes. I swiped and received 7X points today. Nice. I have no idea what we had for lunch or dinner today. I do remember that I played 8+ hours on my first $100 I put into the machine. Wifey played until 5:30pm before calling it a night while I kept playing until 10:30pm.

Day 1 Gambling Summary (Sunset Station):

    Me
    - down $200.00 (14 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $200.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $300.00 (4 'wild royals')
    - down $300.00 for the trip

    Day 2 (Thursday, 5/21):

We're both up at 4:04am to begin a new day in Las Vegas (actually, Henderson). I left $5 on the pillow and asked housekeeping if she could please leave extra towels, soap, and lotion which she did after making up the room. I did this every morning on this trip at Sunset Station. We're out the door by 4:35am. While Wifey headed to the machines, I stopped at the Sunset Cafe for takeout - 2 orders of grilled cheese and potato salad plus a large orange juice for me and tomato juice for Wifey. I brought along a "Thirsty, Please send Drink Lady" sign for emergencies. I figured if we had to wait too long for a drink lady to stop by, I'd simply hold up our sign to the camera in the sky. Today, Wifey started playing by 4:45am while I didn't get started until 5am.

When the drink lady shows up, we start with our coffee drinks before moving up to Miller Light for Wifey and Coronas for Hubby. Later in the day, we always switch to Merlot.

This was turning into a rather nasty day, feeding those hungry machines. They love Ben Franklins. By 3pm, we switched to Merlot and decide to take a break at 5pm and headed over to Capri Italian Ristorante for dinner. When we checked in, we received some coupons that included a free entree at Capri's. Nice. After dinner, we found the same machines available so sat back down at 6pm. Wifey played another 30 minutes before calling it a night while I played until 8pm. Today, Wifey swiped for 1000 points added to our account while I swiped for 5000 points.
Day 2 Gambling Summary (Sunset Station):

    Me
    - down $625.00 (14 'wild royals')
    - down $825.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $700.00 (9 'wild royals')
    - down $1000.00 for the trip

    Day 3 (Friday, 5/22):

We're up at 3:01am to start the day. Out the door by 3:25am. Once again, I stopped at the Sunset Cafe for takeout while Wifey headed to our machines. We had $3 off coupons so I ordered three grilled cheese sandwiches with potato salad plus a couple large juices. Whenever we could, we charged food to the room. By 3:45am, Wifey is playing at her machine and I start at my machine at 4am. Today, Wifey swiped for 4X points today while I swiped for 50 drawing entries.

Our host found us at our machines this morning and told us she could enter either one of us in a slot tournament that weekend but we declined. She also mentioned that there's some sort of a "points challenge" that begins at 3pm on Friday with a secret drawing on Sunday. We told her we were leaving Sunday morning at 7am. That's too bad. Okay, by leaving we don't mean leaving the state, we mean leaving Sunset Station. We would be heading to Red Rock at 7am Sunday morning. Great, that could work. We decide that our host would enter me in this "points challenge" where you get a certain number of drawing entries for the Sunday "secret" drawing based on your accumulated points starting on Friday at 3pm. Our host would check the list of winners on Sunday and if I won anything she would call my cell phone and I would have to make my way back to Sunset Station to collect my cash prize. We were hoping if I did win, I would win enough to justify the cost of getting back to Sunset Station, collecting the prize and then getting back to Red Rock. We'll worry about that on Sunday if our host calls me with the good news.

Just after 10am, Wifey hits her first Royal Flush ($1000) in two years. Yippee! Wifey grabs her phone to take a short video of her Royal ringing up the 4000 credits to send to our daughter. I spent the day feeding my machine Ben Franklins. We both managed to hit four deuces twice each and that helped. I order us a couple grilled chicken sandwiches from Fatburger for lunch and for dinner, I ordered us a couple bowls of New England clam chowder from the Oyster Bar when they opened at 4pm. We ate these meals at our machines.

We drank mostly Merlot this trip and it tasted great. I think Sunset must have upgraded their Merlot because it sure tasted better this trip than in the past at Sunset Station. Wifey played until 5:15pm while I played until 7:30pm. There's a drawing tonight at 8:15 and again Saturday night at 8:15pm. Since I had some time to kill until tonight's drawing, I decided it's time to head to the Roulette table. Hey, it's not my money I'm risking. Someone at work requested that I place two separate $10 bets for him. Since I don't want to use his real name, I'll call him Sockman (a.k.a. Sock Mama). Here's his brilliant betting scheme for bet #1:

    1. Bet $10 on red.
    2. If it should win, let it ride on black.
    3. If it should win again, let it all ride on red.
    4. Should red win again, let it all ride on red again.

I wasn't sure what night I would head to the Roulette table but I figured it would be on my way back to the room one evening. For some reason, I decided tonight's the night for bet #1.

So... I throw down $10 and get two $5 chips. The minimum bet is $5. I make the $10 bet on red. There's several other people playing at this table besides me. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ black. Sorry, Sock Mama - you lose. The second bet will be placed some other night. Time to head over to where the drawing will take place. I'm not a winner for tonight's drawing so I head back to the room and call it a night.

Day 3 Gambling Summary (Sunset Station):

    Me
    - down $475.00 (17 'wild royals', 2 'four deuces')
    - down $1300.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - up $900.00 (21 'wild royals', 2 'four deuces', '1 'royal flush')
    - down $100.00 for the trip

    Day 4 (Saturday, 5/23):

We're up at 3:18am to start the day. Out the door by 3:45am. Once again, I stopped at the Sunset Cafe for takeout while Wifey headed to our machines. I got Wifey a grilled cheese but I opted for a turkey and swiss sandwich. We both had potato salad and our large juices. Wifey is playing deuces wild by 3:55am while I begin my day's gambling at 4:15am. For today's daily swipe,
We each received 1000 points. Tonight, we having dinner at Sonoma Cellar Steakhouse. We like having dinner at this restaurant every time we visit Sunset Station. When we were here last December, the chef had changed the menu. No bisque soup. I was disappointed and was looking forward to having the bisque soup this trip. A few weeks ago, I checked the menu online. What???? Where's the bisque soup???? It's not here. I sent an e-mail explaining my disappointment last December and that I was looking forward to their bisque soup but to my surprise it wasn't on the menu. I received a very nice e-mail from the Director of Food & Beverage. He told me their Room Chef of Sonoma Cellar is Schuyler Schultz who is very talented and would be more than willing to run a bisque special while we're here for all to enjoy. That's great! I sent back a response and told them we were planning to have dinner that Saturday evening and looked forward to it.

Wifey wanted to be hungry at 5pm so she only had a small garden salad for lunch. Remember, we've been up since just after 3am. About 4:30pm, Wifey got up from her machine to go to the rest room, took a few steps and then sat back down. Uh oh, what's wrong? Wifey feels faint. That's not good. Okay, let's stop and cash out and just relax until dinner at 5pm. I walk Wifey over to the rest room, and then we head over to Sonoma Cellar. It was now about 4:45pm. After about 10 minutes (just before they were about to open their doors), Wifey tells me I have to take her back to the room. She's still feeling faint and can't eat now. So, I took Wifey back to the room and had her tucked in at 5:15pm. Got her some ice water and would check on her in an hour. Wifey wanted me to eat at Sonoma Cellar without her since I was looking forward to the bisque soup but I said I couldn't eat there without her. I would grab something else for dinner. Since we would be checking out of Sunset Station in the morning, having dinner at Sonoma Cellar would have to wait until out next trip (maybe late September, 2009).

I played some video poker for an hour and then went back to the room to check on Wifey. She was awake but still didn't feel like eating. I went back to the casino and played another hour of video poker. I had about 45 minutes to kill before the Saturday night drawing at 8:15pm so I decided it's time to head to the Roulette table for Sock Mama's bet #2. Here's his brilliant betting scheme for bet #2:

    1. Bet $10 on black.
    2. If it should win, let it ride on red.
    3. If it should win again, let it all ride on black.
    4. Should black win again, let it all ride on black again.

So... I throw down $10 on black. There's one other person playing at this table besides me. No more bets and the wheel goes around and around and stops on ................ red. Sorry, Sock Mama - you lose again. I grabbed something to eat and headed to where the drawing would be. They had some $5 blackjack tables here so I figured what the heck. I sat down with my "fast food" and the suit told me I couldn't eat at the table. Are you kidding me???? Fine, I got up walked 15 feet away and finished my dinner. I sat back down and after 30 minutes, cashed out up $100 for blackjack. Stayed for the drawing and didn't win anything. Time to head back to our room.

Day 4 Gambling Summary (Sunset Station):

    Me
    - down $500.00 (16 'wild royals')
    - down $1800.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - up $50.00 (21 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $50.00 for the trip

    Day 5 (Sunday, 5/24):

We're up at 3:45am and out the door at 4:25am. We packed up before heading down to the casino to play for a couple hours before checking out. This morning, takeout at the Sunset Cafe consisted of a fruit cup and hot oatmeal with raisins on the side for Wifey and a fruit cup and strawberry yogurt for me. I got Wifey's raisins. At 5:39am, I hit a four deuces. I needed that. We played until 6:40am so we could grab our luggage and check out. I asked the front desk to have our host review our charges and that I would touch base with her upon returning home. After checkout, we walked outside with our luggage to our waiting limo, red rose for Wifey, and a bottle of champagne. We had a nice 25 minute ride to Red Rock.

We arrive at Red Rock, tip the driver, leave our luggage with the bell desk guys, and head to the front desk. Too early to get a room so we ask for a room by the elevator. They will call my cell phone when our room is ready. Time to head to our machines. We're playing again by 7:35am. When the drink lady shows up, we start with our coffee drinks before moving up to Miller Light for Wifey and Coronas for Hubby. Later in the day, we always switch to Merlot.

At 10:11am, I hit a four deuces which was wonderful. Today was the first day on this trip that I was up for the day. Yippee! Around 11am, the front desk called my cell phone. Our room was ready. I grabbed the keys from the front desk and asked the bell desk guys to bring our luggage up in 10 minutes. I gave Wifey her room key and she headed to the room to wait for the luggage and then unpacked. In the meantime, I continued playing video poker. Wifey came back and ordered salads for lunch from Tropical Smoothie and later, we split a sandwich from Capriotti's for dinner. Early afternoon, we pick up a huge bucket of popcorn near the movie theatre. This will last us the next few days. Wifey played until 5pm and I played until 7pm before heading to the Spa. Afterwards, I headed back to our room and called it a night. Our host over at Sunset Station never called my cell phone today so I guess I didn't win any cash prizes in their secret drawing.

Day 5 Gambling Summary (Sunset Station - morning, before checkout)):

    Me
    - up $100.00 (1 'wild royal', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $1700.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $150.00 (2 'wild royals')
    - down $200.00 for the trip

Day 5 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

    Me
    - up $100.00 (16 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $1600.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - up $300.00 (10 'wild royals', 2 'four deuces')
    - up $100.00 for the trip

    Day 6 (Monday, 5/25)

We're up at 4:18am and out the door by 4:55am. I left $5 on the pillow and asked housekeeping if she could please leave extra towels, soap, lotion, and sea salt which she did after making up the room. I did this every morning at Red Rock. I stopped at the Grand Cafe for breakfast takeout. They told me there's no hot oatmeal until 6am. Okay, I'll be back at 6am. We both start playing video poker at 5am. At 6am, I went back to the Grand Cafe for hot oatmeal and fruit cup for Wifey (yes, I got her raisins) and yogurt and a fruit cup for myself. I also grabbed a large orange juice for myself and a large tomato juice for Wifey.

I could have used some more sleep but we're in Vegas - we can sleep when we get back to Austin. Where's the drink lady? Within the first hour today, I hit a four deuces. Still looking for my Royal. At 6:45am, Wifey hits her 2nd 'Royal Flush' of this trip. The entire hand just popped up at once. Wifey left her phone in the room so she had to grab mine but had to settle for a picture of her royal instead of a video to send to our daughter. I'm still looking for my first royal of this trip.

We had salads for lunch again from Tropical Smoothie and later, we ordered takeout from LBS: a burger joint. We each had their huge turkey burger which was very good. My Carpal Tunnel has been bothering me as well as my arthritic hands. I brought plenty of salonpas which are heated/medicated patches that I put on my hands. They make a huge difference and allow me to tolerate the pain.

For today's daily swipe, we each received 1000 points. About noon today, Wifey decides that we can't have any wine until one of us hits either a four deuces or a royal flush or 3pm, whichever comes first. Every time the drink lady comes by, we hear her thinking 'losers'. One of us needs to hit a four deuces so I can have my wine. At 2:31pm, I hit my 2nd four deuces of the day (first one since noon) so we can order our red wine without having to wait until 3pm. Yippee! After 3pm, we can have as much wine as we like. Wifey hits her four deuces at 5:06pm and calls it a night at 5:30pm. I hit my 3rd four deuces of the day at 6:02pm and play until 7pm. Overall, today was a good day ($ wise) for both of us.

Day 6 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

    Me
    - up $300.00 (17 'wild royals', 3 'four deuces' )
    - down $1300.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - up $600.00 (15 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces', 1 'royal flush')
    - up $700.00 for the trip

Hey, we're now only down a combined $600 this trip. We're making a comeback!

    Day 7 (Tuesday, 5/26):

We get up at 4:22am today and out the door by 4:50am. I stop for breakfast takeout at the Grand Cafe. We sat down at our machines at 5am. For today's daily swipe, Wifey got a 2 for 1 buffet voucher and I got a free buffet voucher. We played this morning until 10:55 and headed for the buffet line. They serve lunch at 11am. They also serve breakfast and since we were on line before 11am, the one buffet we had to pay for, we got for the breakfast price. That saved us a few bucks.

We got back to our machines at noon. Today, About 5pm, Wifey grabbed a couple salads for us. Wifey cashed out at 5:15pm and took her salad back to the room. I ate my salad at the machine and played until 8:20pm. The Merlots were coming fast tonight.

Day 7 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

    Me
    - down $150.00 (21 'wild royals')
    - down $1450.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $270.00 (20 'wild royals')
    - up $430.00 for the trip

We are now down (combined) $1020.0 for the trip with one more day to go.

    Day 8 (Wednesday, 5/27):

Last full day in Vegas. We're up at 4:12am and out the door 30 minutes later. I stopped at the Grand Cafe for a couple fruit cups and juices. We're back at our machines at 5am and decide to play until the breakfast buffet opens 8am. I hit a four deuces at 5:40am and again at 6:05am. After the breakfast buffet, we start playing again at 9am. Two hours later, I hit my third four deuces of the day. Neither of us did anything big the rest of the day. And since we didn't hit anything big that afternoon, we had to wait until 3pm for our first wine of the day. Drink lady, keep the Merlot coming. Wifey played until 6pm and I played until 8:15pm.

Day 8 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

    Me
    - up $50.00 (9 'wild royals', 3 'four deuces')
    - down $1400.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $580.00 (13 'wild royals')
    - down $ 150.00 for the trip

    Day 9 (Thursday, 5/28):

We're up at 4:18am and pack up for the last time. We head out at 5am. We both start playing at 5:05am and decide we can play until 10:30am before heading back for our luggage. The grand Cafe is closed for cleaning so we decide to have breakfast about 6am. Wifey heads over to Fatburger and orders a couple grilled chicken sandwiches and fries. Right after breakfast, I start ordering Merlots. I had lots of Merlots this morning since we're running out of time at Red Rock. At 7:01am, I hit a four deuces. Yes! At 10:28pm, I cash out and just waiting on Wifey. Wifey is down to $2.50 (enough for two more hands). She hits the 'deal' button and out pops four deuces. Wow, she needed that. Wifey plays one more hand and cashed out for the last time this trip.

Day 9 Gambling Summary (Red Rock):

    Me
    - up $50.00 (8 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $1350.00 for the trip
    Wifey
    - down $200.00 (7 'wild royals', 1 'four deuces')
    - down $350.00 for the trip

We head back to the room, grab our luggage and head to front desk to checkout. I asked the front desk to have our host review our charges and I would contact her upon returning home. We pick up the 11am shuttle to the airport. Our friend picked us up at the airport and we arrived home safe, sound, and exhausted.

I sent an e-mail to our host at Sunset Station letting her know that we had another wonderful but exhausting trip to Las Vegas. We managed to cycle $80,936.00 through the video poker machines over 4 days at Sunset Station. Our host had already comped us up front for three of the four nights and sent a limo for us. I asked her to review our account and see what she might be able to do to further reduce our charges based on the gambling we did at Sunset Station. Our host at Sunset Station ended up comping our fourth night so all four nights were comped and she comped all food charges (~$150) to the room, less tips.

I also sent an e-mail to our host at Red Rock. We managed to cycle $86,464.00 through the video poker machines over 4 days at Red Rock. I received an e-mail from our host at Red Rock. She was not able to comp the four night there but we were able to cash in 124, 200 points from our account to remove the $207 from our Red Rock bill. That left nothing on our Red Rock bill.

We will definitely return to both Sunset Station and Red Rock sometime in 2009.

    Total Gambling this Trip:
Wifey/Hubby combined for $167,410 ($20,926 per day average) cycled through the machines over 8 days/nights
Total combined number of hands played = 133,928 @ $1.25 per hand
Total hours played - ~209.5 hours (~26.2 hours per day @ ~ 639 hands per hour)
Royal Flush (2) - average of 1 every 66,963 hands
Four Deuces (19) - average of 1 every 7,048 hands
Wild Royal (255) - average of 1 every 525 hands

Based on my calculations, we should have hit between 2.79 and 3.3 'Royal Flushes' and between 22 and 26 'Four Deuces' this trip. That means we were shorted approx. 1 Royal Flush ($1000) and 5 Four Deuces ($1250). Oh, well...

    Total Winnings/Losses this Trip:
    Wifey: -$350.00 in casino gambling
    Hubby: -$1350.00 in casino gambling
    Combined: -$1700.00 after 8 days/nights

    Comps this Trip:
    - Sunset Station - all 4 nights comped, limo pickup at airport, plus $150 in food charges comped.
    - Red Rock - 3 of 4 nights comped. Remaining ~$207 in room/food charges taken off the bill using 124K points from our account. .

    Final Thoughts:
    - Limo is nice, especially when it comped (less tip).
    - Presidential Limo is really nice - comes with red rose for Wifey and bottle of champagne - this is perfect for moving from Sunset Station to Red Rock
    - Red Rock and Sunset Station serve pretty good Merlot
    - Wifey beat Hubby good this trip (gambling-wise)
    - 8 days/nights in Vegas is perfect for us as long as I don't have too much of a problem with Carpal Tunnel or arthritic hands

Wow, to cycle through that much money but only loose $1700.00 is amazing. I'm going to have to use your "drink lady" sign because I swear I'm in the invisible corner when I play and the waitresses don't see me.

I don't believe anyone will let you eat at a table; unless, of course, you're a big time gambler and it's a private table.

WOW, when you and wifey are getting up in Vegas, hubby & I haven't even been to bed yet when in Vegas. You are definite die-hard Deuces Wild players, not even a break to eat!

Great report. Do you have favorite machines at each resort or do you move from machine to machine?
I got to hand it to you that I would not be able to play as long at the machines as both of you played. I never thought about bringing a sign to get the cocktail waitress to come over.
