April 6-11 Highlights and reviews

We and another couple spent five days, April 6 – 11 at Monte Carlo. Below are some reviews or highlights:

Monte Carlo: Construction was all around, but not too intrusive some how. By the pool they have music at just the right volume to block most of the noise without being to loud itself. Rooms average-nice with very comfortable bed;, probably one of the better hotel beds around. NYNY’s beds are awful.

Nine Fine Irishmen: Food was barely average. Our first server was very nice, but she left and we got the most inattentive server I think I’ve ever had. A real waste of money. Went back later for the live Irish music. The music was pretty good, but seating is very scarce during the show.

Diablos: Unbelievably loud, but the food was very good. Had the beef fajitas and I would say they were the best I’ve ever had. I liked the way they were served all on one platter instead of 5 different dishes crowded around you. They have got to turn the volume down in the restaurant or people will eventually stop coming.

The Steakhouse at Camelot: What a nice treat this was. A fairly reasonable steakhouse with a nice atmosphere, great service and very good food. It couldn’t have been better. I would definitely go here again.

Dick’s Last Resort: Having eaten at the Boston location, I knew what to expect. The obnoxiousness was a little more R rated, but hey, we’re in Vegas. The obnoxiousness continued into the menu, though. Not a good value. I order the wings and ribs; the meal was five wings, a small 2 bone rib with fries: $16.99. I emailed the company and am awaiting a response. Overall, we had a good time there.

Ka: Having seen Mystere (twice), O, Zumanity, La Nouba, Corteo and Delirium, Ka was my least favorite. I knew there was a story to follow, but this was pretty much a play with a few, and very few, moments of Cirque thrown in. The overall story was hard to follow at times and it got just plain boring in some spots. I did feel that the aerial show with the man and woman flying on the hanging curtain was the best I’ve seen in any Cirque show. I’m glad I went, but I won’t repeat this one. Love is next on the list.

Margaritaville: What a great place this is. I loved the atmosphere and the food. The service was great and the menu had some unique items; not the same old tropical joint food. The margaritas were awesome.

Overall, it was a good trip. The wind was fierce and the Bellagio fountains ran half height Mon and Tue, and were completely shut down on Wed along with the Sirens of TI. The weather started the same on Thurs, but by noon, the wind died and the day was great. I will be glad when the City Center is done. I know there is always construction in Vegas, but that massive project is really almost annoying. I have to say, I liked the theme hotels they built years ago(Paris, NYNY, etc) better than the one’s going up now. They’re just big glass towers with no real appeal to me.

Well, that’s it. As always; can’t wait to go back.

 

nice report...i was curious about the monte carlo and the construction all around it. i actually cancelled reservations there about a month ago...maybe i should re do it...glad the construction wasn't too obtrusive and that ya had a great trip!

 

Thanks for the report. I agree with you on the construction and the fact that they're all glass monsters with no appeal. I too was wondering how the Monte Carlo was doing after the fire. How's the gambling there?

I remember when the Wynn was first going up, and I thought how horrible it looked! Now I love that it stands out! Though, like you, I wouldn't say so much Themed hotels, but different type of architectural style would be nice.

 

Great TR! I think I'll have to check out Diablo's on the next trip.

 

CO21 - be aware that Diablos is very loud, I mean VERY LOUD. I am emailing them to express my feelings. We'll see how they respond.

The gambling at MC was pretty much the same as before. The place is never party central, but I like to come back at the end of the day to a quieter place. That's what I loved about staying at Bellagio. We normally spend a lot of time at NYNY, but that place was pretty dull. They are in the process of replacing all the carpet in the casino, and the place has lost some of it's appeal with all the stuff so scattered. I'm sure when it's done it will be great again, but right now, i hated it.

I agree that the Wynn is a beautiful place, but it has some character. The City Center, Cosmopolitan and Echelon Place, at least in their concept drawings, all look the same to me.
