I just started playing guitar and a buddy of mine told me to apply super glue to my three finger tips to form false calluses. I'm curious if anyone has tried this and does it work and if its safe? Thanks VMBers......

Probably shouldn't touch the guitar until it dries either

I have never heard that one, but I guess it would work. I used a small piece of electrical tape once when my finger was too sore to practice. :)

But part of the fun of learning the guitar is watching those calluses develop.

Dude - Just play... Your Finger Tips getting sore is Part of the Experience.
At first they will be Tender and they will Crack and Peel but over time they
will Toughen up... So Grab your Guitar and Play already!

It's safe, but you need those real calluses, so it's counterproductive.

    Breeze -
Funny thing... Everyone thinks John said that.
He didn't... Ringo said it. Believe it or not, It's True!

Just play through the pain the first couple of weeks and you will build the real calluses, plus the super glue will completely reduce your sensitivity while you are learning.

Thanks everyone. I'll take your advice and do it the old school way.

This. I practice classical guitar and to properly work through fretting technique you need to know how to delineate out the notes w your own finger tips and figure out what works for you and what doesn't (in terms of finger tip pressure and angles) applying glue to prevent callouses is counterintuitive in the long run

I tried to learn guitar back in school, but if I'd used super glue I probably would've stuck to it!

Get your guitar set up with the lowest " action" possible.
This will help you a great deal.
My electrics are all set really low -
my acoustic is a cheap student model -
I can't lower the action anymore - so it STILL burns my fingertips when
I play a lot of lead runs on it...........my fingertips are sore right now !
And I've been playing for 40 yrs !
For 40 yrs I've been saying "I need to buy a good acoustic"
Keep playing ! Good luck.......keep it fun !
