    My Trip Report

Me: Mid fifties guy who goes to Vegas 2-3 times a year to play as much VP as I can stand, usually solo but sometimes with my husband. This trip was solo, 3 nights at Four Queens, 3 at Main Street Station, and 2 at Westgate. The phrase "dumpster fire" pretty much sums up the results. I'll give some brief notes and thoughts, as well as some pictures of the highlights. This is mostly $0.25 action, so no high rolling going on, but there are a couple of impressive VP porn pictures to be included.

Four Queens: I was for years getting the 3 nights/$200 freeplay offers, but during my most recent stays there I haven't given as much play as before, so this was a BOGO room offer with $40 freeplay. My goal was to try and increase my play in the hopes of better future offers. Arrived from Boston 9/27 on an early flight, took the WAX downtown and was checked in by 11. I much prefer a quiet room, and the only south tower/high floor/even number room (those are the ones away from Fremont) were smoking. Beats not being able to sleep so I'll take it. This was a renovated room (first one for me) and as others have commented they could have done a better and more thorough job--and why didn't they change out those awful drapes?

Of course I started out full of optimism--to paraphrase from "Moonstruck", that first hundred into the 10/7 progressive has all the promise of the moonlight in a martini. I had visions of a great start, and then of moving up to dollars or maybe some 10 play ultimate X, and hitting some big hands. Not to be. Over the three days I am there I proceed to lose $1525, mostly on the 10/7, with some time on the 9/7DB in Chicago Brewing where I eat most of my meals. I also mixed in some $0.50 9/6 jacks to boost my coin in. Best hand I got was this on the progressive 9/7 DB in Chicago Brewing: IMG_20160928_132844_814.jpg

Over my stay I earned 2846 points on $24600 coin in (which, BTW, translates to a 93.8% overall return--ouch). Before checking out I checked with a host who agreed to cover the room nights. He said I would most likely be getting some better offers, but they do use a 3 trip average so it might take another visit or 2. FYI, the food comps worked as follows. I started with $191 left from previous trips, had 5 meals at Chicago Brewing and 1 at Hugo's Cellar, and ended up with $237 upon checking out.

MSS: In all my many trips to Vegas over maybe 20 years now, I have always stayed at MSS. This time, they were booked (even a couple of months ahead when I made the reservation) so I was in the Cal for the first time ever. I asked for a room in the west tower, and with the elevator stop at mezzanine and the walkway to MSS, these rooms are just as close to the MSS casino as the MSS rooms are. Room size and quality were equivalent to MSS as well.

Played a couple of sessions on the 10/7DB with lunch at the Triple 7 in between. Lost on the first but won $100 on the second. It was time for a nap, and then I was planning on some ten play BP later on, glad I had the $200 cashout from a (finally) winning session. Got up from my nap and was ready to go play, and discovered that I didn't have the $200 after all. I guess I was so used to losing I forgot to take it. Asked at the cage if it had been turned in, but no dice. Doh, what an idiot. Talking to a floorperson later, he said a lot of times homeless folks will look for leftover vouchers, which oddly made me feel better that perhaps someone who needs it more than i do found it. Being that stupid still burns, though.

10 play was interesting. I loaded it with $300 at first, then played it down to near zero and put in another $100. Then I started hitting some quads, and then to my surprise was dealt the 2nd best hand you can get: IMG_20160930_221101_644.jpg

Later on hit for another dealt quad: IMG_20161001_240238_204.jpg

Walked away from there up $800, and feeling better about the whole trip.

Until the next night. On some VP players group, I remember someone once describing 10 play as follows: When she is good, she is very, very good, and when she is bad she is horrid. In less than an hour, I was down $600. Oh well.

Ended up leaving MSS down $225, which isn't bad for $40795 coin in.

Westgate: This was my third stay here, and I have mixed feelings about it. I like the rooms, and I like the variety of different FPVP games they have (I play loose deuces and two pair joker wild). But, I just get a weird vibe from the place. Drink service is really spotty, and, for the second time out of only 3 visits, they were having major computer issues which made for long lines and made it impossible to track my coin in.

From MSS, I walked up to the Bonneville transit center and took the 108 to the Westgate. Checked in and hit the loose deuces. This is a very volatile game, so I was only going to risk $300 before giving up. Lost $250 and went up to take a nap. Came back down to "my" machine, and noticed that someone had cashed out for ~$670 or so. Got the LD going with my remaining $50 stake, and noticed that the hand just played was 4 deuces, obviously from the guy who had cashed out. Now, I am not really superstitious, and I am trained in science and understand the math and probabilities involved in VP, but there was this voice inside screaming "Change machines! Deuces won't hit here ever again!" I didn't listen. Maybe 20 hands later got this: IMG_20161003_193108_161.jpg

Time to switch to 2PJW. Played a bunch of it over the next couple of days and in spite of a few decent hands lost steadily. IMG_20161004_083152_568.jpg IMG_20161004_150825_311.jpg

My first night I threw a hundred into a spinpoker machine with 9/7 DB and cashed out up $100 thanks to a quik set of aces.

The next night, tried the same thing with this result: IMG_20161004_224716_472.jpg

Thanks to spinpoker, I ended up +$200 at Westgate, but due to their computer issues don't know what my coin in was. When it was time to get to the airport for the redeye home, took the 108 there. It was a Wednesday evening, and there was no one in line for security--I've never seen it so empty.

Overall, I was down ~1500, not bad for a week without a royal. I was definitely over a royal cycle with 48363 hand played downtown, and may thousands more at Westgate. I'll be back this winter for more.

Nice report! And dealt Aces acts like a quarter royal there, right? ;) Nice pull on Loose Deuces too!

But 2 pair joker poker? You're a glutton for punishment! I can't help but cheat with my phone on that game. Very, very difficult to play well.

I agree with tringlomane above. Those 4 deuces were a beautiful sight!
Thanks for sharing your TR, Peter!

Great pics of vp hands. That 10-play AAAA-fest was spectacular. Hope you had a great time...guess so if you're going back in a few months.
