So I have never really played VP other than to get a drink here and there. From most of the low roller trip reports I have read it almost seems like when your playing small stakes(.25) vp your almost playing to break even or hopefully a small win for the trip? Is this true???

Am I way off here? I'm trying to talk myself into playing some vp next trip but having a hard time justifying it when I can sit at a poker table and actually make money, see tvs and still drink for free.

Video poker hypnotizes me after a few minutes. cant stand it. The cards start to blur into the same cards it seems. maybe that actually the way it is. I find it boring. Sounds silly but i will take some flashing lights over that any day.

The slots vs video poker argument will never be solved. Either side doesn't understand the other.

If you are good at poker and enjoy it, why do anything else?

No, you're right, we sit there hoping to break even...until we hit a premium hand. I find you lose money slower at VP than most other casino games. Bottom line is play what you want

My issue with poker is if I don't have time to play a 4-5 hour session I find myself playing bad and trying to make things happen. It's hard to play that long when on a trip with my wife normally.

I think poker and sports betting are your only legit shot at winning on a semi consistent basis,, the rest I play to pass the time and consider getting my original buyin back a win however comps are easily acquired downtown playing machines so it's probably close to a wash honestly..If playing online exclusively sports betting and poker is way to go

I've noticed the same effect! Usually happens around my 20th drink of the day....I wonder what causes it?

Then that's a different discussion. I can only play poker when going solo. With someone, you need to play something together. How about learning BJ strategy and playing that together?

I agree except we play $1x5 per hand, breaking even plus comps is good with me. House still has an advantage.

Lol ya my wife doesn't gamble. When we hang out during the day we just eat and walk around and hang out. I usually get a few hours here and there to gamble then I can usually go out from midnight to 3-4am

Each to his/her own. VP played 'right' gives more steady returns with the hope of the flush and big return but takes concentration. Slots offer slightly worse return, minimal skill but can still give solid returns and the 'hail Mary' win.....at some point, over a number of trips and a number of hours the Casino will win. Okay what you enjoy, take as much money as you wish to enjoy spending and take your chances! I play a bit of both and have fun trying to chase my dreams....!

Video poker, generally, has the same house hold as a good BJ game or the best bets on the craps table...but a lower variance which means smaller swings of winning and losing. They all come in about 0.5% house edge. Roulette is about a 5.25% house edge. Slots are about 10.00% house edge.
So, you will lose at all of them over time. The key is whether your comps and freebies can overcome your losses; over time.
OP: The answer to your question is, "Yes." You play $.25 vp for the free drinks, love of the game and, if you're with someone, the companionship. If you're a good poker player then you will do better at the poker table rather than any of these games, but you can't share that experience with your wife. Also, you have to know the strategy for the video poker game you're playing. For instance 9/6 Jacks or Better will have a different strategy than 9/6 Double Double Bonus which will have different strategies from every other game title.

Ya slots were never even an option. I may spend 100$ in slots on a 3 day trip at most

If you're playing poker, I assume you're playing on the strip? If that's the case, the VP paytables won't be that great, especially at the bars. Its something different, and bartop drink service is great (floor service varies) but depending on the game and how fast you play, you can swing more than you think. Losing $100 in an hour playing quarter 8/5 DDB (96.79% max return) when things go bad (i.e. no quads or better) isn't unheard of.

That was such a treat to play at the Rio bars last month, even if I went quadless while playing. I've been so used to playing game kings when I want my beer lately...haha

I have played alot of online poker, sometimes 20 tabling O8B, but with the US not allowed online anymore all the action for me is outta Euroland which is a tough schedule to play and playing that way for yrs I couldn't single table live. Last trip I strictly played DSTP VP for the weekend looking for a Royal Flush or premium hand. I didn't find the monster I was looking but managed enough coin-in for some comps.[IMG]
