we are debating either a later flight on Friday night(arrive at 8-9 pm) or early Saturday flight (arrive at 11am). question is how busy is McCarron Friday evening? arrived every day or night besides Friday night and don't know what to expect at rental car etc.

I flew into McCarron at 830pm on a friday in June and it wasn't bad considering I flew in from the dumpster fire called ATL

We have long ago given up on renting a car, but I can tell you every single time we fly in, the airport seems to be about the same. Busy.

What would be more of an issue is getting to your hotel on friday night at 10pm or whenever you get there. Traffic galore.

If you fly in saturday morning, you can save one night's hotel rate, which are high on fridays and saturdays. Some hotels may be less open to Saturday arrivals but that seems to be less of an issue than it used to be.
Everything will be easier early Saturday morning, when most people are still asleep. Drop your bags off with the bell captain and they will keep them until you can check in.

After over 100 trips, I still can't say with certainty when it's more or less busy. I'll guess, however, that Saturday morning will be less crowded than Friday night. Last month I arrived on a very quiet Saturday morning, but my preference is always morning versus evening. I wouldn't let perceived crowds at the airport determine when you go.

This was our experience in February when we arrived Friday night about 1030. Airport was fine, shuttle to car rental was fine, the strip was a parking lot. (I knew better but still took the strip) Check in at Rio was no better.

I am sure you already slapped yourself for taking the strip. Staying at RIO gave you so many options. Ah.... to be young and smart again..... LOL!

It sounds like you are not talking flight reservations, so you have the call. I would come Sat. If it is more about travel hassle.

I like arriving in the morning because you get better room selection. If you arrive late evening most of the rooms are booked in already and you can get a crappy room. "Sorry, we only have xxxx rooms left." xxxx= smoking, low floor, no view, king only, end of long hallway...or whatever it was that was important to you. Checking in at noon you can usually get your request met.

Sorry to hear you say that about ATL. My home airport for 40 years and I guess I just know the "ropes" to get around.
I've been in and out of many of airports in the USA and by far I think ATL is great for the number of flights they have each and everyday.
I hope your next experience out of ATL will be a better experience-----

Friday is going to be busy at the airport because you have a lot of people leaving to avoid the higher weekend rates and a lot of people just coming in for the weekend. Not sure if Sat will be much slower.

I would agree. Pushing two million miles and ATL is still a well run airport. Not only does it do a great job, but it is the busiest airport in the world. No big complaints here.

Check-in at that time on a Friday night at the hotel could be long.

If it were me and my trip was relatively short I would opt for Friday. If my trip was longer and time isn't as much of an issue I'd at least consider Saturday morning.

    Have a great trip!!!
