None are as high quality. I really like the Downtown Grand.

Depends what you are looking for. And who comps. Basic rooms in GN Carson are really nothing special. GN has been reported to have worse odds than any downtown. On TripAdvisor , MSS is actually rated higher(first downtown) than GN. Probably because it is cheaper and no resort fee.
Several on here will rate where they stay downtown higher than GN

The rooms at Downtown Grand are very nice, and clean! They probably cost less than the rooms you have to pay a high upgrade for at Golden Nugget. The standard rooms at GN are out of date.

Assuming "nicest" means most luxurious / "strip like" then choices after GN are:
    • Downtown Grand
    • The D
After that theres a significant fall off.

EDIT: Theres tons of very nice, serviceable hotels downtown, but i'm only talking about "luxury"

The suites at the Golden Gate are great and often cheaper than rooms at GN.

I would put the cabana suites at the El Cortez as an also ran rooms wise. Asking a resort property only the DTG comes close to the Nug at this time.

MSS has no resort fee? I thought the Cal was the only DT property with no resort fee.

Fremont, The Cal and MSS all do not have resort fees. Their rooms are are pretty plain and can be small but usually very clean.

In addition to the 3 boyd casinos, the 4 queens doesn't have a resort fee either. As for room size, I am comfortable at the Cal and MSS. The fremont rooms IMHO are a little too small for my tastes but it is mostly because they only have valet parking and I usually rent a car when I'm in vegas.

I stayed at the Plaza and the rooms are nice but I would rather stay at MSS or the Cal if I had a choice of all the rooms downtown. I never had any allegiance to the GN or DTG and I usually give my play to MSS. I think the room size at the Plaza is similar to MSS and the Cal IMHO.

The Nugget is starting to show it's age and is losing it luster. The Downtown Grand has lapped the GN on the 'nice' scale.

    GN
    DTG
    Pick 'em

Since the GN raised their resort fee to $25 I have become a conscientious objector. That's strip level. But it still offers the most strip-like experience.

Actually, the MSS rooms are one of biggest basic room downtown. They list them as 400SF but that is being a little generous. Also all rooms have a fridge (also Cal).Fremont doesn't have fridge but you can get one for $15 per stay (not night)

I think nhanna was referring to the Fremont having small rooms.

I agree, I like the free fridges at MSS and Cal and the free wall safes too.

We found the GN to have a very unfriendly vibe. The walk to our room was a trial, we battled our way through the screaming kids from the pool, then ran the gauntlet past the timeshare bunch. At night we had to wait on the security lady, who demanded to see our room keys but did not want to stop chatting with her pal.
Then when you add, poor odds, downright rude ladies on the player's desk & the snootiest receptionists in Vegas, I have to wonder why anyone stays there.

The essential difference between GN rooms and those at other DT hotels is size. The lowest grade Carson Tower room is bigger than what you find elsewhere, unless you get a suite. Those rooms might be a bit dated (which doesn't bother me at all) but GN maintains the place well.

Downtown Grand is a terrific hotel with nice rooms, but otherwise it's kind of dead. GN is kind of the opposite -- too crowded a lot of the time.

I love The D, but the standard rooms there are pretty small and kind of over-rated if you ask me. They are nice enough though, and priced very competitively, so it's kind of a go-to place downtown for me, by default. I should splurge on a corner king next time I go -- it's still very reasonable.

Carson Tower rooms are listed at 364 SF. MSS rooms are listed at a generous 400 SF (I think more like 380 SF)
