Field bets pay even money, even though it should pay 5 to 4. Even with the 2 to 1 on Snake Eyes and 2 or 3 to 1 on boxcars, the house edge is too much against you.

Think about it. They call these sucker bets. the casinos themselves call them that indicating you are a sucker if you play them. Why do you suppose they would do that? Its not like they are ion your side. their job is to take as much of your money that they can.

Why would they actively discourage you from placing a bet with a big house edge?

they dont want you to play it becasue they get paid better from player playing the way they are told. giant casino are built off of the pursuit of perfect play. not sucker bets.

I think that the real problem with the field is that it gets decided with every roll of the dice. Where if you make a pass line or place bet it may stay there for a long time before it is won or lost. So I think the amount of bets per hour would almost be like playing by yourself at a blackjack table.

Want the best way to bet the field?

Here's what Sam Grafstein calls THE WORLD'S BEST FIELD BETTING PLAY* (*AT LEAST THE BEST I'VE EVER SEEN) from the single best book ever written on craps, The Dice Doctor Revised and Expanded.

What follows is taken verbatim (including all of the bad punctuation and odd capitalizations, etc.) from the 2001 edition of the book, which was essentially unchanged from the original 1981 version. It's since been republished with some serious editing and the addition of some useless charts and tables, but it remains the best book ever on every aspect of craps. (They haven't changed this play, either, and why would they? It's still the World's Best.)

So here it is - the world's best field betting play:

Because HUMAN NATURE that includes ignorance, laziness, or inability to count from 1 to 10, are the main reasons why so many dice players try to SECOND GUESS the field.

For the House, it is NOT ignorance, laziness OR simple arithmetic. It is SALESMASHIP!! There is more layout space devoted to the field bet, than to most of the proposition bets COMBINED. (In spite of my calling the field bet a weak bet, I have seen wins of $25,000 and even $50,000 made in field betting.)

One FIELD BETTOR at Binion’s Horseshoe Casino in Downtown Vegas, was at the bar opposite the crap tables. (Drinks are now 75 cents at Binion’s.) Every so often, this field bettor would take 10 YELLOW ($1,000) CHIPS and bet them on the field for ONE roll. (Win or lose.) He would return to the bar for another 75 cent drink. How did he wind up with his $10,000 bets? I don’t know. I got sick to my stomach just watching!! I was told later that he was at one time up $150,000 and then blew it all back . . . PLUS.

I have in my time as a dealer and as a player, seen more than 20 consecutive field numbers rolled. I have also, during the same times seen MORE than 20 consecutive numbers rolled, without even a SINGLE field number.

In my Method of Play for the Field Bettor, should YOU run into 20 consecutive rolls of the dice without a single field number showing, you would lose PEANUTS. Should you on the other hand, WIN 20 or more consecutive field bets, then take my word for it MR. or MRS., that starting with a $2 bill, you could wind up beating the joint for serious money. (And I do mean thousands.)

THE BETTING RULES FOR THIS FIELD PLAY

    (1) Finds a casino that pays 2 to 1 on the two aces and 3 to 1 on the two sixes. (These are the payoffs on field bets in downtown Las Vegas.) If in Northern Nevada where they pay triple on two aces, then just play the same way. FORGET THIS PLAY, (or any other field betting play) if you can’t get these payoffs. (LET THEMGO TO WORK!!)

    (2) Your starting betting stakes are as follows: The $2 bettor requires a betting stake of $100. This allows him to make 50 starting bets of $2. The $5 bettor requires a betting stake of $250, for 50 starting bets of $5.

    (3) Place your betting stake in the front portion of the chip rack. The rear portion will be used for locking up any net winning bets.

    (4) You bet $2 on the shooter rolls a FIELD number. You now have $4, $6, or $8, depending on whether the field number roll paid even, two or three to one. You PARLAY or let ride the entire amount. Should the shooter roll a second field number, your parlay would be complete. Again, depending on whether the second half of you parlay paid even, two or three to one, your completed parlay would total anywhere from $8 to $32. Your NEXT parlay would start with $3. Following is the approximately 50% increase in your STARTING bets: $2-3-5-7-10-15-25-35-50-75-125-175-250-350-500-750-1000-etc.

So that's Sam's method for the field. One thing that he doesn't say explicitly is that at any time that you lose a bet, either the first or second of your parlay sequence, your next bet is the minimum bet amount, as determined by your buy-in amount (1/50 of your buy-in). Also - you won't find a $2.00 crap game in Las Vegas anymore, so adjust your minimum bet and bankroll accordingly. If you chose to play this method at a $10.00 table, then your buy-in is $500.00 and you proceed up the betting chart from $10.00 to $15.00 for your second parlay, etc. (Sam originally wrote his book when there were 25-cent crap games in Vegas, so many of his plays in the 1981 edition seem quaint today. Hey! Some of the amounts haven't been changed in the latest edition, either. Shame on them!)

    Good Luck, and Best Wishes!

While you are entirely correct, Sam makes that argument that on a field bet that pays 3X on the 12, the house edge is 2.78% against the player, yet we see players placing the 5 & 9 (at a 4% edge) and buying the 4 & 10 (at a 4.7% edge) all the time and they are hardly ever held in the same contempt that pass line bettors hold field bettors.

    Just an observation.

I think if the vig on the 4/10 is paid upon a win it is 1.67% HA

Agreed. But in the words of Chevy Chase, "it was my understanding that there would be no math..."

but at least a place or buy bet stays up so you get multiple shots at winning
versus the single roll in the field

that said, i play the field from time to time
    call me a sucker
it's just a gut feel thing

Odds fiends would correctly tell you to only play baccarat, pass or don't pass with odds, blackjack (correctly) or maybe a very few video poker machines like 9/6 Jacks or Better. I was taught by friends to play only those games. And yet there are all kinds of casino games with odds no better than the Field and people are playing them. When I'm tired and need a brain break, I love to wander over and play a little 3 card poker-and, yes, I make the 'sucker' pair plus bet.

I think a case could be made that any of us playing in a casino are 'suckers.' Those beautiful buildings weren't built because all of us went in there and won a bunch of money.

I say bet the Field if you want, and use any money management system you want. I'm a sucker enough to have glorious fun betting 'good' and sucker bets alike. I don't bet the Field, but I love to put a few bucks on the hard ways while I'm playing. Jeez, what a sucker I am.

I have no problem with filed bettors unless they are late betting. This seems to be the case a lot with field only players. I play a lot of crappy bets on the dice felt, hardways and always the features, so who am I to say how anyone else should bet. Just don't slow the game down.

Lol, no. A drunken moron on tilt gets the same odds on the field bet as an astrophysicist.

I never understood the last second bettor. And as said above it often happens on the field. I guess there aren't too many bets you can make yourself other than come and field. But those crazy late betting field guys drive me nuts.

Some guy named Joshua also wrote an article on field bets. Here is the complete text of the article:

    "Greetings Professor Falken."

"A strange game. The only winning move is not to play."

I will use a "field-milker" strategy from time to time.
    It works like this:
$5 field bet...it hits. Leave $5 out there, it hits. Leave $10 out there - it hits. Leave $10 out there - it hits. Leave $20 out there, etc...
Always pay yourself first on the first hit at any bet level. Double-up after paying yourself.
When it goes down, start over at $5.
Much of the time, this play nets me nothing, but it cost me nothing either, so long as that first roll is a field roll.
But a few times, it has made me a nice bit of "bonus" money... best ever was something like $155 I made doing this (cumulative for the run, starting with $5). That was 9 consecutive field rolls, going down on the 10th roll with $80 out there.
Of course, the dice have no memory, so it's just sheer luck when a run like that happens. That's ok...so long as the first one hits, all of those bets are "free". If you hit 3 in a row, you've made money (+$10).
