While in Vegas, I stopped to fill out a raffle ticket for a new Corvette outside of Caesars'. I really don't want a Corvette. If I won, I would trade it for a really good Jeep Grand Cherokee.

Last night I get a call. It's some doofus from Indian Springs, NV asking if I am the one who filled out the raffle ticket. I reluctantly said yes. He went through all kinds of verification stuff and then announced that I had won 4 comped nights at either Excalibur or Luxor. RIGHT ON THE FABULOUS LAS VEGAS STRIP, he gushes. My radar went up right then and there.

He said but before you can claim your prize, there are a few questions he needed to ask.

Right away, I said "I decline". He says, "Whaaat?" I said "I decline". Nothing else. He sounded very flustered and ended the call.

I know this had to be some sort of scam.

I filled the ticket out at a small tent next to Caesars' where the Absinthe show is.

Anyone else get one of these?

Pretty much anytime you can sign up to win something, there is a reason.

Time share, health club, etc. No idea if they ever give away the prize, but in the meantime, they get lots of names, etc. to see stuff.

I saw that thing at Caesars and wondered what the deal was. I am amazed they are allowing it there.

Yep. That sounds about right. There's raffles for John Deere tractors, 4-night, 5-day mini vacations, you name it. It's not new for timeshares however, maybe just new to the strip.

Same exact thing happened to me a few years back but the drawing for the car was being held in a local mall, not Vegas. Never even thought about a timeshare pitch until the call came to the house.

I remember seeing that tent outside Caesars on my last 2 trips so it's been there a while. The first time I passed by it the folks working it were actively approaching people so I figured it would be easier just to put the crowd between us and them and just stay away. In my head I want to tell them all to just F-off and let me enjoy my vacation but unfortunately it always seems to come out as "no thank you" which to them means "able to be convinced so try harder".

I figure every free drawing ticket you fill out will result in a sales pitch by someone. I never fill them out.

I won a mini barbecue grill from the grocery store via a raffle, and I didn't get a sales pitch, but yeah, I'm with vic on this, be careful what you wish for.

Locally I see win a free lunch scams where you drop your business card in a fishbowl. Sometimes it tells you that the drawing is sponsored by a company and that you'll get a sales pitch prior to your free meal. I'm leery of dropping a business card in a fish bowl these days. Likewise you can often tell when the drawing is being used to sell something, although not always.

My rule is simple - if they require my phone number, then I won't be entering to win whatever it is they're using for bait. I'll give them an e-mail address and my name... & if that's enough - then sure - why not? I already have to delete half of my e-mails anyway, so what's a few more?
PS - did y'all know that young Russian & Asian girls are wanting to meet me...constantly?

Breeze, you should have stayed on the line to see what kind of questions they will be asking you. Yeah, we all know the questions will probably be more personal or just a ruse to get you to see their product but I would be curious to see anyway, then I would say "no thanks".

I was lured with these comped nights once, over 15 years ago I went to a timeshare in Honolulu and they gave me 4 free nights at the Flamingo. They also served dinner - basically a paper plate with rice and salad and a chicken they probably picked up at a fast food joint. Was all right, I was there for about an hour and a half to listen to them try to get me to buy a timeshare in Kona or someplace. Not too bad because I used the 4 night comp and enjoyed my stay at the Flamingo for free (this was before resort fees so it was great).

As others have mentioned, I would listen as long as I don't have to give out my information but there have also been scams that try to get to your accounts, ssn, etc. so it would have been interesting to see what kind your call was.

That car raffle one has been around for a while.
    Feel for that one.
I tend to avoid raffles in general.
I wonder if anyone actually wins the car.

There is no such thing as a free lunch. I never fill those things out. I did when I was young and naïve.

    Boy did I learn fast.

That was a good move, Breeze.

I would advise against writing off all raffles/contests as timeshare scams, because I enter contests as a hobby and win things all the time. In fact, I'm about to spend Labor Day Weekend at the Tropicana as a result of one of those contests. My advice-- every contest is offered with the specific intent of promoting a business/ad campaign, or generating traffic for something. A company, a special event, whatever. If you can't tell what it is, it's likely a timeshare or similar. For example, as anyone who listens to the Highway Vibe radio station between LA and Vegas may recall, they often run commercials that sound like a standard radio call-in contest but feature an absurdly easy trivia question and don't explicitly identify the sponsor or the prize (merely "show tickets"). We tried that once, and it ended up being a timeshare pitch. Reading the fine print on the entry form is usually the quickest way to figure it out.

On a side note I hope everyone knows to use a side email account for things like message boards, contests, purchases online etc. Like Yahoo,Gmail etc. And use their main one from your Internet company for banking, and family/friends..All the junk mail I get is to the yahoo account I have. And Yahoo sends most of it to spam.delete them every now and again..all the same Viagra and Asian/Russian girls..Ten or more daily..

On our second trip back in 2009, there was a raffle to win Criss Angel's Corvette near the main entrance of the Luxor. My wife insisted on filling out two tickets, one for me and one for her. Several months later, I get the call congratulating me because I had just won a 3 night stay at the Luxor. Since I was already starting to get room comp offers, I told the person I wasn't intersted unless it included RT airfare. Of course, it didn't, and I quickly hung up. The good news is that I was finally able to convince my wife to stop filling out those raffle entries!!!

Some time back my dad entered one of these things. He gets the call that he's won a color television ("color television" being the term, no details) with the rub that he needs to come to Myrtle Beach to pick it up. Well, he also has to sit through some time-share pitch. Dad, who loves a good scrap, rides these fellas all the way. No, not signing up for a time-share, but as soon as you're done I'll collect that TV you promised. Indeed he got the "color television". Don't know if they still make them or not, but it was a handheld television with a screen of a few inches...kind of like the ones you take to the stadium or the racetrack. Pop just didn't have the heart to tell them, up front, we already have property at Myrtle Beach.
