Anyone got a status update on the remodel at the Cal?

Thinking of staying there for 3 nights in September and hoping the rooms have been remodeled?

Would you say the rooms are better or worse than those at MSS - which in my opinion are in desperate need of a remodel. The beds there on our last stay were not good.

    Any and all advice welcomed!

    Cheers,
    Kelly

Rooms look renovated (at least the one I am sitting in now ) the casino bar is done and now the area walled off is from the players club to the ramp.

I stayed there last december and I like the rooms and the beds. I don't know if they were renovated in December yet, but there was a lot of construction going on when I went.

From what I understand they are finishing up renovations on the first floor. When they are done they will start to work on the 2nd floor remodel. Not sure when they will be working on the upper floors. The rooms are decent, I think they remodeled the rooms within the past 10 to 12 years so not sure when they will be remodeled next. Also not sure if or when they will be replacing the beds but I found them to be firm and satisfactory.

    Thanks all for the advice.

We've decided to stay at Gold Coast instead - they came up with a better offer!

We'll be sure to visit the Cal while we are there though!

    Cheers,
    Kelly

I was at the Cal from Aug 1 thru Aug 4. The public restroom near the Market Street Café is closed. The Redwood is closed. The zig zag entrance line for the Market Street café is boarded off near the Redwood and the line to enter the Market Street Café is now a short, straight line near the cashier. I was curious how the entrance line would form should it become busy but it was never busy during the times I went to eat. BTW, I ate the oxtail soup 3x's while I was there. The pool is open. The area where the hosts office was located is now boarded up and signs saying it will become the future sports book. While I was there a lot of jack hammering was ongoing on the casino floor.

The oxtail soup is still on my Vegas to-do list.

Ate at Redwood at Pullman last week. Hostess said they are scheduled to reopen at Cal around beginning of October. Currently, through Aug, food book coupons are good at MSS buffet with no surcharge (except seafood night)

I am a Boyd fan, and specifically love the CAL. I am not sure of some of the reasoning for some of the changes, i.e, closing Pasta Pirate, removing the popular snack bar, etc.

Four more sleeps and then nine sleeps at the CAL. Will be interesting to see the changes.....trying to keep an open mind.

"Open mind", very important. I'm a Boyd fan too. I've never stayed at the Cal, but I really like Sam's Town and MSS.

Make sure you let management know you are unhappy with the closings. Also tell them that you won't eat at the new restaurant since you loved the pirate more (if you aren't planning to eat at the new restaurant).

I loved that snack bar and will miss it no matter what they try to do. Supposedly they moved some of the dishes over to the new Asian restaurant and the market st. café but it just isn't the same.

My sisters and son and our friend, Henry from Hawaii, were talking loudly last year while at the tables about the closing of Pasta Pirate and changing it to the Noodle House. We kept the conversation going at length. We announced we all were going to boycott the Noodle House. And we also, kind of jokingly, said none of us would even walk by it or look in that direction.

My son loved the bento box from the snack bar.....swears it saved him many nights. It was always so quick and convenient to grab a quick bite. Even if the Market Street Cafe has a bento box, etc., on the menu the line can be horrible at certain times of the evening.

Oh, no problem questioning some of the decisions. I also am really faithful on filling out the surveys after our trips. I am good about noting any dislikes. I also am really good about mentioning employees names who have gone above and beyond the call of duty.

I very much agree. And yes, moving the menu items to the Cafe doesn't do it for us either. Nothing like just stopping at the Snack Bar for a quick bite without having to wait in line to be seated, orders taken, served, etc. Pasta Pirate was a favorite, and as far as I am concerned the best value of any decent restaurant around town. We have yet to eat at the Noodle House, and don't ever plan to.

Yup, I will never eat at the noodle house. Whenever I walk by that place it isn't that busy. To me it will only be a matter of time before that place closes (maybe in a year or two) since it probably isn't paying for itself. Their prices are expensive and many Hawaii people won't pay that kind of money to eat there when they can go to the Market St. Café instead. I'm hoping that maybe they can open a couple of take out places in that area after it closes. Bring back the old lanai restaurant and maybe a small Chinese take out restaurant or something.

The Market St. Café has it's own problems. Long lines certain times of the evening. They charge if you want to make a take out plate. Limited selection from the old snack bar.

I loved going to the snack bar. quick service, never a long line and free take out plates. Prices were reasonable and they had a good selection of menu items. I usually ate there more than any other place when I stayed at the Cal or MSS. I only ate at the Market St. Café for the prime rib dinner and oxtail soup.

Too bad, now I go elsewhere to eat and seems like I go to in n out more.

I loved that snack bar. The food was ok and fast to get. Poor management decision. I wonder what happened to the workers as there was a woman from Louisiana I always chatted with while paying. The new lighting in the Cal looks cheesy as hell.

BTW, 1/2 of the counter seating near the entrance of the Market St Cafe is boarded up, where it used to have about 10 seats it now only has 5 seats. On a side note did the tall black guy who was the cook at the snack bar get relocated to another cook position inside the Cal? I haven't seen him after the snack bar closed. I hope the Cal didn't lay him off.

Cal's new sports book photos taken on 8/29/16. Location is street level where the host's desk used to be located. I had taken a video but I don't know how to post a video so pics are the only thing I can do.
