    My Trip Report

On June 15, I was informed by my employer that I had 60 days remaining on payroll, and that there wouldn't be a job for me as of Monday, August 15. The way our place works is, you have to come to work for the next 45 days. We pay on the 1st and 15th, rather than every two weeks. After that, you get one 15 day pay period where you don't have to come in. It's their way of saying, "Hey we know it's a tough break. Spend that time doing...whatever you want. Look/interview for jobs. Sit on your couch and ponder what to do next. Whatever you think is best."

Well, what I wanted to do with that extra time was...go to Vegas. Go to Las fuc*in' Vegas, man. While on payroll, and before my 4 months of severance/unused vacation time kicked in, which would be provided after August 15 once I was off payroll.

So I went about a job search. I didn't have time to shoot for the sun the moon and the stars. I just wanted lateral compensation at minimum, so I could land something for which I was already highly qualified from doing that exact work.

Earlier today, I got the call. Slightly higher pay. Slightly lower employee contribution to health care. A better 401(k) matching program. Four weeks of vacay right off the bat. When could I start?

AUGUST 15 I answered. Keep in mind, I had already claimed a comped room at Bally's for this coming Sunday through Thursday, figuring it would cost me nothing if I cancelled. And I'd already cashed in SWA points for the flight, with no Early Bird, so if I cancelled that I'd only lose $11.20 on TSA fees and get all my points back. And I kinda maybe did the same thing with a NOLA comp and free flight for the following Sunday, returning home on Thursday, August 11.

So basically, I get to go to Vegas while still on payroll. I get to go to New Orleans while still on payroll. I get to start my job on the very day I get direct deposit of my final paycheck (Aug. 15th), plus I get to pick up my severance check/unused vacay check the very next day, since my new office is close enough to my old one to swing by over lunch.

Goal? Win my severance package as what amounts to a prize, and not even have to fund one single moment of unemployment. GOAL ACCOMPLISHED. #wintheseverance

Nice. This is probably the only lay off story that has actually brought a smile to my face. Have a great time in Vegas and best wishes with the new job.

    Nice!
our company did the same thing with a mass layoff, 2weeks+unused vacation..a lot of the people found other jobs, so they got a decent little bonus (I was almost one of them, except i got to stay; and I probably COULDN'T have found another job because I'm an asshole :kill:

Last time I was laid off I didn't have a job lined up but went to Vegas anyway. Needed the break to clear my mind.

    Glad you found something quickly.

As Hannibal Smith would say "I love it when a plan comes together"
Getting a job right away and basically playing with "house money" when in Vegas.

Being a young member of the workforce, I just learned how crazy severance packages could be (I'd always thought they were 1, maybe 2 paychecks... if the company even offered them). Seeing this doesn't make me want laid-off or anything, but if that day ever comes, I'm going to try to follow this blueprint; it's a beauty.

Congrats, and have a blast! I'm glad you got everything squared-away before your trip as you'll have absolutely zero stress!

I appreciate the props. Bear in mind, I had nine+ years in, and because I was busy with work the last several months I barely used any vacay, and had planned to use some in the fall. So it's plausible to get where I am, but it takes years with the same employer.

True; it does sound like you set yourself up for success. I'm only two years deep, but I'll keep dreaming haha

Things work out the way they're supposed to. I guess you can say you're between jobs while on Vegas vacation.
