I have a trip coming up and I was thinking about making a change in the way I play Blackjack. When the blackjack payout was 3/2, if the dealer showed an Ace and offered even money I would decline. I thought the extra money was worth the risk. But now when all you can find is 6/5 Blackjack I was thinking maybe even money is not such a bad play. Anyone else have any thoughts on it?

I pretty sure in a 6/5 game they do not offer even money.

They won't give it to you.

Even money is a shorthand for insurance. It is based on the payout being 3:2, and is a shortcut of you insuring your win. You would either win the insurance and push, or win bet and lose insurance, so always even money.

But as you guessed, at 6:5 that is not true. They don't give even money. You can insure, but now a dealer BJ means you net 10 and non BJ means you net 7. It remains a bad bet.

I never understand when people say you can "only find" 6/5. 3/2 is all over the strip.

I didnt follow BJ too much and I noticed they went from all 3/2 to recently 6/5. Can anyone explain why they made a jump to this strange payout ? Why not 4/3 or something similar to 3/2 but slightly worse? 6/5 is way too bad , what is the history behind this?

You're right. I was playing on a cruise ship last year, and they only had 6/5 BJ. I was offered even money and turned it down automatically, but when I thought about it later, I realized I should have taken it.

A genius, depending on your point of view, at Harrah's in the mid 2000s. It started out on single deck games and migrated to DD and shoe games as casino execs realized they could get away with it. Pretty much all lower limit games on the strip are now 6/5 regardless if they are DD or shoe games. The simple reason this game has proliferated is because the general BJ playing population that visits Vegas is either uninformed about this rule or are too unmotivated to go downtown or off strip to play better games. There are still very good 3/2 games on the strip at higher limits.

Yes, if offered "even money" at 6:5 (it really shouldn't be), a player should definitely take it.

But generally speaking, as long as OP isn't exclusively a $5 player or isn't flexible on Strip venues, 3:2 BJ can still be found. There won't be many tables, but they're still around. For CET, Bally's/Flamingo typically still has 3:2 for $10+, especially on weekdays.

Thanks everyone for your opinion. I agree that you should not play a 6:5 game. I have resisted them for years and that was one of the bigger reasons I switched to MGM properties. But here is the problem, we are only 10 dollar players and I only play with my wife. So trying to find two chairs together and a 3:2 game and 10 dollars a hand could literally take hours. We even tried a couple of Stations casinos last year because we thought maybe a “locals casino” would still have 3:2. We were wrong there to. So its not like we don’t put in the effort its just I don’t want to work all day just to find a game.

Dallas - next time, try Gold Coast ($5 DD pitch, 3:2, H17, DAS permitted...multiple tables available pretty much 24/7)... the Orleans has the sames games.
Also - most every casino downtown offers 3:2 double-deck at $5 or $10 minimums...plenty of open tables all the time at the Boyd properties (MSS, Cal & Fremont).
If you feel that you must play 6:5 (which I will, frankly, never understand), then compensate for the lost $3 per $10 blackjack by not tipping CWs & dealers during your play at one of these tables.
No - I do not actually advocate stiffing dealers & CWs, but if the property thinks is appropriate, then you're certainly no more "at fault" than they are. You're just transferring the 'short-pay' penalty to the hotel's staff. The penalty itself is STILL the fault of the property.

I am also a $10 (base-bet) player, and I know that I tip about $10 an hour to dealers & CWs. If I get 4 blackjacks per hour, those tips are 120% covered by being paid 3:2 instead of 6:5.

I might even go as far as to suggest that you tell the dealer, "Well, there goes another $3 in tips for you & the cocktail waitress", every time you're dealt a blackjack and you're only paid $12 instead of $15.

Um, wow. Not a fan of that idea.

Hurts the wrong people. If you can't afford the extra $10-15 an hour lost in playing 6:5, don't play blackjack. You can blame who you like, but its not like the staff you are stiffing can change anything

Stiffing CWs & dealers is wrong... no argument ... just as wrong as the casino stiffing blackjack players by only paying 6:5 when they get a blackjack.

I totally disagree. Two completely different things by different agents. NEVER EVER stiff the staff!!! They have ZERO say on the odds at the table. If you don't like 6:5, then just don't play it! But stiffing the staff because you don't like Management is low class.

All these people saying never play 6:5, don't play 6:5 ever...like it is their money. if you want to play blackjack and there is only 6:5 at your level, then just play. Driving across town to make a few extra bucks is stupid, you'll spend more on a taxi to get downtown than you will make playing 3:2 vs 6:5...

You can choose not to play the game they offer.

Can the cocktail waitress or server choose not to serve you?

People playing 6:5 are not being stiffed. They either don't know or care what the math is, or they care about convenience than they do about finding a good game. And even if you want to rationalize that one thing is wrong as another, you are talking about doing the second thing to a third party.

"Why did you stab me? That's not right"
"Because that guy over there robbed me. That wasn't right either. So really HE stabbed you".
