Stayed at an off strip hotel in March 2015 and are returning in March 2017. Only downside is price is THREE times as much as we paid in 2015!!!!
Hotel not been renovated or had any new stuff added so why so expensive?
Noticed strip hotels expensive for 2017 too. With resort fees and taxes I fear Vegas will be shunning ordinary tourists.
    What do members think?

Supply and demand. Look for prices to better reflect the free market as it gets closer to your travel dates.

What dates have you looked at?

You probably don't want to generalise too much. Business is on the upswing and rates are creeping up, but if you are seeing 3x higher there is a good chance there is a busy convention/show/event on during those dates. At CET props for example, the rates for the first week in March are more than 3x higher than the last week.

Did you go during the first weekend of March Madness before? Are you trying to book during the first weekend of March Madness in 2017? That particular weekend is going to be higher starting on Wednesday night through the weekend for any year.

The higher rates will start on March 15th.

#1 It's early. Really early. Most hotels are pushing their fall dates and starting to do early winter.

#2 I've noticed off strip hotels can be more aggressive about special events than even the strip hotels that host them. Presuming your dates coincide with MM, I can think of several off strip hotels that will go after and will win that business.

    # 3 Without knowing the hotels you are looking at, it's hard to give a more concrete answer. Some of your assumptions may be wrong or their could be something specific to that hotel that would cause rates to rise.

People dont need to book hotels this soon unless they are comped and later afraid they went be. Its not bad to look daily as I notice TR prices ALWAYS change but I wouldnt fret it...

Also, if you are looking at Orleans, they host one of the final qualifying tournaments for March Madness (the week before). Gold Coast, by affiliation, will also be more expensive.

OP, it would be helpful if you tell us which hotel has tripled in price.

Regular prices have not gone up that much.

Daily prices can be double, triple or more on one day vs the next. This is normal in Vegas. Just look at monthly calendars to see this. All tied to events, etc.

First weekend of the tourney along with St. Patty's Day is always going to be more expensive than usual. Just like if I wanted to go in Feb, I know going the first weekend will likely cost me an arm and a leg. It's supply and demand.

Prices are often high this far out, possibly because only captive audiences (convention goers etc) would plan this far ahead.

That said, prices are high this year because people have money this year and are going on vacations, and the number of hotel rooms is the same. Demand shifts to the right and prices rise. Prices have been steadily increasing since 2010 when rooms were nearly free.

CONEXPO is March 7-11 so that seems to always shoot hotel prices way up. That show is every 3 years. We usually celebrate our anniversary which is March 10 out there, but not on the years the show is there.

I was also going to mention the CONEXPO. My daughter and husband are booked at the Mirage for over $6000 for them and three other rooms for their employees. It was the best rate for a mid level hotel that they could find months ago.

We have our wedding booked at the Excalibur March 7. When we booked, room were super cheap. I looked now and the rooms for that week are about 200 even with our wedding discount code. THe week before and after is 30 some a night. Really bummed. Might change the date I guess.
Do you think it's possible the rates may drop again if the rooms don't fill as much?

Yep ConExpo - Las Vegas Convention Center 3/07/2017 3/11/2017 129,000 attendees

Avoid dates with large conventions if you have flexibility.

This thing has been kicking around since July. BUT - the OP has not come back with any comments such as which hotel or what dates. I am guessing the OP has not come back here at all. Folks here really try to help, but some people do not want help - LOL!
