"Mexico resort style" hotel with good family activities... .suggestions?

I think I'm starting to push my luck with solo Vegas trips, so I'm hoping to find somewhere I could take the wife and kid that they would enjoy, and that would also facilitate me making it out for a bit of degenerate drinking and gambling.

I'm hoping to find an off strip hotel that's as close as possible to "Mexico resort style" that has a nice pool & good activities for a 7 year old girl, decent food, and is hopefully reasonably close to the strip or downtown (preferred). Some sort of an onsite casino would be nice but not mandatory.

Does anyone have any suggestions of a place that might fit the bill?

EDIT: When I say "Mexico resort style", I was referring to the luxury and amenities of the resorts there, rather than a Mexican theme.

 

"EL Cortez" or "Sante Fe" ???? Strange request. Don't think I've ever seen 1 quite like this . Good luck. Most hotels aren't themed towards a certain country other than the Venetian and Paris!

It does have a few pools, including a water slide that may be fun for a kid. I haven't been to the place, so I don't know how kid friendly it might be otherwise.

 

The suggestion by jimboguy looks great, especially since it's very close to the strip and there's a Gameworks arcade less than a 10 minute drive away, if your daughter is interested in arcade games.

While it's much farther from the strip, I would also suggest something like the Westin Lake Las Vegas, since it has a kiddie pool, a small beach, a kid's club, and a shuttle to the Las Vegas strip. As far as activities go, of course there's also Lake Las Vegas, where there's plenty to do, like kayaking and paddle-boating (1 hour free rental), for starters.

 

Why not take them to Mandalay Bay, not off the strip but would work. Better yet skip Vegas and take them to Atlantis, where you have casinos and a beach! lol

 

There is also Red Rock which is not close to the strip but has a nice pool, a kids quest, bowling, a movie theatre, outdoor shopping mall right next door, good food options, red rock canyon for a hike, nice casino and a nice spa for the wife

 

What about Circus Circus?

 

I guess it depends on how far from the strip you want to go. Orleans come to mind immediately - movie theater, nice family friendly pool, bowling alley, lots of restaurants including food court with nice range of fast food options. Other hotels like it would be Red Rock Resort, Green Valley Ranch, Sun Coast and South Point, which are further from the strip. There are probably a few others but Orleans would be the closest to the strip. Palms has similar amenities but i don't know of any feedback on it as it relates to trips with kids.

This. My kids still consider the Orleans to be their LV home and won't even consider staying on the strip now that they're young adults. Love to party on the strip, but prefer to stay back home at the Orleans. Movie Theater, Bowling, Arcade, great pool for kids, easy shuttle to the strip. Have no idea how old your kids are, once my oldest ones were young teens, daddy and I would buy them tickets to Mac King's show and we'd hit one of the Flamingo bars for an adult beverage while they enjoyed the show. Orleans also has a food court that kids would be crazy about. Have fun!

 

"Mexico resort style" seems antithetical to most of Vegas. I like the Lake Las Vegas idea though you are extremely limited on eats out there and there is zero gambling, though it is a great spot for kids/families. Another of our go-tos comes to mind, and you aren't as isolated: JW Marriott in Summerlin. Great hotel with big standard rooms, locals/bluehair casino if you need to scratch that itch and Suncoast is just a stroll away, fantastic pool, it's in suburban Vegas so all the usual retail, entertainment and restaurant goodies that might prove handy. Golf easily at hand if folks are so inclined. The great outdoors not far removed. Rent some bikes locally as Summerlin is criss-crossed with dedicated and road-striped paths. It's Vegas without being Vegas, and "Mexico resort style" definitely is not Vegas.

 

I would go with Mandalay Bay or MGM/Signature for the pool/waterpark, and dining options..... or Lake Las Veas

 

How about the Grandview? South of the Strip but easily accessible on I-15. Several pools and children's activities....and South Point (w/movie theater and bowling alley) is a two minute walk across the street.

 

Groupon often has a myan resort offered. Good for kids it says. I think it's near the outlets south on Las Vegas Blvd. it's not my style so that's everything I know about it.

 

Red Rock is my suggestion. Lots of shopping now close by also.

 

We go to Vegas every year with our kids. In our experience, the best option is to rent someone's week at one of the timeshare resorts on eBay. No daily service but lots of room with full kitchen, and it's a great place for kids. We stayed at Wyndham Grand Desert last year and it was great. We have also stayed at Diamond Resorts on Decatur Blvd which was smaller but also very nice.
There are some things to keep in mind when renting a timeshare resort:

If you rent a week owned by someone else, the check-in staff will try to get you to go to a sales presentation, but you are under no obligation to do so, and a polite but firm and unequivocal "No, thank you" should take care of it.
Once you book there are no refunds or changes.
You can't always find an offer that works for you. For this reason it is a good idea to have a cancelable plan B at one of the hotels.
It is a very good idea to have a car, since most of the resorts are off the strip and not really next to other resorts.

As for hotels for your Plan B reservation and/or to visit: I recommend the Orleans as the most kid-friendly hotel, Kids' Tyme, activities and pool, but rooms are not as big as some others. Other places that are pretty good for traveling with kids are the Tuscany Suites (big rooms w/kitchenette and easy parking near the room) and South Point. I suggest avoiding the big strip hotels because they don't really have much to offer kids other than the pool and there can be a very long and confusing walk from your car to your room, which can be a challenge for some kids and parents. Also their restaurants tend to be expensive, even the basic coffee shops.

Be sure to take your kids the the Children's Museum. It's the best thing to do in vegas with the kids.

It's a few years out of date but when my kids were younger, I wrote this guide of things to do with kids in vegas on my blog. The experience probably won't be like a Mexican resort - for that you probably want to go to Mexico or take a cruise- but you can definitely have fun with them.

 

And Luxor, Monte Carlo, Bellagio, Caesars etc.
