Years ago if you took a picture in a casino, security would pounce on you and tell you it wasn't allowed. Now on trip reports, I see pics of machines, menus, dealers and everything you can think of. What are the rules on this?

Avoid taking pictures of others you don't know.

I think nearly all places have stopped caring/enforcing. I've even taken my phone out (albeit briefly) at the blackjack table on my past couple trips to answer a text or something and never heard a peep from the dealer or floor.

I was warned not to take any pics of the table areas on my last trip.

Also, at Sams Town, I was told not to shoot any videos in the casino.

Apparently, it is not enforced all the time, if at all.

If a place had a "no photo" policy it would be tough to enforce with the abundance of smartphones nowadays.

Before our first cruise I snapped a few pics of the decorations in the boarding/waiting lobby using my old Nikon--at the time unaware that pics weren't allowed in there for security reasons. A security person came over and ordered me to delete the pics. Of course, all around us people--including my wife--were snapping pics on their Smartphones...

I think that it's the smartphones that has made the difference. I remember the early days of this place, when we were on T2V. I'd bring my 35mm camera and wander around to take photos of things for the board. I would get stopped at least once per casino and told "You can't take pictures in here, maam." I'd plead ignorance, walk off and start taking pictures again. :wink2: I'm a rebel that way.

The phone makes is so much easier to just snap a quick picture and then slip it back in my pocket before anyone sees. I take lots of pictures, but still ask at the table and try to avoid getting too many photos of strangers who didn't agree to get posted on the interwebz.

I was at Sam's Town last week and took lots of pictures and videos. No problem there. Mind you, it's not like the old days of lugging around a huge video camera. I doubt anyone even noticed me with my small camera.

I try to avoid showing other people as much as possible. And I always turn the flash off in the casino too. I lose the odd picture but most turn out okay without the flash.

I have noticed a sign in 4 Queen's saying you are welcome to take pictures. I think it may say something about being courteous to other guests though or something like that.

Vegasworm's TR said that they were asked not to film with the GoPro in Crystals. So, YMMV. It's going to depend a lot on the employees you encounter.

About two years ago, I decided to take a photo of my fiancée at the Plaza, but I didn't pay attention to the fact that she was standing in front of the cashier booth. A very nice security guard asked me not to do that - which, once you think about it, is quite reasonable. I asked him if there was anything else that I shouldn't photograph, and he replied that I shouldn't take pictures of the security station, either. He didn't say anything about not photographing around the table games or slots. No one else has ever given me a hard time about taking photos or using a cell phone in a casino in years; in fact, it was a bartender at El Cortez who first turned me on to the WinPoker app for video poker.

There is - or at least was - a Nevada law prohibiting the use of cell phones in a sportsbook, presumably to cut down on out-of-state straw betting. In the past I have seen casino employees rigorously enforcing this, but that seems to be waning - when I was in the Westgate sportsbook last year, which is the only one I usually frequent these days, about two-thirds of the patrons seemed to be dividing their attention between the sports on the screens and their cell phones. However, that might just have been the Westgate slacking off on enforcement that day.

Lol, exactly! I was shooting a video clip of the mystic falls area & still had the video still rolling as I walked into the casino, a security guard was walking out at the same time & politely told me not to video the casino. I apologized, he was cool about it.

They changed the law a few years ago. You can use your phone in the sports book now but you still can't take bets for out of staters.

At Planet Hollywood they allow you to take photos except while you're at the table. They want you to step back from the table if you're going to take a photo. The one time they allowed it is when someone at a Three-Card-Poker table hit the 6-Card Diamond Royal Flush for a million dollars. I showed it in another thread. Here it is again.

I used to keep a list of which casinos allowed and did not allow it but I quit doing that in recent years. Nowadays if I'm wanting to shoot a lot I'll stop at the security desk or flag down a "suit" and talk to them.

Last couple of times I did this were at the Riviera shortly before it closed (http://omababe.blogspot.com/2015/04/bibi-riv.html) and they said ok but don't shoot the cage or anyone actively playing a table game, and the Rio (part of the page http://omababe.blogspot.com/2014/07/signs-of-sin-city.html) and they said "no tables, no cage, no flash" or something like that.

The only place that I recall seeing a "No Photos" sign was Bally's, but that's some time ago. The only place I was ever confronted was Westward Ho right before it closed. The security guy was very nice, even apologetic, and he asked me nicely not to shoot inside the casino.

Historically, the only places I remember where it was virtually unrestricted were Circus and the old Silver City. Most had restrictions on tables and cage.

Picture taking rules are general and some enforce and others don't.

I tried to take a photo of the Mohegan Sun casino table game area - just to show the feel of the space, not focusing on players at all, and the floor was quite rude about telling me not to photograph. Between the rudeness, not allowing backpacks, not allowing patrons to plug in to outlets to charge devices, and the general pain in the a$$ it is to get to, I've written the place off. I probably wouldn't have if the floor wasn't such a jerk. Seems like they are shooting themselves in the foot with these extreme "no photo" policies.

Agree - I for one would not appreciate my picture - inadvertent or intentional - showing up on a message board or any other place for that matter without my permission.
