I had gotten an e-mail offer from a Strip hotel that advertised $35/night. I wanted a friend to come along with us to Vegas since he loves poker and doesn't get out there that often. So I told him that I could get a room for him for around $170 (I added around $8 for taxes to be safe) for four nights. He was excited so I told him that I would book it in a couple of hours when I got home. I had forgotten about the resort fee which increased the rate by almost $160.

Even though he could afford it, I know that he would not want to pay over $300 and probably would not have gone if he knew that it was double what I had stated. Should I just pay the extra $160? I would hate to have gotten him excited about going only to tell him I forgot to tell him about the added fee. I always get rooms comped so it didn't come to my mind at the time. Besides it's only about 5% of my gambling budget, and it would make the trip just that much more enjoyable if he's there. And I wouldn't feel guilty.

Can you afford the 160? Does it have to be on the strip? If the trip would be more enjoyable that he is there this is what I would do - tell him about the mistake and mention that if it is a financial burden for him that you will pay the money because you know the two of you will have a great time.
Take it from there. Remember if you pay - it is a gift, do not expect anything in return! Have a great time.

If you can afford the $160 I would tell him about the mistake but I would also tell him you will pay the $160. Let him say "no, you don't need to do that." If you ask him if it is a financial burden for him it may well be but he may not want to tell you so. The extra $160 will be a gift and he'll have a great time. And if he wins, or even if he doesn't, he might want to treat you to a meal or something to show his appreciation. But, even if that doesn't happen, it sounds like you two would have a great time.

Bottom line is I would cover the $160 as a gift, in large part because you said the trip would be that much more enjoyable if he is there. Given that you get comped rooms, my guess is you could probably blow $160 pretty quickly gaming (as I would), so $160 is a small price to pay to have him with you and have neither of you feel stressed about the added $160.

Call your host. Book two rooms. Get your room comped and get a discounted casino rate for your friend's room. Both rooms will be booked under your name. When you check out, you will pay the bill (if there is one). Tell your friend that the cost for his room was (fill in the blank) and let him reimburse you for any amount that you see fit to allow him to pay. If the room costs more than you ask him to pay, you can pay the difference and he doesn't even need to know that you did so.

What ExVegasLocal said works too. Based on your and his/her play you might wind up getting his full room comped off anyway on the back end.

Definitely call your host and book the extra room and don't allow him to pay more than you quoted him, your host will hook you up.

If you can afford it I would pay it for him. I did this with a friend of mine that I took to Vegas last month. I had told her the room costs but then I decided I wanted to upgrade the room. I didn't even consider asking her to chip in more since I know the room is already expensive when you add in the resort fees so I paid the upgrade fee myself.

Thanx for all your advice! The added $160 is an annoyance, but not a financial burden to me. It really isn't to him either, but he is rather frugal on things he spends for himself, not what he spends for others. The location of the other room is at a different property than where my host is. I think I got a special offer to lure me to their location. It actually isn't as good of a deal than I thought if the cost is double what I originally thought. After reading all your inputs, I cancelled the reservation I got for him, got the friends rate at the casino I play at, and paid the additional amount of what I quoted my friend. It comes out to about the same as the other location, but at least he is at the same property now, and I'll enjoy the company we have of everyone there. I know we're all going to have a lot of fun!

I want to say 'friends are cheap, let him suck it up, or not come at all, and with the $160 you can make tons of new casino friends'. But I'm not gonna say that, because I'm not a french word for mouth, change the b for a d.

Yeah, I would tell him the truth, and that you will pony up the $160 and see what happens. There better be a trip report!!!! Good luck! :)

Just pay the difference! The two things I spend money on without thought...family and friends. What better way to spend your money than to bring joy to the ones you love. I know it sounds mushy, but that's my feeling on it.

Please give me a contact listing of your friends.

Mine fly in and fly out without accounting for the $800-$1000 they owe me.

    You're a good egg, Noonan.

Great tip Flowers. Being gracious and covering it since the added cost came after you got him to commit, but also let him know, so that he has the option of offering to covering it.

Personally, if someone was getting me a good rate, and I found out later they coughed up my resort fee, I'd be REALLY upset/feel really bad. But then I am almost OCD on never wanting to be moochy.

And yes, you are DEFINITELY a "good egg," and a good friend. Have a blast!

As soon as you get to Vegas , before you check in , put $160 on black and see what happens at the roulette wheel. Problem solved :)...... I mean its Vegas and sometimes you have to say WTF and take a chance
