I dug out my old Iron Butterfly album and fired up the turntable. I haven't heard the full version in years, all 17:01 minutes of it. One of the first heavy metal songs i heard as a kid, along with Steppenwolf's Born to be Wild. I think the term acid rock was used back then. Geez, I feel old.

 

that was a fave of radio dj's...could go take a dump, grab some food, and still have time to get back on the air.

Yeah, graduated high school in 74. The future seemed so far away.

 

I saw Iron Butterfly perform at the Arena Theater in Houston in 1969.

Yes, I graduated in the same era, 1975 - must have just been something that good about our music that we still love it. I have the same albums & turntable but you all got my memory going about actually dancing to In-A-Gadda-Da-Vida at the sock hop in the gym for all 17 minutes! How in the world did we dance to that drum solo?

But I have my Pandora channel at work titled the same that also includes Steppenwolf, Jefferson Airplane, Alice Cooper, Meatloaf, The Who, Three Dog Night, Beatles, Black Oak Arkansas, GFR (my first concert in 1971), Zeppelin,
Bowie, Rainbow and so many others. Sure helps my day go by

 

Class of 1973. No headphones, so I just put the speakers close to each other and stuck my head in between them. Husband talking here. Wife doesn't know what I'm talking about.

 

Best Drum solo ever!

 

The '88 Orioles! There was a radio station in Baltimore that played it literally non-stop around the clock until the Birds managed to win a game, which didn't' happen until they were 0-21.

 

Class of 78 here but my older brother had the 17 minute studio version and the 19 minute live version. Listened to both many times.

 

What's the expression? Heard it in some Broadway play. "I am older now than I ever thought I would be."

 

Wow. This thread brings back memories. '74 HS grad here. I remember this song playing full blast in our gym while us guys were on one side of the bldg. trying to look cool and the girls on the other side pointing and laughing at us.

Good times.

 

That was about the time I "graduated" from WABC to WNEW-FM.

 

I graduated around the same time (mid 70's). Actually one of our strip clubs plays that song when it isn't busy. The girls don't really dance on the stage unless a customer comes by so they just play long songs and will change the song if a customer wants to see a girl on stage. Actually I like it because I like the "oldies" songs. Hate the new rap type of songs you see at many clubs, lots of times I feel like bringing ear plugs so I don't have to hear those songs.

I do remember Ginger Baker's solos !
Played my drums right along with him on the tiny hi-fi unit.
I learned to played bruising solos "softly" --- or else I couldn't hear.
Something today's drummers lack....."touch" ..... = just turn up the ear buds +
played as LOUD as you can !.......forget "stroke rolls" !....just beat crap outta it !
But........I am NOT a fan of 70's rock thoug I lived thru it !.....worst period for R'n'R imho !
Maybe, it was all the drugs going on in recording studios ?

Actually, Iron Butterfly hit it big in the late 60s. But, unfortunately, that is when the drugs started taking their toll. Look at Jimi Hendrix and Janis Joplin (drugs and Southern Comfort). I like a lot of the R&R music from the late 60s through the early 80s, but lost interest when the "headbanger" stuff came on the scene.

I also like stuff from the early 60s like the Beach Boys and the Rightoues Brothers.

 

My first concert in '72 was Black Oak Arkansas opening for Black Sabbath in Asbury Park NJ..I remember in their album was a deed or something to an inch of land..wonder whatever happened to that.
First time I even smelled marijuana..and yes smoked it..
