Mirage pulled their Silver Strike machines

According to a message on the Silver Striker board:

On 5/12/2016:

"The Mirage will still be pulling the strike machines tomorrow morning.. They have just found out that they cannot sell the tokens per gaming regulation. "

"Unfortunately the popularity of the tokens has fallen so much that it has become labor intensive for us.."

So, one less reason for me to stay at the Mirage.

I can't seem to go by one of these without throwing a 20 in them. Half the time I end up forgetting to cash in the strike i won before I leave. They must have a higher than average hold for that reason alone.

Say it isn't so...
Those two machines were my addiction to the Mirage, along with the Carnegie Deli. This seems very strange. They were themed with Terry Fator who has had a show at the Mirage for years.
Its always suspect when specific games are removed. I've had this happen in Tunica three times on specific machines where I've won big on multiple occasions.
I guess we'll never truly know why these things take place.

I didn't know there were any of these still around. I quit playing for them when they stopped being .999 Silver. I have a couple dozen including a 9-11 tribute one from the airport, one from Barbary Coast, Aladdin, Imperial Palace and several 2000 millennium special editions. My biggest regret was not walking down to the Stardust to get one as it was closed down and demolished before I got back.

 

Not going to reiterate the history of Silver Strikes here. Any of my TR posts from January or July talk about Silver Strikes. There are now only 5 casinos in Nevada that still have them:

QQQQ - 8
Venetian - 1
Palazzo - 1
Sam's Town - 1
El Cortez - 1

Johnny Nolon's in Colorado has 1 machine

Word was that the Sunshine Mint had a new Silver Strike machine that they were gong to install as prototypes in 5 California casinos.

 

I played it on my March trip and did pretty good scoring three strikes on a twenty dollar bill. The hardest part was getting on the machine since they were right by a table game and the seats were occupied by non players watching their other half at the table game.

That's when charm and a tactful nature become important. It's hard to just tell those folks to get up and move. They usually are clueless that anyone would have a desire to play that particular game that they are hogging. I usually say something like.."this machine is calling my name...would you mind if I play on it?" It isn't rude to express your interests there.

If they were non players, it shouldn't have been a problem. I would have just asked them to move since I would like to play the machine.

 

I specific went there to play the SS machine, but they only had Terry Fator coins and I really didn't care to acquire one of those.
I don't think enough people are aware of the SS machines.
If each hotel had their own custom one I bet many of us would be going from casino to casino to collect them.

 

As they did before 2009. Before 2009, almost all casinos throughout North America had silver strike machines.

In 2009, IGT decided that they weren't going to support the machines anymore and the casinos were told that when the leases were up on the Silver Strike machines, they could either buy the outright, or turn them in.

Most casinos decided to turn them in. The Four Queens (downtown Las Vegas) decided to keep them and cater to the Silver Strike crowd. The Four Queens has 8 silver strike machines, the most of any casino that has them left.

The ones at Venetian/Palazzo are themed as well. They have the blue caps where the Mirage doesn't. I can't remember if V/P has red caps. I ended up bringing one home from Venetian in March by accident. Oh well, it'll still be worth 20.00 next trip unless I just want a souvenir with Sheldon's picture on it!

Like pirviii, I stopped playing those machines when they stopped being .999 silver. But before they switched, we amassed quite a nice little collection, including a couple of the 1 pounders.

 

V/P has red and blue caps. . The "problem" with the V/P strikes is that they all have Sheldon Adelson on them . . .

 

But that's the overall problem with the strikes. V/P has Adelson on them. Mirage had Fator on them so after winning one or two or a few you don't have any urge to play anymore. At least the 4q has a "set" of strikes so you have to keep playing to collect a set of 4 but after that.....same thing. Once and a while the 4q has a set of different strikes to stir it up but once they are gone it is back to the regular set.

 

The "real" purpose of the current clad strikes is to gather 30 for the $300.

The clad strikes only have "collectible" value since they are silver plated "pot metal".

All they're really worth it $10 at the cage if you're not collecting 30.

 

The Mirage ones had various characters on them from Fators show. I spent $40 in April & had 5 strikes, 3 of which were duplicates. A bit heavy in purse. Only reason I played mLife at all this last trip. (Other fav machines I had were gone on trip before).
