During my next LV trip I'm thinking of taking an extended side trip on U.S. route 50 a.k.a. 'The Loneliest Road in America.' Always wanted to drive down 'TLRIA'. Starting out in LV I would stop for the night in Ely which has several small hotels/motels to choose from. The Hotel Nevada & Gambling Hall looks like the most appealing. Based on what I've seen on https://www.hotelnevada.com/ it looks like a kinda neat place. So just wondering if anyone has ever stopped here or anywhere else in Ely.

In addition I would stop at Stateline NV from Ely and spend a couple of days at Lake Tahoe (never been there) and then head back to Vegas from there.

I have stayed in Ely several times and at a few different properties. I have not stayed at the Hotel Nevada, but from walking by, it looks a bit "rustic". ;) If I were looking for a casino hotel in Ely, I'd go with The Prospector. The La Quinta is probably the nicest non-casino hotel in town.

I think it's beautiful out there and love driving through on my way from seeing Mom & Dad near Boise, through to Vegas. Lots of see out there, although it doesn't seem like it at first glance. :)

I've stayed at the Prospector many times and would not recommend making a trip from Vegas to Ely as there isn't much there. We are always happy to be out of Ely when we have to travel through there.

We've stayed there several times and it's an interesting place. TINY old rooms, very clean but OLD ,some of which have themes based on old movie stars and a lobby filled with old memorabilia. A lot of oldtime movie stars stayed there. Although there are newer places to stay in Ely we would always choose the Hotel Nevada. The coffee shop there is pretty good too. There's a small casino to satisfy your gambling urge. There is a train in town that has scheduled rides. We were there on Halloween one year and they had a haunted ride-hokey but fun. If you're in the area I would suggest that you visit Great Basin NP, about an hour east of Ely. It's been several years since we've been there but I doubt that much has changed. The drive to Reno/Tahoe is indeed a lonely road but the Rainbow at the end (Tahoe) is well worth visiting. It's my favorite place to visit.

I also like to do road trips around Vegas, and last year, I passed through Ely, while driving down from Oregon. I stayed at La Quinta Inn. I got a 2-br suite at the same price for a regular room via Priceline and it was an excellent room. The hotel was super clean and looked like brand new. Only problem was that wifi sucked (very slow and spotty). If they resolved the wifi issue, or if you don't need it, then I highly recommend La Quinta Inn.

I agree that the LaQuinta is probably the nicest hotel in Ely. I've stolen the wifi a couple times from Prospector, so I kind of feel like I owe it to them to stay there next time.

I really like the area. Great Basin is beautiful. I did a big road trip many years ago (1990's) where we visited Yellowstone, the first national park, and Great Basin, the newest. As the ranger was talking, before we started our tour of Lehman Caves, he said, "Until recently, Great Basin was the newest national park." WHAT!!?! Trip ruined. ;) Turned out there was something in American Samoa that had recently been declared a NP.

Between Vegas and Ely, I like to take the more eastern route, 93, vs 318 as there's a lot more to see along the route. I can't get over the amount of wildlife there is to see around Lake Pahranagat NWR. And I think Cathedral Gorge is worth a stop to get out and stretch your legs. There's a pretty good place to get beef jerky out there too. Maybe outside Caliente? It's by one of the forks in the road on the southern end of the route.

One of these days I want to take the bypass road through Elgin. I usually travel alone through there and I keep chickening out because it looks a pretty desolate and the kind of place your car would break down at the start of a horror movie.

I stayed there once and it was very old school … so old school that it was wonderful. I would stay there again in a heartbeat.

Exactly! I've stayed there many times and had fun every visit, but you do have to dial back your expectations a bit when you hang in Ely!
