Monday, the fabled Riviera sign was taken down and moved to a new neon sign museum in Reno. I know the Riv was just plain worn out, but it's so sad to see it go. I wish they could have kept the sign; it was so beautiful as well as iconic. Maybe open a restaurant called "Riviera" and put that at the entrance, something like that. Implosions will be carried out in July and August.

    Anyway.... sigh.... it's over.

I was there last April before they closed and it was sad. I usually went there once or twice per trip and always had fun. Out with the old and in with the new. Sad.

Taken March 24, 2016 on the last day of my trip. I had a feeling it would be the last time I'd see the Riv like this.

I was fortunate to experience the North Strip in all it's glory, including the Riviera. In fact, IMO, the best time i had in Vegas was in the mid to late 90's. You had Riviera, Sahara, Stardust, Desert Inn, and Sands, as well as Silver Slipper, Frontier, Landmark, Las Vegas Hilton.........then you had the new properties starting with Mirage/Excalibur and MGM with Bellagio rounding out the 90's. So at that time you could casino hop from the Hacienda up to Sahara. The South Strip up to North Strip.
But, times have changed for the immediate future. There's no longer places to see and do on the North Strip, it's basically further South, from Encore/Wynn to Mandalay Bay.
Hopefully some day that will change, with the North being relevant again to the general public.
But, as many people in here have said, they wish they got to experience the famous hotel/casinos of the past.

I did, and had fond memories of the Riviera and Stardust and others long gone that i will cherish forever. These places were not just concrete and steel, the foundations were the people who worked there to make everyone feel at home away from home, it was more personable..........something which has been lost to a great extent nowadays.

Maybe the place in Reno paid more? I don't even know, do museums buy things or are they donated?

The guy in Reno is a private collector who wants to start a museum. You can assume he paid for it. Neon Museum got a different Riviera sign.

What exactly.........is "The Riviera" sign ?
The letters at the top ?......or bottom ?
    The letters + stars,together ?
I couldn't fit that in my living room.......that's why I passed on bidding for it.

One of the smaller signs made its way to Atlantic City last summer, I saw this at the Beer Garden at the end of the pier in front of Caesars.

The Neon Museum (Vegas) needs a lot more space. They have signs behind signs behind signs. I wish one of the casino companies would pony up so they could do it right.
