If you wear sandals and take them off when you go through security, are you ever afraid of catching something? Being barefoot and walking through gives me the creeps. I usually wear tennis shoes with socks just through security and then off go the socks and shoes and on go the flip flops. I don't touch the shoes again until my return trip. I only take a carry on and those shoes take up a lot of room. Any other suggestions?

After I walk through barefooted I make sure not to lick my feet. No problems yet with that strategy. ;)

I never go barefoot except in the pool or sitting by the pool. But if I had to go barefoot through security, I wouldn't worry about it.

Sorry, but people sitting next to me on the plane in flip flops (or most anywhere for that matter) creep me out and make worry about catching something from THEM.... Just saying

What do you think you could "catch" walking on some carpet and a little plastic pad in your bare feet that would be worse than walking the grass at home, on your own carpet at home, in the sand at the beach...

All that aside, because of the heat and sweat aspect of your feet and that its unlikely you are scrubbing your sandals clean regularly, there will most likely be hundreds or thousands of times more germs on the inside of your sandals (that you are in constant contact with while wearing) than there are on that carpet and plastic pad...

I had no idea that that would cause someone to worry.

Sandals off in an airport, walking barefoot through security - I've never really worried about it. I think there are more germs picked up by your hands than anything your feet would pick up.

The bedspread on a hotel bed worries me more :(

Just wondering, but how do you decontaminate the shoes when you get home? I'm curious because I realize people have different ideas about germs.

Wouldn't wearing flip flops through the rest of the airport invite more germs than wearing socks and tennis shoes after walking barefoot through 20 feet of security?

I do carry on luggage as well. I wear sandals as much as possible to speed up the process through security. I've never worried about catching something during the minute or two I'm barefoot. If you're healthy, skin is pretty resilient.

I'm a lot more worried about the real quality of our screening processes than what may get on my feet if I end up barefoot for a whole minute.

This thread cracks me up, people worried about catching something from people wearing flip flops on a plane. I mean if your germophobic i would be more worried about the bacterias that exist on the bottom of the shoes. This is especially funny since in most americans homes its fully accepted to be wearing shoes inside your house.

No, I don't worry about being barefoot at the airport. It would be a hassle to wear shoes that I can wear socks with to the airport if I don't need them the rest of the trip. That also mean the appropriate outfit for those shoes and socks would also be something I would have to change out of right away. I don't know what the big deal is about being barefoot would be in an area where most other people would be in socks.

To avoid this particular phobia, I would wear white socks with Birkenstocks.

Well....I do walk up on the balls of my feet -
    when passing thru security.
I try the least amount of floor contact - to foot.
    *
I just read an article - by a physician -that stated
"wearing sandels ( or footwear _) in a shower stall will not
prevent you from catching some foot disease.
    ........sleep on that.......
